Thread: 2017 trading, drafting, list management

  1. #2437
There is a young South Australian that I have had my eye on for a year or two, Harrison Wigg. He has been consistently racking up large possessions in the Sanfl and just can't crack a start in the Crows midfield. A 3rd or 4th round would probably get the trade done. I would like to see us give him a go.

"Selected at pick 35 at the 2014 national draft, Wigg possesses an elite left-foot kick.

Recruited as a half-back flanker, he played much of the 2017 season as an inside midfielder and for the second consecutive season finished third in the clubs SANFL club champion award behind just-retired star Scott Thompson...

Wigg, 180cm and 78kg, was the only Crow named in the SANFL Team of the Year. A regular emergency for Adelaides AFL team, he missed three SANFL matches but still led the club in disposals with 380 at an average of 25 while ranking third for inside 50s (76) in the league and second at the club for contested possessions (143) and clearances (72), illustrating his talent."

Too many chances and too many injuries. Looks like we might be stuck with him again. Nothing personal against him but I reckon 99 per cent of us would breathe a sigh of relief if we could trade him out.

I'm not sure it's an urgent need but of that group, I think Keeffe is the least appealing.
If a bloke who has been around as long as Keeffe can't crack into the Pies side this year then he would definitely be a dead weight on our list. Much rather one of the other delisted KPB IF we need one which I don't think we do.

Quick running defender is what we do need to release Mills more permanently to the wing.

    Mills is slow

Totally agree. We sit on our hands happy with our list (which I admit is still good) while our immediate rivals take risks and make big moves to improve...

I remember him in his draft year and was one that I wanted us to pick up due to his supposed elite kicking skills (and our complete lack of them). Sounds like he has improved his game at the lower level and in a very good state comp. Good call Flying South!

Like GWS, who've lost Smith and look like losing Kennedy, while Johnson has retired. Sure, he was past it but he still played most of their games last year.

Or Adelaide, who've lost Lever and probably Cameron, and haven't brought anyone in.

Or Geelong, who've lost Motlop, may lose Lang and Menzel, and have lost Lonergan and Mackie to retirement, while their only 'in' looks like being a bloke whose barely played in two seasons and is 33. He may be brilliant for them, or he may spend more time in rehab than out on the field.

Or Richmond, who've been as quiet as we have thus far.

Only Port and Essendon have really splashed out with any results so far. It's hard to know what impact Port's acquisitions will have because I couldn't really make them out in 2017. The gap between their best (beating up on weaker teams) and their worst (rarely being competitive against the better sides - I'm going to ignore their victory against us in r1 given we weren't a "better team" at that point in the season). I think they'll improve, especially with the addition of Rockliff, but they've lost Trengove and Impey who were both pretty decent players.

Essendon have only managed to get one of their mooted trades done thus far. I think they'll complete the Saad trade but it's hard to see how they'll jag Stringer. Even if they do, they've not really addressed their putrid onball division and have lost Watson to retirement.

The reality is, very few teams have done much so far this trade period, and while a few surprises may fall out towards the end of the season, I suspect most clubs will land up not being that active. There aren't really many prized targets on the market. All those garnering the headlines have question marks over them. I think Saad is the most attractive of all players moving, and I'd loved it if we'd been in the market. But we never were, given his move is driven by a desire to be closer to his family in Melbourne. And he's probably going to a club that is already reasonably well served in the position he plays yet has glaring weaknesses elsewhere.

To be fair, we have taken risks with the coaching group and don't have much wriggle room with the playing group. I think we'd do more if we could find a suitor for Tippett, which is understandably difficult.

Trade week isn't over Liz. Geelong will do more moves, that's a given. GWS have a plethora of high draft picks on their list and will gain more this trade period. And Richmond just won a premiership. We did not...

Something smells fishy about Geelong being given pick 19 as compensation for Motlop. Will probably be used to help with the Ablett trade.

Scott Lucas said on SEN this morning that 19 for Motlop says his deal is $600,00 plus. The more they are paid the higher they are rated. I would have thought he was a late second rounder given his reputation.

I also remember liking Wigg in the draft. I haven't followed his career since, but I wouldn't mind adding him to our list. He's probably better than we could get with our 3rd round pick. It depends on what we will do with that pick given the fate of Murray and Robinson is still in limbo.

We don't have any spots open in our best 22, so who should we go chasing? It doesn't improve our list to add a mid-career player who slots in around our 35th best player.

If AJ gets back to his 2012 form, and it is a big if, you would think he's a walk up starter, but even for him, there is not a clear spot waiting for him in the side.

I think we improve our side by giving players already on our list chances in the senior side if their NEAFL form warrants a shot at AFL level.

I see that KPD Sam Collins has been delisted by Freo. I would consider drafting him as a rookie if he's still available. He's a better prospect than Keefe.

I agree. I believe Motlop would have to be on more than 600k pa to get an end of 1st round pick. I think the benchmark is top 5% of player salaries. Maybe a deal has been made to give Geelong that pick if they send it on to GC in the Ablett trade.

I fully expect that both Murray and Robinson will be out of the side by Thursday. It will be interesting to see what we end up with in exchange and how many live picks we go with in the ND. After the XR debacle, surely a Robbo's manager wouldn't be so stupid to ask for a trade without having a club ready to offer him a contract.
