    2021 VFL discussion thread

Swans have signed the first batch of topups for their VFL team. 9 of the 11 have played for the Swans Academy. Many names will be familiar to regular NEAFL watchers. No Paddy McCartin but the squad is far from finalised yet

Jake Bartholomaeus (QBE Sydney Swans Academy / Sydney University)

Nick Brewer (QBE Sydney Swans Academy / North Shore Bombers)

Darcy Cordell (QBE Sydney Swans Academy/ UNSW Bulldogs)

Max Geddes (QBE Sydney Swans Academy / UNSW Bulldogs )

Ryan Hebron (QBE Sydney Swans Academy, North Shore Bombers)

Lachlan McAndrew (QBE Sydney Swans Academy / Manly Wolves)

Harry Morrison (Sydney Uni, Sturt, Old Geelong)

    Ben Silvagni (Carlton Football Club)

Sam Thorne (QBE Sydney Swans Academy / UNSW Bulldogs)

Reed van Husstede (QBE Sydney Swans Academy / Newcastle City)

Aidan Watling (QBE Sydney Swans Academy / Newcastle City)

McAndrew had some supporters as a rugby player turned AFL player. Nice if he turns out as well as our Canadian ruck

I'm glad to see his name. I think he's about 208cm and from seeing him in one of the academy games last year, he gets over the ground fairly well. Playing rugby probably also means that he can lay a tackle.

I am hearing a few names being linked to us. Some ex reserves players who have gone interstate for a start.

It will be an interesting experiment. I hope we do well. It will be a lot more difficult than the NEAFL.

I'm assuming we are not allowed to move players listed as VFL East coast top ups onto our main list in times of need?

I wonder whether any players may work their way onto a main list via our VFL team? It certainly seems to be a better competition for one to showcase their talents than the old Neafl comp.

Pleased to see that they have generally targeted NSW players. May get a mature aged option in future drafts. Hopefully they will be competitive.

Some of the other AFL-affliated clubs have signed quite a few ex-AFL players - Southport have signed 6, Carlton and Box Hill 5

Also spotted some familiar names on other clubs' lists:
Cody HIRST, Harry REYNOLDS and Ryley STODDART at Carlton
    Zac FOOT at Casey
Kyle GALLOWAY and Jack MAIBAUM at Coburg
    Angus STYLES at Frankston
    Sam MURRAY at Williamstown

Galloway was interesting. In his time at the Swans he was pretty ordinary. Maybe because he was still learning the game. He has probably developed over the years. Rucks often develop late but new to the game rucks take even longer.

Sam Murray has all the talent but his drug indiscretion has let him down badly. I hope he has learned from that and is a success.

I thjnm Zac Foot could be good for a second chance. I thought he didn't look out of place.

Angus Baker, another academy graduate is training with Essendon and may be added via the supplementary list too.

Good that Jake Bartholomaeus has been given a chance . Twice best and fairest in NEAFL and in the Syd Uni premiership team this year. While I havent watched him play , queston how much someone can do to get noticed.
