I thought I'd get in really early, why not!

I'm feeling confident but cautious. Is it confirmed that Kennelly is out? Real bummer if he is, but it shouldn't make a difference.

Matthew Campbell, Lynchy and Liam Pickering.

I have to disagree with the Melbourne love thing though, I think they have been very complimentary of the Swans today and if compared to some of the commentary in the first half the year, it's been very positive.

Dominating possession and clearance in the midfield with Kirk and Malceski leading with 8 disposals. Warnock isn't a good match on Hall and if he stays on him, Hall could kick 7-10 goals by the end of this game.

Half-Time

Sydney 10.5 65
Melbourne 5.3 33

Won the quarter by only 2 points after a couple of turnovers resulted in goals to the Dees. However, the Swans have controlled the ball most of the time with the backline working hard to fend off Melbourne attack. Hall should have at least 6 goals instead of 4.3 and kicking for goals needs to be improved if we want a blowout as a result.

The difference between a top side like Geelong and us at the moment is the ability is to maintain top skill level and focus and thump an opposition like the Cats did to WC last night.

We are just in basic cruise control after the first 10 minutes and our skills have dropped as our intensity has too.

We need to go on and win these types of games by 15 goals.

Come on lads!

3 Quarter Time

Sydney 12.10 82
Melbourne 10.5 65

5.2 to 2.5 in the 3rd quarter has given the Dees a chance to steal it. Poor quarter from the Swans with missed opportunities and turnovers costing the margin dearly. Hall has been outstanding but should have 7-8 goals instead of 5.5, with the likes of Goodes, Malceski, Kennelly and McVeigh need to step up in the final quarter to prevent an upset.

31 hard at it
22nd June 2008, 04:11 PM

Our accuracy is an issue but there does not seem to be any smooth clearances from the centre to stop Melb's run.

Goal to Monty on the siren!!! :D :D :D

Sydney 17.12 114
Melbourne 11.8 74

Apart from that insipid 3rd quarter effort, Roosy gave them a good spraying to kick 5.2 in the final quarter and win comfortably by 40 points. Melbourne had the umps on their side with 25 free kicks vs. 16 for the Swans but that could be argued with a couple of 50m penalties going Sydney's way.

Great effort from Kirk racking up 27 disposals and Hall kicking 5.5 (should've been 7-8 easily), B1 and B2 had great games as did Mattner, Bird and ROK. Goodes was fairly ordinary only picking up 12 disposals but is bound to improve come a fortnight.

With Collingwood in a fortnight's time, it's important to play 4 quarters of footy and Roosy must get the match-ups right as they've had the better of us since 2006, including 3 woeful performances against them last year.

I will take 6 wins in a row at any time.
As Jude said amybe a few players thinking of the week off rather than nailing the game early.

The percentage win was ok in the end .. still gives Melb a chance to leave Weagles on the bottom.

Now to refocus to get everyone thinking right after the break.
Our record after breaks is not good enough.

Well done to Kirk and the half back line who kept Melb to a very low inside 50 count.

Both Bazza and Jude were critical of the performance today, given our great first quarter...and even Roosie was upset about the lack of intesity in quarters 2 and 3.... but a 40 point win is better than a 40 point loss..
Now we'll have to wait and see if the momentum is lost with the bye when we take on the phylth.

hammo
22nd June 2008, 04:58 PM
I think a combination of taking the opposition too lightly and playing in the quiet, relaxed confines of Canberra probably saw us 5-10% off our usual intensity.

I'm happy to take the 4 points even though it wasn't the best performance. Even Geelong struggled to put Melbourne away earlier this year.

That's 6 wins in a row, and now being ensconced in the top 4. Well done Swans!

I think we may have FINALLY found Bevans worst game this season!

Just gave away some silly frees and if i remember correctly a few ill directed passes.

The commentators know nothing. Why would most Sydney supporters want Collingwood to win? I want them as far behind us as possible!
Because it gives the Swans more chance of grabbing third.

