Round 15: Canberra Demons v Sydney Swans Reserves @ Manuka Oval

    NEAFL 2016 Round 15

Canberra Demons v Sydney Swans Reserves

    Saturday 9th July 2016
    12.00pm
    Manuka Oval

Just under 2 months ago the Reserves traveled to Canberra and defeated the Demons by 132 points, their greatest margin of victory in 2016. The Demons were without a win at that stage of that season but have improved with 2 wins on the board including an impressive away victory over Redland last week as well as creditable performances against the Giants and the Suns reserves teams.

The Swans meanwhile had a tough first half against defending premiers the NT Thunder, going into the main break in arrears, but sparked by an impressive third quarter showing by Tom Papley and Aliir Aliir, ran over the top of the Thunder to cruise to a big 11 goal victory.

With a strong contingent of 16 listed AFL players named for this game, the Swans will be favourite to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Nankervis will take Naismith's spot as the number 1 ruckman, and Galloway will get valuable minutes as his backup. Davis and Laidler will replace Ted and Aliir in the back line. McGlynn replaces Papley but will spend time in the midfield as well as up forward. Melican's return from injury will necessitate a move for one of the defenders further up the ground, probably Murray or Leonardis

Young Jordan Harper is the standout player in this team, currently joint leader with Southport's ex-Suns midfielder Andrew Boston in the NEAFL MVP vote count. Despite the Demons being his 3rd team in 3 years (with Belconnen and Ainslie both bowing out of the NEAFL in consecutive years), and playing in a losing team week after week, Harper has put together an impressive season thus far. Playing more as a wingman with Ainslie, his move into an inside role has worked wonders for him averaging 31.8 disposals, 7.1 tackles, 4.9 marks, 4.2 clearances and just under a goal a game. He will surely come under the watchful eye of our tagger Jordan Foote.

Isaac Taylor is the Demons' other prolific ball winner. Taylor played for Belconnen in the local Canberra comp last year and won the B&F in that competition. However they will be missing the services of former Adelaide Crow midfielder Sam Martyn and boom youngster Tom Faul who is a Giants Academy member.

Former Crow Ben Dowdell is one of the better rucks in the NEAFL and will provide good opposition for Nankervis.

I know you're the expert on the reserves Ugg. The depth of your knowledge is mind boggling. So I thought I'd check out a rumour with you.

Is it true that Tom Derickx faked the ankle injury last week and was only practicing the Sinclair-Stretcher manoeuvre. But when the bench failed to react he took himself off the ground and now refuses to play. I noticed that he wasn't on the injury list which raises my suspicion that this rumour is indeed true.

Haha, is there even a stretcher available at NEAFL games?

He came off during the second quarter, had a lot of work done on his ankle. Started the third quarter at FF.

If you look at 17:06 of the second half replay, he goes up for a mark, lands awkwardly, can't really put much weight on his left foot. Play continues and then eventually he attempts a diving smother (in vain) on Raph Clarke. Gets up, still looks ginger. Swans win the ball, Cunningham pumps it long forward, he's the only Swan there, can barely get to the contest.

Fast forward to 18:25, attempts to run to man the mark, pulls up short.

Fast forward to 19:35, Jack goes long to Derickx, can't mark it despite doing good wrestling work, pulls up sore again.

Next time the Swans go forward 22:35 he's off the ground already. So possibly he kept exacerbating those injuries by not going off after the first time he pulled up sore.

I didn't realise we were playing down here in Canberra tomorrow as the little draw thing the club sends out has the ground listed wrongly on it!

I will be joining R1 out there to have a watch of the ressies tomorrow - proudly wearing my Swannies colours after the sensational performance tonight!!!

What ground did they list it as?

They sort of have it right, sort of wrong - more just confusing. The first game in Rd 7 was listed at 'MO' - Manuka Oval, which is what is used in the legend at the bottom. However, tomorrows game is listed at 'SO' which I assume is meant to be Startrack Oval (same place) - but that isn't defined in the list of grounds. When I first looked at the ressies list it didn't click to me - only when I saw your thread on here did it make sense!

Ill try to make a few running updates on the phone throughout the game, but they won't be a smidgen on your brilliant work Ugg!

8 minutes in swans 3.1.19 demons 1.0.6. Great lead up and mark by dawson in first 15 seconds and kicked truly from the 50. Newman with a good running goal from the pocket and murray with a lovely running goal from just inside the 50. Nankervis and Benny Mcglynn strong early.
