Those who can kick who played on Sat.Originally posted by Spong
Bloody Longmire!
But he can't take all the blame, our general field kicking is pathetic. Example: delivery to Hall!!!!!
Hall, Goodes (just), Barry, Ablett (standing start),O'Keefe, C.Bolton, Vogels?,Dempster, Moore, Davis (when he plays)
Those who can't and why.
Kirk - floaters, slow motion action, lack of strength, rolls the ball over in his hands
Buchanan - low to ground and gets little lift off, seems strong enough but doesn't have the skill/action right
O'Loughlin - ball drops sideways to the right hence his propensity to slice the kick for goal. Looks to be the way he holds the ball.Usually OK on the run. Technique problem he has always had.
Ablett - drops it wrong when on the run. Slews off the foot or becomes a mongel punt.
J. Bolton - another who seems to roll the ball over when dropping it onto his foot. Same as Buchanan (low to ground) lacks strength and speed when kicking. Note when he is running in for a goal with a good head of speed he seems to get distance. Not always accuracy.
Mathews - Looks like a lack of strength and another who has slow leg speed. Usually hits the ball OK but gets poor penetration
and drops it crooked on the run.
Crouch - Another low to the ground player (grass cutter) who drops it crooked hence mongrel punts. Appears to have lack of strength when kicking.
Bevan - poor kicking technique. Another who doesn't drop it straight. Probably never taught as a kid coming from rugby background.
LRT - Ditto
Schauble - doesn't get a lot of penetration. Don't know about him. Probably technique and another slow coach.
Spriggs - see Bolton, Buchanan etc. Lack of leg strength.
My theory on slow players is that right from a young age, because of their slowness they needed to hurry their kicks otherwise they were gunned down, therefore did not have the time to hone their skills.
My observations over the years is that players quick across the ground are usually better kicks. Paul Williams is an example. Yep, there are probably plenty of exceptions to the rule too.
Our solution - recruit players who can kick.
My 2 bobs worth and likely to be labelled as a load of old cobblers by some.
