Really interesting browse of those stats Mike.

    Comparing to 2004:

Goodesy is kicking more goals (different possie obviously)
Tiger isn't kicking goals at all
Kirky is making most of our tackles by a long long way
Davis, ROK and Monty and kicking poorly for goal (nothing new)

3 BRILLIANT YEARS from Baz makes him a genuine star.

The goal scoring difference is interesting. In 2003 we were averaging 15 goals per game against our 12 this year.

The goalkickers to rd 12 are/were:
    Code:
    Player 2005 2003
    Hall 36 35
    Davis 11 21
    O'Keefe 12 7
    Cresswell -- 6
    Williams 2 9
    Maxfield 1 8
    Fosdike -- 8
    Jolly 5 --
    O'Loughlin 24 15
    Kennelly 0 4
    Ablett 5 0
    J Bolton 2 7
    Nicks 1 11
    Schneider 2 16
    Buchanan 5 --
    Goodes 11 14
    Vogels 5 --
    Others 19 20
We've lost Nicks as a goalkicker, but O'Loughlin has kicked more.

Davis is well down, although he's had nearly as many shots (23 v. 28).

Our midfield (those listed above) produced 38 goals in 2003 but only 15 this year.

We are missing a small forward, a la Schneider in 2003.

These last two account for all of the difference between 2003 and 2005.

That's a huge difference. One thing that I think a lot of people overlook when thinking that we should be improving on 2003 is that our midfield is actually quite a bit worse. Cressa is gone and Williams & Maxfield are two years older (and Maxfield may be gone now). They were our three best midfielders in 2003. We've still probably got a couple of years to wait until the youngsters step up - McVeigh, Willoughby & Moore looking the most likely.

We are missing a small forward, a la Schneider in 2003.
I reckon that the treatment of Schneider has been one or Roos' biggest mistakes. Not all little blokes need to be midfielders - just leave him in the forward line.

IIRC, Davis was a dead-eyed dick in 2003. He had something like 21.7 around this stage. The numbers prove that we don't kick enough goals from the midfield. Cressa was handy for us, but Maxfield and Willo's output has dropped.

Yup - goals from the midfield is the key difference. Missing Willo for a few weeks hasn't helped but it can't all be put down to that.

Ablett is probably the midfielder who has been most offensive, in terms of at least trying to kick goals. His poor accuracy means he hasn't delivered the big ones though.

Cressa has really fallen away after 2003. Might be time to move on.

(Actually saw him at the Brisbane Cup on Monday having a punt!)

Just had another look at the numbers and its surprising that Kennelly hasn't kicked a goal this year. I know he plays down back most of the time, but I always get pumped when he kicks one, because they mainly result from a big run and finish. I know he had at least one poster this year.
