    Rule Interpretations 2022

Just up on the AFL website, new interpretations for this season. Driving the head to get a free really annoys me, as does ducking/buckling at the knees.

In summary, the 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership Season will see the following:

    Time Delay
In 2022, Umpires will be less lenient towards Players who deliberately delay the play. A Free Kick or 50-Metre Penalty will be awarded under existing Law 19.2 (f).
In 2022, Umpires will no longer give a warning to Players who deliberately engage in Time Wasting and a Free Kick will be awarded under existing Law 18.13 (d).

    Holding the Ball
In 2022, Umpires will be less lenient towards Players who have had Prior Opportunity and do not immediately and Correctly Dispose of the Football when they are Legally Tackled under existing Law 18.6.2.
In 2022, a Free Kick will be awarded against a Player who ducks their head prior to being Legally Tackled and does not immediately and Correctly Dispose of the Football. Umpire cues for Prior Opportunity includes: evading, fending, ducking, has a prior option (i.e. goes to handball / kick and decides not to), is balanced and steady, is awarded a mark or free-kick, or drives their head.

the small forwards will need to adapt to the ducking which is probably a nice adjustment given the last two seasons it has been in their favour more so

these rule adjustments also speed up the game even more: which will favour lighter bodied mids doing their 6min x 2km runs.....plus more zone defence to negate such fast movement

I'm glad they are cracking down on Time Delay. It always annoys me after a mark or free when the opposition won't let our player get up. That should definitely be 50 metres.

Me too. Lets hope it is more than a 4 week fad and it continues throughout the season.

Are they maintaining the sub-clause to the correctly dispose element of the rule that reads: "Unless you're a cheating Bulldog, in which case you can drop, spill, throw or otherwise illegally dispose of the ball."?

I await the new season to see if the VFL is going to continue letting the umps give the Dogs a fairytale ride. I don't hold out much hope :-(

Seems that Carlton may have bought a lemon. Hewitt is an excellent high tackle recipient... if they are clamping down on this action, his trade value must be lower... LOL

The prior opportunity thing...that really frustrates me. If a player if trying to make the play, that is get the ball and do something with it, then he should be rewarded for it, not penalised by reducing the opportunity to dispose of the ball. It's a change in the rule that will favour players second to the ball.
I can see a bunch of players standing around the ball unwilling to pick it up because the moment they do they will tackled and give away a free kick.

Has he seriously? There's nothing three and a half hours later on the AFL or Cats websites about this.

I can't see anything about Selwood retiring. Rumourmongering.

I'm assuming that it was a satirical comment on the AFL crackdown on ducking.
