    Best 22 for 2020

It’s a myth that Naismith is as somehow the reason we made the gf in 2016.

People conveniently forget that Buddy kicked 81 goals that year

A ruckman that averages 8 possessions and less than 2 marks a game isn’t up to it

Injuries have clearly hampered Sam throughout his career, but he turns 28 this year and I don’t hold out much hope for him as our saviour
Have to agree, Naismith was serviceable but Hardly ever did anything that stood out in a game. Nankervis arguably showed better glimpses than Naismith in the games he got in 2016.

Not to say Naismith might not develop into a good ruckman but I think he’s a got fair bit to prove before unseating Sinclair. If your going to play as a low possession , low marking, minimal physical presence , rarely scoring , pure tap ruckman , you want to be dishing it up like Gawn or Nic Nat. I don’t recall ever saying much tap wizardry from Sam , but my memory may be failing me as he hasn’t played in that bloody long !

Lets hope they both stay fit in 2020 and we can see which one earns the #1 spot on merit?

Sinclair is a good honest player but gets absolutely monstered by the likes of Grundy and Martin etc. Naismith, if fit, is a far better ruckman who gets first hand on ball and is quite agile around the ground. That's why the club has been so patient. This year will determine if they have been too patient.

Splitting hairs over which is better. The issue is that neither are much chop and the ruck is a really weak area for us.

If Sinclair was rucking for Richmond this year they still would've won the premiership

What that says about the importance of a dominant ruckman, I'm not exactly sure

Didn’t they end up playing 2 ruckman. And we ended up with zero?

With you 100%. This thought that Cal gets smashed in the ruck, leading to us being non competitive is misguided. We struggle because our midfield gets owned. JPK rediscovering his best, along with our young midfielders improving, is way more important then bringing in a slow, lumbering, giant who might win a few more hitouts (which will just fall randomly to the ground) over Cal, who at least contributes around the ground. Does anyone seriously think Naismith can even come close to matching Grundy or Gawn around the ground, when he can barely even keep up with McEvoy or Zac Smith?

can stephens slide in like Hayward to the best 22? or will he get half a season like Rowbottom and Ollie in their first seasons ?

He will get what is needed. If he deserves to play he will. If he impresses in the preseason he will play, if he doesn't he won't. It will mean he needs time. But I think he will be OK. No matter how light he was. I mean you could knock Fearless Fosdyke over by blowing on him but he was a hell of a player.

I think this year there will be some real vying for spots. Macca, Reg, Smithy, Kizza, Jonsie all gone. Does Foxy take the back pocket? I think this is his chance to cement a spot. Does Brand get Reg's spot? Who takes Jonsie's spot? Harry returns. Ronke will have learned how to beat the tagging defender. I can't wait to see him kick 10 and have 30 in the mids.

Dawson will be an absolute star. He showed just what he can do a couple of times last year. That goal where he stepped around three players was sensational. His kicking is elite.

Sam Naismith is tracking well and looks good in the drills. Can't wait to see Big Sammy back out there. His aggression was something we missed last year. He is tough, a very good tap Ruck and his second and third efforts are gold. He can also rove his own taps and being able to take the ball out of the Ruck suits him.

I think young Ling will come good. Riley Stoddart has added some really serious weight and dimension. He looks great. Oh and the hair is gone. Much better Riley. Grey and Taylor are interesting players. Grey is a really good player who was badly used at Port. I mean Port have made some really strange decisions over the summer. Delisting Grey and offering Howard, their best defender, a one year contract were two. My brother is a Power member and he is baffled by both.

Cal is not a tap to advantage Ruck. He is a try hard to get hand to ball Ruck. He is a second Ruck at most. Getting smashed in the mids is more complicated than saying Kennedy can't do it anymore, even though he had the 14th highest clearance date in the AFL last year. Win the rucks, have the right personnel in there and have the best set ups. Then you win the clearances. Naismith gives us a far better chance to win clearances. If the mid mix is right we win.
