Thread: 2019 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

Gary Buckenara describes Cody H as:

“Given a chance as an over-age player at the Ranges, Hirst has great speed and has been able to use that to influence games from the wing this season. He was talked about as a possible rookie pick last year but missed out. He’s still developing and probably isn’t ready to play at AFL level yet, but a club that rates him highly could lock him away early to start developing him in their system rather than waiting until the national draft.”

He hasn’t included Kyle Dunkley in his list. Not sure why. His top 5 across all positions are:

    1. Corey Gault

    2. Sam Lowson

    3. Nathan Mullenger-McHugh

    4. Marlion Pickett

    5. Campbell Hustwaite

Project manager shapes as Mid-Season Draft bolter - AFL.com.au

Also, this from AFL.com.au - Page Not Found

What do they need? The Swans are going through a rebuild and have a few different positions they could look to fill, including down back and through the middle. A younger contested ball-winner might be on the menu, or maybe they go on the hunt for more speed.

Who's available? Kyle Dunkley is unlikely to still be on the board. Midfielder Josh Deluca spent four years on Fremantle's list, was best afield in last year's WAFL Grand Final and won the medal as the state league's best player against the SANFL a week-and-a-half ago. Dandenong Stingrays onballer Mitch Riordan and Eastern Ranges winger Cody Hirst may also appeal.

Do they have a pick? Yes, Kurt Tippett's official retirement has given the Swans the flexibility to add a player to their list and their pick is likely to be in the top five.

The whisper: Unless the Blues get in first, Deluca's AFL lifeline seems likely to be at Sydney, one of five clubs to speak to him. - MM

Reg retiring, could we be having two picks next Monday if the players we like make it through to a second rounder? This is in reality a free trial of a player/s

Sounds like he's improving and worth a look.....but then the club may decide he doesn't fit our 'no dickheads' policy, due to the former mentioned article. However, they have talked to him already.

My understanding is that Kyle is essentially an inside mid who can also play half-fwd as he did in his game for Footscray and that his performances as an inside mid is what has attracted the attention of scouts. Someone else might be able to confirm this?

It will be counted in their cap for this year but not for next year.

Apparently the difference is that Buddy was a free agent whilst Boyd was a traded player.

    What I would love to know is;
    * Have any free agents retired prematurely previously and if so, how were their retirements treated?
    * Does this rule apply to any other current players other than Buddy?
    * Was this a rule that was only introduced when we recruited Buddy?

It was a ruling only for Buddy

Good point Barry. In essence it is a very similar situation.

The AFL argued that our offer to Buddy put him out of the range of Hawthorn and other clubs. However, isn't that what the Bulldogs did by offering a second year player over a million $ a year?

It really is hard to argue that a different rule should apply to us.

With Carlton on the bottom, our Four Round trade for Newman is looking quite good.
But we need to trade our some players; both for picks and salary cap relief.
There is some good young talent out there, we just have to aggressive in targeting them.
Would love to get Balta and Bolton from the Tigers; they look brilliant against the Hawks with plenty of upside still there.

Surely, Adelaide don't get Carltons pick until the end of the year? I wouldn't have thought that pick swaps applied to the mid season draft.

There were a whole load of very dubious deals done when the Hawks recruited Ty Vickery on a 3 year deal that ended up only being 2. Who then retired after one year.

Which is why they have never made that argument in any meaningful way in any public forum. They just did us over and never explained why. And the sports media never called them to account.

Does anyone know why we don't seem to have an additional mid season draft selection on account of Maibaum's season ending injury? Or do we, and has it just been overlooked?
