The following statement was released today by AFL General Manager, Football Operations, Andrew Demetriou.

"In accordance with Rule 17 which relates to the enforcement of the National AFL Draft and Total Player Payments, the AFL Investigations Manager, Ken Wood, has formally charged the Carlton Football Club and Carlton Football Club player Matthew Allan with breaching provisions of the Total Player Payments.

"The breach relates to undisclosed football payments for services in season 2002 to Allan.

"Player Allan will also have to answer to myself, in my capacity as General Manager (Football Operations), under AFL Player Rule 1.6 for his conduct in not notifying the AFL of all Football Payments for 2002.

"In accordance with AFL Rules, the Carlton FC and player Allan have both been advised in writing of the charges this afternoon.

"The AFL has set a date for the Carlton FC and Allan to appear before the AFL Commission to formally respond to the charges.

"This hearing will occur on Monday February 17, at 11am at AFL House.

"The gathering of evidence for the matters relating to the charges, following a voluntary disclosure by the Carlton FC, was completed this week.

"In accordance with the rules, Mr Wood has concluded that there is appropriate evidence to now lay these charges," Mr Demetriou said.

Mr. Demetriou said Mr Wood had also referred the conduct of Player Agent David Allison to the AFLPA for its determination in the matter.

"It is not appropriate for the AFL to make any further comment at this point," Mr Demetriou said.
