If he acknowledges it and accepts it, why not roll the injury dice and throw him in to the ruck for 20% of the time? If that's too much, use him only against the top teams and drop the second ruck for these games. If thats still too much, use it as a finals strategy!

Just get Pyke to do the centre square and get Goodes doing the rucking around the ground. His work around the ground and second efforts will be superior to Mumford's. Great thinking and congratulations on your bravery. You will cop it Goods78, but I will be there with you and I'm use to copping it!

    Keep dreaming.

Goodsey's Brownlow winning ruck form was before multiple knee injuries. These have affected the consistency & vertical potency of his leap in marking & ruck contest. He's simply not the same calibre in ruck contests and can't rely on height alone that a genuine 200+cm ruckman can.
As for being his last year, that will hopefully be a pessimistically premature call. I'm hoping that he'll continue the form that he showed in his first game back & be an effective quick & agile tall forward/winger or specialist sub player who can come on for immediate impact into pretty much any position on the ground. But that might just be an optimistic wish to keep Goodsey playing for us

What makes him very valuable is that he is the best goal-kicking ruckman in the AFL. He is the best 2nd ruck in the AFL due to his goal kicking ability. He is also as valuable as any player in the elite key forward group because none of the above guys can play effectively in the ruck.

Let's use Tippetts second ruck capability and get more mobility and speed into the team, compared to playing LRT or Tom D in the team!
This is the key point. Tippett is good at this important role of being the top Ruck/Forward in the game. If he can't ruck, I would trade him at the end of his contract. Nanko can do both.

What problem has Tippo got? Knees. Playing him as ruck on those dollars! Protect your investment I say.
Not all knee problems are the same. Goodes tore his PCL from a direct knock to the knee, a common problem with rucking, so it was a problem continuing playing in the ruck with his injury.

We don't know exactly what Tippett's problem is, but the latest reason is tendinitis. It really depends on whether Tippett's knee problems will be prevent him from rucking. It's really a medical decision that hasn't been made public yet. Maybe the medical staff don't know at this time.

The 2nd ruck is barely providing a contest for us ATM - I am sure that Adam could do no worse. When the ball hits the deck, we could have an elite additional midfielder.

I hope you are right about it being his last year. But if he has made the decision, I think it could be an option. The other advantage with Goodes is that he has the metal strength to play with some injuries and perform at top level.

The most danger of injury is the centre bounce when bodies are clashing at speed. Why can't Tippet handle throw ins and bounces in the forward 50?

Sometimes there is nothing better than waiting a week and reading RWO in game posts. It's all game over/we are done mentality.
It's early in the year we are playing a side desperate to defend on a cold night at the G. Take the four points and relax. With the open nature of this year we have the chance to slowly work our way into the season. So we are at our peak for finals. Unlike last year

That is so correct. Why can?t we use Tippett and Goodes around the ground to handle the boundary line throw ins to give some relief to Pyke? Pyke can do all the centre squares.

Another strategy may be the old kick behind the play with Tippett and Goodes doing ruckwork in the forward 70m arc, with Pyke playing a kick behind the play. Pyke could be quite useful in filling holes in defence with strong marking and quick handball to Malceski.

I want to congratulate Goods78 and Ludwig for proposing some alternate strategies to the Swans second ruck concern. Too many people on this forum have the set position of complaining about LRT and Tom D as the second ruck option, but they complain louder when someone proposes to put Tippett and Goodes in the ruck as a solution. Just like the Federal Budget there are no magic pudding fixes to this concern.

    +1

If all our talls are fit this week, and (touch wood) No one is injured this week, we'll be fielding our best 22 (bar AJ) against the Hawks for the first time since 2012. Our form's on an upward trend, we're back to blue collar work in the midfield, we've got the best back 6 in the business and what will be the best forward line in the comp once it settles. There's lots of reasons to be excited.

The kid can't do anything Tippett can do at this stage, and there's a reasonable chance he'll never reach his level.

Tippett barely rucked last year but he was still our most important player when he was on the field. He's very underrated.

Last year we had both Pyke and Mummy, so he didn't have to ruck. We are not in the same position this year. Of course I agree with you about Nankervis, but do see him as a long-term replacement for that Forward/Ruck role as he seems to be doing pretty well at both. He's always been know as an excellent kick for goal.
