    AG more completely

    So re: snr players

    In:

    Thurlow
    Clarke
    Menzel
    Ronke ex Rookie
    Fox ex Rookie

    Out:
    Tippett to Rookie
    Hannes
    Newman
    Towers
    Rohan
    Foote
    Marsh
    Robinson

    Draft
    Blakey using picks 26 & 33
    Pick 38
    Pick 39
    Pick 40
(Pick positions will shift due to both trading and use of multiple picks by Swans, Pies and Kangas and maybe Dogs to match bids)
Depending on where bid for Blakey comes we could end up with loose change points on 33 which we could try and trade up pick 38 with or we might need to use some of 38 which could slip back in the draft order.

As it stands pick 40 is in Round 3 while 38 and 39 are Round 2. I believe that this has some salary implications for pick 40 who could be paid less than 38 and 39.

8 off Senior List and 9 on means we will run with 39 instead of the usual 38 on our Senior List. Probably possible because of salary cap relief through unloading players.

Plus, out: Foote, Marsh and Robinson.

This would equal 8 off the senior list to balance the three in plus 4 draftees and upgrade of Ronke. BUT, what about Fox? Is he getting upgraded too? Are we going to increase our list size?

Plus, out rookies: Johnson, Styles, Brown - with Tippett to take one of those places that means we will only be able to draft two rookies (Blair and Maguire?). Even if Fox is upgraded by increasing our senior list size we will have to shrink our rookie list correspondingly for a total list size of 46 (I think?).

    Rookies

    Cat A
    Pink
    Amartey
    Tippett (Needs to be drafted)

Can have five with senior list size of 39 so could draft two

    Cat B
    Bell
Can have three so can draft two
Blair and NSW academy rookies can go here

Option therefore of drafting 2 Cat A and 2 Cat B but it would be unusual for the Swans to fill their list completely.

Awesome news on Menzel. Best signing yet this trade period!

This conversation came out of a discussion on the bidding process and whether the bid (pick 3 in this case) always reflected his true value.
The fact, as you stated, that we could use a whole heap of lesser picks to get him is good and bad in some respects. Good in that we can get a top 10 pick without actually having a top 10 pick, and bad in that we were committed to taking him with whatever picks we had, so were at the mercy of the counter bidder who (may have) overbid his true value.

To be honest, I think the jury is still out if the whole academy/bidding process is working as intended. Or even if the intentions we think are there are the same as AFL HQ's views.

Menzel is a good use of a draft selction. IMO Firstly he is a capable AFL player with a big X factor. Pleased he had a fitness test. Should be good to go then!

    Stating the obvious.

    Buddy needs help. Fact.
Tippet isn't coming off the rookie list to help. Another fact.
Sinclair is most likely needed in the Ruck and therefore will not be more than a ruck resting forward.
McCartin needs a year or 2 to be a real problem to a structured backline. Keep him in the side please. (This kid will be a champion!)
Cameron must be close for a few games in 2019.
    Dawson must lift in 2019

Our small forwards are developing nicely and should be more than dangerous if they can get their collective game together. (so wanted to swear for collective game..)

Therefore if Menzel who is AFL ready and Reid play 11 games each for season 2019 we are likely to be well placed. I am suggesting that neither are likely to play 22 games. I consider that 11 games each is good use of their managed capabilities. (best and fittest to fight it out for the finals)

Our forward line has some real possibility in 2019 and change up options and there is some genuine x-factor going forward. (Presuming knees, hips and hammy's hold out!!

Now who misses out to play Menzel? Is he to play on the flank or FF/CHF key position. I would have him on the flank or pocket alternating between Buddy and McCartin, which pushes one of the smalls off the ground to the bench. Then the bench has a player removed.. (Dawson / Ronke need to work hard!)

Presume Clark replaces Hanners and Newman is replaced by O'Riordan / Melican / Mills

Blakey (assumption) will be looking for a game mid to late in the year.

    Nice depth for 2019 (hopefully)

Agreed. Geelong and Sydney are very similar teams. We took a starting 22 medium forward in exchange for us giving up a non-staring 22 medium forward. Win.

He'd be perfect for the Suns.....to teach them about 'resilience'. Boy, do they need it!
