So what happens if the player kicking in kicks straight to an opponent who then plays on and kicks a goal all whilst the goal umpire is waving the flag from the previous behind...?

Stupid rule.

Stupid rule. I agree with you Dave, I asked that question and no-one had an answer for me:confused:

They were basically too chicken to just get rid of the flags and risk upsetting the oldies. I don't remember anyone caring when they ditched the lab coat and moustache uniforms though.

Hey! Who are you calling old???

As a goal umpire myself (Winston Hills U9's no less) I am quite happy to stand on the goal line with my white coat and flags during footy season.

I'm even inclined to do it during cricket season...

I'm not so worried about the Quick Kick in rule. I dont agree with it, but I dont think It's always going to occur. Just cause you can kick in straight away doesn't mean you will, if there's still no option available.

It just seems pointless. Why mess with it?

Maybe because of the fumble Tadgh had in the GF when trying to kick out before the flags were waved. If it was play-on WCE could have scored a goal. Is it that type of situation where you get a second chance that they are trying to eliminate?

The umpires should all be in their proper position before play resumes and this rule prevents that.

If they want to speed up the game how about not waiting for the ads to finish before they have a centre bounce?

Come now Dave, We all know they cant do that.

1) It makes too much sense and
2) Sacrifice the almighty dollar? Wash your mouth out...

They did in fact address this issue in the recent review which has resulted in these rule changes as one of the reasons that games went on much longer than they used to - oddly enuff, they didn't see fit to change it.

I assume it's because play gets under way quicker and without teams having time to sett up defensively it means that the team with the ball has more chance of taking the ball forward rather than chip it around in their D50.

If they want to speed up the game how about not waiting for the ads to finish before they have a centre bounce? Because people watching on TV will miss each bounce. Also, I think they are trying to speed up game play not necessarily finish the game sooner.

That is only a problem since they started showing an ad for every goal. This is the real reason they want to cut down on "ugly" football. More goals = more ads = more revenue.

They've been doing that for years.

So the goal umpire at the other end can mark his scorecard appropriately.

He should just write him a letter and send it by runner.

Or send an SMS. Use the fourth umpire to run up the other end to tell him...there's no other use out there for another umpire:mad: Unless he's out there to be the umpire who gets abused so we leave the ones alone that are officiating in the game;)

Good man yourself Dave!

Damn those ads piss me off something shocking. I can hardly believe it. In fact it causes considerable trouble between me and my wife because I go on about too much when the game is on. Jesus it pisses me off!!! Ever heard of a replay? Ads fro bloody pest control are not required at footy o'clock!

I was living in Townsville in 1996, whilst I was saddened by our GF loss that year, I was even more annoyed that 7/Prime placed more importance on the ads than they did on the game. You got to see the opening bounce of each quarter, but each bounce after a goal was missed due to them finishing the ad that they had put on as soon as a goal was kicked. At least now you get to see the bounce, but I don't agree with holding up the game for the ads. Surely they could bounce the ball, and show the rest of the game on a slight delay. Then they could catch up with the "live" play during the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 time breaks.

Aside from the play itself, the big concern is for the runners and trainers who used that time to tend to the players in that part of the field - the rule states that we can't be in the 50m arc once a player has kicked the ball, which essentially gave us the flag waving time to get the hell out, but now we're stuffed - if the ball comes back in and we are caught dead in the middle of the 50, it's an automatic bounce.

I imagine the umpires would be in a proper position already if they were doing their job properly before the behind was kicked. If it was OOB then we dont wait for them to get in position as it can be played on.

Can we start a petition to bring back the Goal Umpires Lab Coat and Porno Moustache - they need a bit more character, I mean if the field Umps can wear their loud colours, why cant the goal Umps wear the bright coloured lab coat - and have Barry White music playing as they enter the arena. they need a bit more Oomph!
