We just really needed a better outcome from that trade, which would have been him going elsewhere in Melbourne for a fair and reasonable return ( mid- late first round pick, early second round at worst ), or we managed to get him to re-sign again. Really poor to let a quality mid with pace go for a late second round draft pick. He was statistically the best rated wingmen in the comp in his last handful of games of 2019.

Sets a bad precedent for the future too I feel.

I think that the learnings for us going forward from losing Zac as well as others such as Mitchell and Membrey, is that we should try to avoid trading in demand, young players at the end of the final year of their contract. We should try and lock them into a longer contract in their second last season. If they won't deal then, trade them at the end of that season when our bargaining power is greater. Waiting and hoping that they will re-sign at the end of their contract is dangerous as we have found and means we get less in return. We got nothing for Membrey and Nankervis and below value for Mitchell and Jones. All were out of contract and so we had little bargaining power. Compare this situation to Papley where we hold all the cards and will get a good return if we decide to deal.

The only reason I’d disagree is (and I don’t know how many players, if any, this would apply to) whether we’ve managed to retain any players in the last year of their contract we’d otherwise have lost.

Haha I really hate when they do that too, I would never have gotten his name wrong if he were still a Swan. Not so invested in correctly naming Saints players

This might have gone in the COVID thread, or the Round 13 thread, but he's an ex-player so: interesting interview with Nicks.

    Nought, nothing, Nicks

Sounds like he's trying to be as positive and in-perspective as possible given the circumstances. I hope not too much blame goes his way given the exceptional circumstances for a first year, plus the ongoing Crows issues of various kinds.

Recent-ish audio interview with Goodesy. Nothing much new given the interviewer isn’t an AFL follower but good to hear Goodes’s voice nonetheless

Thx for this. Good luck to Barry- in essence a decent and honest guy. As a player, one of the club's all time matchwinners. Under rated as well.

Absolutely. Not many players play 289 games and kick just shy of 750 goals. Along with Adam, he was our best player from 2003
to 2006, and there'd be no flag in 05 without him. Sure, he's not perfect, but who is?

It was interesting how Hall said he felt the Saints were being arrogant by saving 2 of their players for the grand final because they thought they had the preliminary final already won. He used this to fire up the players before the game. That arrogance reminds me of their supporters that night!
