Can't understand why shiel would leave a club in the premiership window for a struggler. Must be big money.
The difference in dollars between a talent rich GWS and a lack of stars Saints could be $250k+/yr over 5 years. That's not insignificant money when you have to set up the rest of your life. Would also be going home.
Shiel knows a better placed Vic club won't offer as much money as Saints and couldn't get a trade done with GWS anyway.
From GWS viewpoint, they won't be able to match the RFA offers next year so would get a compo pick mid/high teens. Better to get pick 5 in a super draft and not have Shiel next year, their midfield is deep so won't be a huge loss when the "compo" is pick 5. Wonder if Saints will also extract a second from GWS to pay for Hanners?
Re Sheils. Sts don't have pick 5 its 3.
He'll pay half in tax, so $125 k for 5 years = $625k, or a one bedroom flat in Campeltown.
AFL players have to forge a career after AFL. They dont earn enough to retire from work at 35. $625k over the rest of his working life (another 30 years) is only $20k per year. Invest in an uni education while playing would be a more estute move financially.
You only get a small shot at a premiership, and that memory last forever.
I was a bit surprised when Paul Connors said Sheil won't be dealing with Swans, considering he & his girlfriend are happy to stay in Sydney and we will have cap space to make him an attractive offer. It seems bit at odds imo. This insuates both club & player don't want to deal with us regardless.
What you overlook is the extra exposure playing in footy mad Melbourne gives good players.
This can be used, and often is, to prepell their future careers...Especially if they wish to remain in the footy industry. But not exclusive to it.
Some take advantage of their notoriety and put their money into Restaurants, bars etc.
Many a career has been forged on the back of footy in Melbourne.
Hannebery alluded to this in an interview recently, when giving his reasons for wanting to return to Melbourne.

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.
