Melbourne are to me a "hard-luck" story created by the AFL. I am sure there are other contributing factors but I see one contributing factor I want to call out. All three teams populated with early and priority draft picks are struggling, even years after the help began. GC, GWS and Melbourne lose very badly and very consistently. I think the draft is a great idea when it gets good talent into existing sides. However I think the Melbourne, GWS and GC experience indicates that it does not work without a critical mass of good senior players. Melbourne played the game the AFL setup, the problem was that the AFL and Melbourne didn't realise how important senior on-field talent is for turning good young players into great AFL players. If I am right, then a new coach won't make much difference either.
It won't be easy: look how long it has taken Carlton to climb back into reckoning, even with better coaching (imho), many more members and longer established structures.
Our own history is instructive too: it took a major overhaul and AFL control to get the club back on track, and even then it took the united voices of the players and the fans to overcome the plans the powers that be had for our new coach back in 2002. So you have to plan carefully. And it helps if you get lucky.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
Good luck Roosy...you'll need it with that basket case of a club.
Anyway, they'll need to wait another year, if he keeps to his word of staying in Sydney until his kids finish school.
I also love the symmetry of Roos to save Melbourne.....'For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction'...Love it.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT
Carlton people always whinge about how losing the draft picks hurt them sooooooo badly and set them back for years. It's nonsense - having Goddard and Wells would hardly have changed a thing at all. 2 players? Give me strength.
They traded pick 16 for a hasbeen ruckman called Barnaby French....They got Kade Simpson with pick 45.....they chose Cameron Croad instead of Nick Malceski, and finally with their late picks.....which they used instead of Goddard and Wells, they chose
Brad Fisher, Karl Norman and Laurence Angwin when they could have had any 3 of Brent Moloney, Brad Sewell, Craig Bolton, Michael Firrito, Joel Patful, Nick Maxwell, Michael Osborne, Mark Nicoski, Jason Porplysia or Joel MacDonald!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
And it's the AFLs fault!!! Not ;-)

"The former Sydney Swans premiership coach has been approached to take over the fledgling club by AFL heavyweights, who are concerned about the club?s future."
As in , AFL figures associated with Melbourne Football Club ? Or as in , the AFL heirarchy ? I am no socialist , though I do support , of necessity ,the 'socialist' nature of the AFL's financial support and draft pick pecking order for under-performing clubs : it is not like England's soccer league, where ninety-two professional clubs do battle in a Darwinian 'survival of the fittest'. In a smaller , parochial market , that would be disastrous.
Regardless , the governing body should have NO say in who coaches a club. Maybe Jeff Kennett was right when he called Andrew ' Dracula ' Demetriou a 'benign dictator'.
When Demetriou said a few weeks ago that the AFL would offer any assistance needed to MFC , What did he mean ?
"Can we have John Longmire to coach us?"
"NO!"
"Can we force Ablett , Swan , JPK , ROK , Cloke etc to play for us?"
"NO !"
"Can we have an extra million added to the salary cap - to give the players an incentive to play better?"
"NO!"
"But you will give us any help we need , right?"
"YES ! Of course !"
