Players have to think about the money being offered as they only have a short time in the game to hopefully set them up for life. Crows offer for McGovern is supposedly $370k for two years whereas Freo's supposed offer is $750k for 5 years, that is a massive gulf. Fans of course only see club loyalty as the key factor as they are emotionally tied to the club. But there are balancing factors against more moderate bigger $ offers that worked for Brisbane, Geelong & Hawthorn's golden eras and it's working for us now.

Sam's post signing presser told of several reasons why he resisted offers from Melbourne and really only looked to re-sign with us.

We are in a very good position when it comes to retaining players and attracting players. We are a club with strong values and culture, we have off field personnel as good as any club, we are a perennial genuine contender, we have a strong fan base but at the same time we don't have a fishbowl they have to live in, the weather is so much better than Melbourne or Adelaide through winter. The weather factor always comes to mind when you see Vic clubs at training rugged up or freezing doing their sea walks. What player would want to play for a team in Tassie??

So for all the doom expressed about Jones and Reid, they both probably took less money to stay here for all of the reasons above, long may these factors continue for us!

Back OT, I am happy to keep Sam. Not a footballer that would be easily replaced, unless we can somehow transplant his hands onto Buddy's arms???

Ron Joseph (longtime North Melbourne administrator) was on Open Mike last night talking about the pre salary cap days, and
players receiving "signing bonuses" of cash in brown paper bags etc. Since 2001, four teams have won a combined 75% (12 out of
    16) of the premierships in that time. There is a lot of talk about equalisation and a level playing field but the spread of premiership
teams is only slightly wider than it was in say the same period before the salary cap came in (1987) and that is with six additional teams
    since then.

    True dat.
We (and he) would get into a lot of trouble.
Kinda like Tipoff being paid in sausage rolls.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Player endorsements dont come under the salary cap, do they? If it did, then players wouldn't be on TV spruiking everything from 'sports' drinks to Lite n Easy. All a player has to do is open another venture (ie a podcast or something) and fans pay a subscripion and there you have it.

Having said that, I worked in Aid and Development for a decade, so when I think of fans giving extra to highly-paid players then it personally turns my stomach.

In order to compensate for Sam accepting a minimum wage contract to stay in Sydney, Sam's future wife will become gainfully employed to supplement the family income.

I am pleased to announce that she will be authoring a new column in Ludwig's Footy Journal called Ask Kimmy, where she will be dealing with important matters facing wags, like:

    1. Is plastic surgery more likely to attract an AFL or NRL player?
    2. How to raise 2 ugly dogs.
    3. Projectile dysfunction: How to improve your kicking action.

I think they do... the AFL have to know about it.
That's why Tipoff and Adelaide got into trouble.

If you look at this article, we've been naughty too... a few times.
It's Wiki, so it's got to be true.

How would you feel if your CEO sent an email around asking all employees to chip in an extra $500 each to his salary otherwise he's moving to a competitor.?

Personally I am not interested in how much he is paid as it is none of my business.

I'm sure the Swans have assessed his value and have compensated him fairly, within the structure of the salary cap.

Before anyone starts a but... how are we going to keep or recruit . The club will have strategies in place, after all that's their job and what they're paid to do

I've had a couple of CEO's who I would gladly pay $500 to cover moving expenses.

A person in my employ used to be a senior exec at Visy in the 90's. Most of the Carlton team were working as "Sales Execs" earning $150k plus in todays money and most of the time they'd only work a handful of hours each week.

Yes Barry, we all hate over paid CEO's, especially those who run banks ( yes Ian Narev, I'm looking directly at you, you scum) and of course no one would feel good about it or actually do it but I have to say, you take some people's 'joke' suggestions far too seriously......move on.
