View Full Version : New forwards coach

Given John Longmire is favoured to take over at St Kilda, who should the Swans be trying to lure as our new forwards coach?

Roos would no doubt like his old mate Alistair Lynch on board - but he is unproven and he as tactically adept as Horse?

It's a crucial decision as our forward structure has been critical to our success and everyone from Hall down seems to say Longmire is a genius.

Is Carey tied up at Collingwood?? Would Jason Ball be interested?

Good question. We should be following the Butterss system and approaching the St Kilda forward coach: "Anyone who has the credentials to coach our club . . . we owe it to our supporters and we owe it to ourselves to at least make a call."

I was thinking about this on the bus last night. Carey would be good but could we stop ourselves calling out "Carey is a W*nker" at the game?

Roosy will bring in his old fitzroy mate, Alister Lynch.
Roos loves working with friends.

Would it be better if he worked with his enemies?

Lynch would be a superb appointment but the article I read today suggested he's staying put in Brissie for the time being. They may well make do for now & use Lynch on a consulting basis. This of course assumes that Horse gets the nod from the Saints - still doubtful about that myself.

Careys gone from the pies, and dosent want a full time assistant role.IMO Lynch would be good.

Carey is a w**ker .... 40K+ people can't be wrong.
Carey won't be at Sydney.

What about Cressa??? If he can't get a gig in Melbourne, do you think he'd come back to Sydney?

.

Would it be better if we looked at all avaliable candidates, not just Roosy friends.

If Vossy retires we should do everything in our power to get him to Sydney.

He'll be the next supercoach and if Roos is already planning his retirement then let's stitch him up for the long term.

I was thinking yesterday...if Longmire takes on the job at the Saints, do you think he'd try and get some of our gun reserves to go with him?

Personally, I think Lynch would be an outstanding candidate nws he has the enormous handicap of being a mate with the coach.

Not for a forwards coach. Midfield coach more likely.

Well he could certainly coach how to milk a free in the forward line in the dying seconds of a game.

Think within the square - Paul Roos has the guy right under his wing now. They didnt put him in the Recruiting Dept for nothing.

Maxfield has the qualities needed for a coach, he all but thinks like Paul Roos now...

What makes him inappropriate then, he has managed to gain the respect of the players (not that that is hard thing to do) he will ultimately want a coaching role and what better place to start than with his best buddy. The guy is a natural ...These days it is all tactics and whatever, the old coaching styles have finished.

Also how many players do you know have been rescued with a job by a club after their playing careers have finished.

Maxfield will need to coach as he will find it hard to do anything else.

Absolutely...but as a forwards coach? No doubt he could do it...but you'd have to go:

1.Lynch
2. Voss

Getting someone from Brisbane is an excellent idea ->they know the crowd (Bris and Sydney similar markets) - and there's noone at Sydney with the experience of the three peat. Success breeds success.

3. Carey

The man was a champ.

4. Daylight

5. My U6's soccer coach. (The man knew how to score a goal)

I think an outside influence would be a better option....

Besides, bogans don't make good coaches......:)

Lynch has apparently ruled himself out of a coaching role for next year.

You obviously read the newspapers too. Nice to know there is at least one more intellectual on this board.

Still think the forwards coach will come from a person Roos trusts and knows well. The Swans have too many inside truths to share with an outsider.

Maxfield for my money with an outside chance to Cresswell. Maxfield needs the money and no other club would be prepared to hire him as an assistant coach. Sydney has to do it.

The issue for Maxfield is the question of whether he wants to move back to Sydney fulltime considering thats the reason he retired in the first place, so he could be closer to his kids.

Remember the work he is doing for us at the moment is only Part Time, is based out of Melbourne and is scout work focused. A large leap into coaching our midfield fulltime, let alone our forwards.

I fully agree with you and it is a problem for him but at some stage Maxfield has to look at the larger picture. He will obviously work out proper access for his kids with his wife or he will be one of the few who doesnt, there is no reason why the Family Court would not give him a good degree of access and that would mean he could relocate to Sydney.

He has a few years ahead of him and he cant work as a scout for the rest of his working life. His future is in football and Sydney under Paul Roos is the answer. he has natural coaching ability a point that would not be lost on Roos and Colless.

His wife will get over being @@@@@@ off unless she is in the too hard basket.

I'm not a great fan of his football career but great players dont necessarily make great coaches - have a look at the current crop and their assistants. Maxfield is capable and holds the players respect. Give him the job.

Maxfield doesn't strike me as an intellectual.

The things that made him a great player - don't necessarily translate as coachable qualities. Certainly not as a forwards coach. He has the respect of the players as a player...there's no quicker way to lose this respect not being up to the job. All this is irrelevant though - as you say his personal life will dictate descisions in this regard. (Would he coach in Melbourne?)
