What could have been if Terry Wallace was coach of the Swans?
Wallace is going through his honeymoon period with his new time just like Roos had his in 2003(short memories.........). His test will come (with Brown out it may well already have).

The real test of a coach doesn't come when the team is up, it comes when it's down and the jury is still out on Roos but no doubt, it does not look good right now. On a similar topic it'll be interesting watch how Brisbane go in the next 12 months (or even in the next 2). If Matthews is that good he'll have Brissy playing high finals next year.

Matthews has never really been tested/proven with a developing squad.

Sheedy would be my pick for a replacement coach.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Consider the thought of a 'mad' coach and some of the alternative names mentioned here, both for and against by other posters?

Blight - truly eccentric, but the bloke won two flags with a team that was at best slightly above average

Malthouse - babbles on about Chinese theology and riddles but won two flags at the WC and got an ordinary Collingwood to two GFs.

Matthews - a man who walks to the beat of his own drum and took a young side up to 3 Premierships, as well as one with the Pies.

Sheedy - martians, seagulls, do I need to say more. A few flags there.

Roos - a nice, normal, decent, conventional guy. A side going backwards fast.

    I'll take a nutjob anyday.

Heh, good points there. I suppose you have to consider though, its like the chicken & the egg debate. Were they crazy before or after they became good coaches? Perhaps they started off sane and coaching for many years has made them CRAAAZY.. Roos might blow his top any second, its always the quiet ones that implode and go nuts. Perhaps if we wait out this sane patch, Roosy will come good and start doing all kinds of crazy things - when he starts doing the crazy chicken dance at quarter time then i'll jump back on the roosy bandwagon

I reckon Roos has two options to secure his job for the short to medium term.

Option 1 - get a top four finish this year and in the process, increase the scoring by about 30%. The two are related and this obviously depends on the players ability to radically alter their style of play for the rest of the season.

Option 2 - get a bottom four finish, blood most of younger or fringe players and turnover the list at the end of the year. 'Unfortanately' we have already won 5 games, so no priority picks.

Seems that the choice between the two will depend a lot on the next 3 weeks. Even if we lose just the Carlton game, he should start to ponder option 2.

His worst choice is to try to slug it out towards bottom-8 by sticking to the current strategy, playing the same offenders week in and week out. IMO, if he does this the fat lady (or Nick Davis) will start warming the vocal chords.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

    I agree,
This is exactly what the Swans refuse to do when the rot sets in.
I suppose you should admire their never say die attitude, but at times it is just plain dumb when you consider what they are up againts with the way the draft is structured ect.

Personally i blame SSI and that Blandis joker.

Afterall don't they claim they got Roos appointed with that campaign three years ago. Remember the protest meeting outside the Swan's office and the silly petition.

But who knows if Wallace, Blight, Sheedy or anyone else would be better?

    Maybe we're just crap.

Well, it's really a fault in the system that it rewards mediocrity instead of providing assistance for clubs in genuine need of help.

I find the thought of tanking games quite objectionable, even if the "rewards" are good. IMO, the club should be trying to win every single game it plays. Now, if it so happens that we're just not any good and finish on the bottom, then I will look forward to the first draft pick as a CONSOLATION.

Otherwise you end up with the ludicrous situation where teams will deliberately try to lose games when it's clear they won't challenge for a flag. For some teams, that might be after 8 rounds. For others it might be after 14, or 18. The sight of 10 teams not giving a crap in the last 3 or 4 rounds WILL lead to the eventual demise of the AFL, no question about it.

Anyway, that's getting a little off topic. Roos is a good coach IMO, but he is suffering from a major case of 2nd (and 3rd) year blues. I'm not certain a new coach would have much of an impact, unless there's a major restructure of the list at the same time.

No doubt some here will push for both

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

If we get rolled by Carlton in a close game that resembles the 2002 Colonial Stadium game against the Saints, will the events of mid 2002 be revisited?

By the way, and it may have been already posted, Robert Walls said he was walking behind a group of Melbourne Swans supporters after the game who were debating whether they would bother coming back next week. That is sad, because over all the years from the 60's to when they moved to Sydney I never heard people say that. It was always, oh well there is always next week.

Crowd numbers this week will be very interesting as will the amount of red and white. On looking around the ground last week it just seemed to me that there was a fair bet less of our colours than usual.

How must Tony Morwood be feeling about his add campaign to 10,000 Melbourne members. We are in a PR crisis and I don't hear too many spin doctors coming to our aid.

Thats fantastic. Supporters who demand success. The sooner we move away from "oh well there is always next week." the better.
