The match day squad can have a maximum of 24 compared to the previous 2 games which had 26, hence only 1 in for this extended 27 man squad which will have 3 cut on match day.

Aliir earmarked to return in the NEAFL practice game against GWS tomorrow.

    K. Jack has me stumped. No game in 5 weeks by the time rd 1 arrives.

All 4 rucks - Naismith, Tippett, Sinclair and Cameron

4 'large' defenders - Grundy, Marsh, Laidler, Melican

    Both of Florent and Haywood.

no wonder we are all guessing R1 team!

We'll have a clearer idea if some of those named take the field tomorrow for the NEAFL practice game.

I wonder why Aliir is playing the NEAFL game tomorrow? Surely a practice game is a practice game, maybe he'll need a couple of games in the NEAFL to get beck to AFL standard?

I think that's probably right. Given he's not very experienced at senior level, I think it's fair (to him, as well as the team) to make sure he is match fit before he gets picked for the senior team. I imagine Melican's highly impressive game last week has swayed the coaches. He's firming as the most likely round 1 debutant, though with the ongoing absence of Jack, I expect one (or even both) of Hayward and Florent could join him in that round 1 side.

I hope Newman gets a run on Sunday. I know he's inexperienced at senior level, but either he or COR potentially offers something the team severely lacks, and it seems that Newman has his nose in front at the moment.

NEAFL practice game is probably open slather regarding how many you have in the team, rotations etc? Aliir probably needs a certain amount of game time that can't be easily accommodated in the 24 player/rotation limited senior game? Melican must be a chance of RI debut regardless of Aliir's availability, last three games been very impressive.

Newman & COR had outstanding NEAFL years in 2016 and will probably need to step up early in the season given our injury list woes. Agree Liz, Newman with a solid background must be in front but gee he needs to rise to senior level this week if he is in R1 consideration.

Anyone going to the NEAFL practice match?

That is a pretty good looking Saints team. They and Melbourne look to me as real finals contenders.

Saints to replace North in the 8 is my feel at this early stage.

Looking at their team - should be a good test for our backline.
