Just got back from the game. Good win, we played mediocre footy in the second quarter but were good in the other three. I managed to stay dry after it started raining in the last.

My flag got a workout during the game. For some of the goals I gave my flag to a kid sitting next to me so he could wave it instead.

LRT is fine - he was playing in the forward line in the last part of the game so he's OK. Malceski seems to be the only injury that will force a change. I'm hoping that C Bolts gets another week off so Schmitty the possy machine can get to make his debut.

Another 3 votes to Goodesy.

Schneider played very well also. Becoming a bit of a vital cog in the team.

Fair dinkum I cant work out why they dont go for Davis every time they go into F50. Apart from that dumb push out he was as dangerous as it gets. He was very dark a few times when he made position as the go to and was ignored.

Was a very tough game with a heap of very hard close in bumps in the greasy conditions. Big win but I bet there are a few sore boys tonight.

Crouch has a hand injury from that tackle in the back pocket early in the last Q. Stayed on but was still carrying it after the game.

Foreign Legion
28th May 2006, 12:21 AM
Good effort from the boys in a pretty easy win.

Barry Hall showed a LOT of guts to stay on the ground after Brown put the knee right into his ribs/stomach in the 2nd qtr. Most players would have been off for the night I reckon.

Guerra - well, lets say he will be resting for at least 3 weeks. Ablett did well on Hodge and Goodesy is a machine.

Kennelly must be retained at all costs - he just gives us so much drive and skill from the backline. O'Keefe had probably his worst night for the season but still redeemed himself late in the game - he's allowed 1 off night anyway.

Bring on the Roos - we should be ruthless with them - I still remember '96.

A nice solid win, except for a flat second quarter, with everyone playing quite well to very well.

IMHO best were Davis, Schneider, Fosdike, Kirk, Williams, Jolly, Hall.

Goodes played well but no way 3 votes.

As I've said in recent weeks, most pleasing thing about our form now is that we are actually using our very potent forward line and we go forward with purpose and control.

Or Hodge's swinging elbow to Luke Ablett's mouth on the wing that ended up with Noggie taking a spell on the bench for the blood rule. I think Alastair Clarkson is in gaga land, or is it just denial?
While the scoreboard did not reflect an even match, statistically, not much separated the teams, according to Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson.

"We beat them at hard ball gets, beat them at clearances. Believe it or not, we had the same scoring shots at three-quarter time," Clarkson said.

"Our inside 50s were similar, our possessions were similar, everything about the game, the two teams were very, very similar except that they were able to convert their opportunities and the opportunities they got they were able to kick easy goals because we made terrible turnovers with the footy."

No he's not.

I'm a bit surprised how many are talking up our performance in this thread.

Up until half way through the 3rd they were smashing us in the clearances, contested possessions. Their skill level was attrocious and ours was excellent and our conversion inside 50 and on goal was very good, that was the difference at 3q time.

It's fantastic to see our skills so good remembering how much of an issue it was 4 odd years ago but this game was an uneven performance at best.

That sort of performance in close will see us smashed by Adel. WC and Collingwood. A bit of work to do there.

I agree with you in the sense that I didn't think the Swans played particularly well. Right from the opening bounce I thought they looked flat and they were missing their intensity at the contest for most of the match. Their skills were nothing like as sharp as two weeks ago against the Tigers.

However, I also think Clarkson is deluding himself. Despite a relative downer in intensity from the Swans, the Hawks never looked in the same league. Many of their possessions were pointless, and even those that weren't, rarely looked incisive or dangerous. The way that the Swans took the ball from defence and, with two or three possessions, took it the length of the ground to create an easy scoring chance should provide the Hawks with some clue about how to play the game.

I reckon the Hawks put in the worst performance against us of any team we've played this season. I think I'd rate the Tigers' effort as better, despite the scoreline.

Mike_B
28th May 2006, 11:47 AM
Agree about our performance. I listened to the first quarter on the radio last night, then was out and came home to see the final score, watched the replay this morning. We were very ordinary IMHO, but that seems to be our general MO when we play poorer teams - drop to their level.

Leeroy
28th May 2006, 11:50 AM
19 goals to 8 without playing too well isn't a bad result. Still, I hope Bolton Craig is around when we play better teams. The lack of his cool, calm play was noticeable.

Certainly nothing like the Richmond supporters of the other week.

Had an obnoxious Hawthorn supporter behind me (and there werent many in the Ponsford Stand) who cheered everytime a Swans player appeared to get hurt. He was so obnoxious when LRT got hit that I understood why some people get into fights at the footy. In Sydney I rarely have to deal with opposition supporters. But I agree NMW that sometimes you can just be unlucky and should be careful not to let one person cloud your opinion of an entire club. Except Port. And St Kilda. They're not isolated incidences.

BTW, the MCG is magnificent. I had a padded seat on the first tier and it was general admission ie $19.70!! Possibly the best stadium in the world.

I remember the last game at Waverly in 1999, when the Hawks destroyed us by 85 points. If we had won we would have finished 5th and instead we finished 8th and were smashed by the Bombers in finals the following week.

That's what I meant - some bad punctuation in my initial post

I remember the last game at Waverly in 1999, when the Hawks destroyed us by 85 points. If we had won we would have finished 5th and instead we finished 8th and were smashed by the Bombers in finals the following week.

Unfortunately I remember that game too. My sister and I stayed to the bitter end and then got stuck in traffic on the way to the airport and almost missed our flight home. The best part of the day was the numerous Hawks supporters who wished us luck the following week as they weren't in the finals that year.

I'm glad I read the last few posts in this thread, I was starting to think I'd had more wine than I thought. I was underwhelmed by the performance on Saturday night too. A win by a margins such as that is always good, but the last few weeks have made me greedy for fast, exciting and skill-packed performances.

Indeed a 10 goal result is always great.
I have 1 concern other than Paul Chambers.
I was surprised at how well Campbell did on Hall, either he's phenomenally quick and fit for a ruckman or our disposal to Barry was less than optimal.

Campbell did play very well, but Hall was also injured from fairly early in the game. Hall could easily have kicked 5 goals, which is a fair return.

I'd assumed he'd been winded, how injured is he?

He took a knee to the rib cage. The commentators were wondering about a broken rib.

I don't know about his ribs, but that hit would have slowed anyone down for a while. Watching the game live and then on tv, I got the sense that many of the boys need a rest...they look tired and sore. I have especially noticed that Barry seems to get up very carefully every time he ends up on the deck, like he is sore in the groin/abdominal area.

I hope that it is just my natural paranoia about injuries and not a real concern, but I reckon the break can't come soon enough for some of them.

I remember that one! It was the last game at Waverly! I was pretty down after we got so thoroughly smashed after all the weekend's results went our way for a good finish, but the highlight was watching everyone demolish the ground! I ended up with a piece of turf that still grows in my backyard to this day!

As to the game, I'm with those who weren't totally enthused with it. Bad opposiition made us look quite good, but I think we've got a lot more there and can be a lot better. I hope we see it in coming weeks :)

You recall incorrectly. One was about 54, the other just over 60.

Brent Guerra, Hawthorn, has been charged with a Level Four striking offence against Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Sydney, during the fourth quarter of the Round Nine match between Hawthorn and Sydney, played at the MCG on Saturday May 27, 2006.

His previous poor record means his penalty remains as a three-game sanction.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), high impact (three points), in play (no points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of seven activation points, which relates to a Level Four offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has a total of four matches suspended within the last three years, increasing his penalty by 30 per cent to 422.50 points and a four-game sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 316.88 points and a three-match sanction.

3 weeks for the sniper.