Agreed. We didn't play particularly well for most of the game, but a 40 point victory and a solid fourth position is pretty pleasing. The real test starts from now though.

Wasn't the worst today by a long shot. Bevo was used as in a Mr Fix It Role

Exactly. And with Hawthorn showing some early signs of dropping back to the pack, getting up to 2nd isn't out of the question. It won't be easy but not impossible.

If we're serious contenders we should be hoping teams above us drop games, not looking at the teams behind us!

The advantage of playing top-8 teams in so many remaining games is the number of '8 point' games that result. Simply, if we are good enough, we will make top-2.

My theory is that after 5 very hard and well executed wins in a row that Sydney got very tired and it's not that surprising that we fell off after a bit of a lead.

The Dees are not that bad either. They pushed some very good teams to the brink this year. To be honest, last place is harsh given some of their very good efforts with young and inferior cattle.

YEP, the Dees have had a new injection of members (heading for 30,000) with big Jim taking over, they had nothing to lose to have a red hot go in ACT today, and they were still restricted to under 75 points at the final siren.
Let's settle a score or two with The Pies in two weeks at Olympic Stadium.:o

Strange game today, with both sides switched on at times but not at the same moment. Hall looks good. Henry had his best game with us so far. Mattner has been a great pick up. Jolly > White. MOL is a star.

Treading a very fine line indeed, (and of scrutinised over and over by 7).
IMHO less in it then when reported, but if he runs pass the ball trying to bump the player off balance only a matter of time.

Satch, he wasn't reported but.

He wasn't reported but yet again he ran through someone with a hip and shoulder to the head. Was soft and didn't deserve to be reported but he's done it a few times now and if he continues he will eventually be reported again and suspended.

We want to be either 2nd or 3rd postion, to avoid playing Geelong in the 1st game of the finals... I know i'm getting a head of myself as we have 9 games left but...

The Goodesy hit was soft as butter, nothing in it and he won't even be reported... knock on wood.

I think it would be better to play Geelong in week 1 of the finals- you would go in with no expectation of winning, and with the knowledge you wont meet them again till grand final day. Then a win would set you up for a great shot at the flag, and a loss would at least mean you dont have the problem of meeting them unless you are good enough to get to the decider.
But perhaps the only chance of beating them in September is if you meet them in a prelim final and get them up lots of pressure. I dont think it will matter who we play 1st- would be nice to finish in top two and get a home final week 1 but I think making the 4 is far more important then where you finish in the 4.

It's a huge advantage to play the preliminary final at home so your best chance at doing that is by finishing top 2 where you have to opportunity to play first up at home.

Exactly!! And since when is winning by 40 points to any team a disappointment? I think that Geelong's thrashing of WC made any other win look close.

had nothing really to gain today and everything to lose, we did the job, nothing impressive, dull as dishwater match, even when it got to 11 i doubted we would actually let them win.

wouldnt drop anyone based on todays game really, no one was that good but its was a nothing game, that did nothing but give us a bit of a break on teams below

Again, another poorly executed/timed bump, not even going for the ball.
I wouldn't be surprised if he actually goes this week, as soft as it was.

As lobster said, strange game, ups and downs for both teams.

Not too many real stand outs, but a few who struggled to get into the game.
I think we were just the better of the fumbling teams, and the Dees lacked a match winning forward or 2, other wise we could've been in trouble late in the game.

Given all the baying for his blood by the media and so called experts, and feral opposition supporters, there should be no way that he be reported or the incident given a passing glance. Even the biased commentators today didn't go on with it and so they shouldn't have either.

I saw him being moved out of the way a few times.

His versatility was underlined by the fact he played on and effectively shut down the talls and smalls - Bruce, who he heavied out of the game in the first quarter, Green and Davey . As well as a few neville's i can't be arsed looking up.

I don't think he said he hates him, I think we all agree that Goodes is taking some unnecessary risks with the high contact, and will be suspended if he keeps doing it. he now has points and will not get a reprimand again.
