Both clubs would want a first round pick. How do Carlton conjure up that. If things follow the off season form guide Coniglio goes to Hawthorn.

Thanks for the correction MB. I didn't intend to overstate what M Lloyd said, I either misheard or remembered mistakenly. It did sound ominous when I heard it though as it seemed to give weight to the recent chatter.

Coniglio is a restricted free agent so the Carlton (or the Hawks) could sign him to a big enough contract that the Giants can't afford to match and it won't cost them a thing in terms of players or picks.

I agree with your caveat. But Carlton would screw us over totally in this situation - most probably give us a late second / early third rounder and we would just bend over like the good blokes we are............
Btw if anyone has a case to go home it would be Ollie. But he happily came to Sydney after the sad passing of his father with his mother's blessing. How's his brother shaping up?

I don't know if it's true but I heard that it's because of his girlfriend who is living in Melbourne.

Who is a nurse - an occupation very much in demand in Sydney ....

Sorry that does not cut it. If he actually wants to go, the club MUST in this circumstance do what is best for the club and it's supporters. They need to show the AFL that we will not be messed with. No one has done us any favours and we continually just play the good blokes too much. As I said, first rounder or no trade. I said earlier he can play NEAFL if he has a dummy spit - I'd go further and say he can just be sat out for a year, Gordon Tallis style when he broke his contract with the dragons to go to the Broncos in the league.

Papleys long time girlfriend is Melbourne based. Not sure if that's the reason or not because AFAIK he's always been happy in Sydney. Maybe the GFs given him an ultimatum?

The four retirements of senior players should mean that we have some cash to spend, which led me to review the list of free agents. It’s pretty thin: Former free agents among 50 names added to 2019 list - AFL.com.au.

You’d have thought we’d at least consider a bid for Coniglio, a restricted free agent.

The only other players that seemed in some way enticing were Tomlinson and Nicholls, particularly Nicholls. He could provide some value as a specialist ruckman, who is still pretty young (27). He hasn’t played AFL since 2016, although he was injured for almost all of 2018 and is stuck behind the durable and impressive Jarrod Witts.

But he has played the full year of NEAFL and seems to have done well. He polled votes in four (of 16) games: rounds 11(7 votes), 6(5), 5(6), and 1(1). I recall someone suggesting he played well against us on the weekend. He averages 15 possessions, 4 tackles and 41 hit outs a game.

Edit: the positive Nicholls review (up against our 4 rucks) was from barracuda:

I think Nichols also dominated the ruck and his tap work was very good.

Paps sounding very much like Kelly, given a shot by a club when no one else did and now the mrs is calling the shots
She should be thankful he didnt have to finish of his apprenticeship and is now set to get paid well due to the club that threw him a lifeline
