SANFL finals debacle - 19th man (split thread)

It was only for about 24 seconds

Amazingly apparently similar thing happened in the sanfl prelim final. However the final margin was North by 5 points and the 19th player (North) was on field for 5 minutes according to @penbo on Twitter. But since no head count was called, they got away with it!

On Channel 7, apparently in the SANFL Prelim today North Adelaide might have had 19 on the ground for about the first 5 minutes of the last quarter.
North only won by 5 points & scores1.2 while they had 19 on the field. Now there might be a legal challenge from Woodville-West Torrens ...

And North came back from 47 points down to nab the win

Edit: Ugg you beat me to it while I was typing. It might not be over though

How on earth does that happen? As Paul Roos said when Swans senior team got pinged erroneously some years ago for supposedly having 19 players on the field through a supposed interchange error:

“All the interchange official has to do is look at the bench and count.”

So nobody looked at North’s bench for 5 minutes?

For the same reason, I can’t believe Brandon Jack’s tweet could possibly be right. Unless Southport had 23 players ...

Apparently the interchange stewards were told at the start of the last quarter, one of the players went to the rooms for treatment. Then they noticed that player was actually on field a few minutes in.

On the SANFL Prelim, the WWT coaches couldn't work out how North kept having a loose man who was linking the plays, kept trying to find who wasn't picking up their man!

This will be one to watch, SANFL have to wipe the North scores for that period thus changing the result.

I said same thing earlier but Ugg (?) explained that the interchange official had been told a player was in the rooms getting injury treatment and so the official thought three on bench was correct.

Wow, real mess in Adelaide. SANFL having emergency meeting this afternoon. Surely in this case the score kicked while there were 19 players would have to be scrubbed? And so result reversed?

‘Eagles officials are understood to have complained to a reserve umpire and interchange stewards about North’s extra player, a breach that could be penalised by wiping their entire score.
But under SANFL rules, only a captain or acting captain can ask an on-field umpire for a headcount of players to officially determine an extra-man breach, which didn’t happen.’

‘Eagles coach Michael Godden told The Advertiser his coaching unit battled to figure out North’s advantage during the final term. “We were in the box frantically trying to work out where this loose man was coming from,” he said.’

I guess it's interesting that North Adelaide haven't come forward and disqualified themselves from the game. I get it that
teams are desperate to win, but if their "victory" is allowed to stand and they go on to win the SANFL Grand Final next
week it will be ultimate in * premierships. Five minutes is a fair bit of game time to not notice you have an extra guy on
the field. Shouldn't be too hard to count up the number of guys on the bench/in the sheds. They only have to
count up to four. It's not really a huge number, and most people could probably do it in less than five minutes.

Of course, from the point of view of the waiting Norwood, a sensible solution would be, replaying the North/Eagles game on, say, Wednesday and then the winner plays Norwood in the GF on Sunday.

If it was a horse race, a protest (by the Eagles ) would be upheld and the result reversed .
Irrevelent that Norths kicked 12 goals in a row.

Yes, I did note the North Adelaide coach brought up the fact that his team had kicked twelve goals in a row as a point
of note in the discussion as to why no one in the North Adelaide "organisation" can count up to four. I guess they
got caught up in the excitement of all that goal scoring after being eleven goals down earlier in the match.

If it were as long as 4-5 minutes that North had 19 players, then it’s not only the 1 goal 2 points they kicked in that time, it’s that they had an extra player to defend against the Eagles attempts to attack. But for the 19th player the Eagles might have scored. Obviously can’t know the answer to that. A real mess!
