The Katoomba-Lithgow Mountain Lions, playing their first game since mid-April, traveled to Parkes last Saturday and took on the Parkes Panthers at North Parkes Oval in overcast conditions that were good for football.

Despite going down the Mountain Lions put in a very good performance with Cullen Bullen?s Bob Dobson, better known for his role in motorsport in the Central West, coming out of retirement to kick two handy goals that saw the Mountain Lions leading at the first break.
Toby Wellington, playing his first game of Australian football, was everywhere in the midfield for the Mountain Lions. He was ably supported across the middle by Dav Stritch, Charlie Body and Steve Cutler. Isles was a brick wall for the Lions down back while Dave Bridgeland contributed across the half forward line with a handy goal.

After the Mountain Lions took the early lead the Panthers regrouped before half time with their superior fitness telling in the end as they ran out 77 point winners. Despite the result the raw talent of the Mountain Lions was on display with a cohesive and committed effort.

Communication between players showed a marked improvement and the result was even more impressive given the fact that the Mountain Lions had fourteen players unavailable.

The result shows that the hard work the boys have been putting in on the training track is starting to pay off. Training continues this Thursday night at Katoomba Falls Reserve. Next week it will be Wednesday night at Tony Luchetti and Thursday night at Katoomba Falls Reserve. Training starts at 6pm and anyone interested in playing senior footy is encouraged to attend or to contact the secretary on 0415 463 585. Any boys aged 13-16 who wish to play with the junior side are also encouraged to attend training or contact the club.

The under 17?s battled hard against a well disciplined and experienced Parkes outfit but still showed good improvement. It was pleasing to see some new faces in action and the result didn?t reflect the big effort the boys put in.

The Mountain Lions are also raffling a signed Sydney Swans jumper that will be drawn at the clubs home game against Orange on June 14. Tickets are only $2 each or three for $5 and are available by phoning 0415 463 585.

This Saturday the Mountain Lions travel to Dubbo to take on the Dubbo Demons and with the return of many of those who were unavailable last Saturday, especially across the backline, a strong showing is expected against last years CWAFL premiers. A bus will be departing the Lithgow Hotel at 8am next Saturday morning.
