Freakish result - but, was Brisbane unlucky? I thought that time was up only when the umpire raises his arms, which is normally a couple of seconds after the siren goes (to allow for the ump's reaction). Not having seen the match (no Foxtel) but only highlights on news - did anyone think that Power took the mark before the umpire raised his arms to call time up?

Great win by the Saints though - I don't support them but looks like they took a leaf out of the Swans book ;)
Tribute to the evenness of the AFL atm.

the umpire definitely called game before the ball reached power

These sort of incidents highlight, IMO, one of the best rules of our game.

The rule says something like this, the quarter does not finish until the one of the three umpires hears the siren and it totally his decision then to adjudicate on what may or may not have happened before or after he hears the siren. He should signal the end of the quarter as a sign to the timekeeper that he has heard the siren but that is all that signal is intended for.

Given that sound travels at about 330m/sec there could be anything between 1/4 and 3/4 of a second when a spectator/tv hears the siren and when the umps hear it. The time when spectators/tv hear the siren is irrelevent, we simply cannot adjudicate on that unless we are standing right next to the umpire making the call.
