good - we never play well when we're expected to

i think at this point i'd just like to see an improvement on the last few weeks which have been shocking ... we're not going to win any games playing like we have so running in to some form now would be good ...

Bad new on the umps we have one Mac and Chamberlain!!

If the White "in" is correct, we'll go in with

White
Brabazon
Jack
Bird
Vez
Brennan
Moore
Grundy
Mattner

all as changes from the core team that saw us to two GFs. That's half a starting line-up! And of those, only Mattner had much experience beforehand. The Swans truly are the cygnets at the moment.

Gee, I hope O'Keefe has his third blinder in a row. If the Dogs manage to shut him down things could get very ugly indeed.

Quarter Time

Swans 5.3. 33
Bulldogs 3.2. 20

McVeigh's been BOG so far with Murphy very dangerous for the Bulldogs. The youngsters Bird, Jack and Brennan in particular are looking very impressive today.

Speaking of Bird, at the end of the day in a way I feel sorry for the guy, he's tried his heart out this season when he plays and was one of the favs to get a Rising Star nomination but hasn't done so. I've got a feeling he'll go through the season without getting one. :(

Some Stats so far:

Free Kick Count: Swans 8 Bulldogs 5
Hit Outs: Swans 13 Bulldogs 8

Leading Possession takers:

McVeigh - 8
ROK, LRT, Bird - 7
Vesz, Jack - 6
Cross, Gilbee, Hahn - 6 (Bulldogs)

3rd August 2008, 02:46 PM
Great start by Sydney in the first ten minutes. Looked really confident taking the ball down the centre and kicking for goal or finding targets. However, started to pick up some of their bad habits again as the quarter progressed.

Quarter Time

Sydney 5.3 33
Western Bulldogs 3.2 20

A great start by the Swans kicking 4 goals in the first 7 minutes but it's been fairly even throughout the quarter. Swans are finally playing attacking footy and should be further in front if Richards didn't kick a poster. McVeigh clearly the best in the quarter with 8 disposals and 2 goals.

Swans are winning the free kick count and dominated possession (96 vs. 74).

Western Bulldogs 11.4 70

A disgraceful quarter by the Swans with the Dogs scoring 8.2 compared to 1.3, the backline was shot to pieces after multiple turnovers became goals to the Bulldogs. Great to see Hall kick a goal right before the siren but the Bulldogs have clear momentum.

Nico
3rd August 2008, 03:30 PM
We failed in contested footy that quarter like we did last week. When the ball hit the ground it was often 4 on 1 with our blokes zoning back whether in the back or forward half rather than putting their bodies on the line.

I am staggered with the Dogs flooding back that we persist in going the short pass. White was a prime example. They just cut it off every time. Kick it over the flood and put the pressure on their last line. Pretty simple I would have thought. Coming out of our forward line they had so many loose players and it looked like we were struggling for fitness. Unaccountable garbage that quarter and it loses the game.

Nice to see Brabazon get a bit of it and was one of the few finding space.

Brennan was OK in 1st Q but needs to keep moving.

Grundy can't turn, backman only forever for mine.

1st Q we get the ball out of the centre, in the 2nd Q our ruckmen tapped it to their men in situations where a good belt forward would have been better.

We just had too many unaccountable players who disappeared under pressure. Don't blame the kids for that.

Nico
3rd August 2008, 03:31 PM

Yes and refuses to play in front. Frawley says he is the only one moving on the forward line then lets him off the hook when he drops a sitter. Lucky it wasn't a bucket of crap Barry.

But just LOOK at the power and influence that is missing and has been one way or another for several weeks....Hall has been no positive influence since game one this year. Unfortunate for Brabazon. Borderline Boyd stole it from his hands (hence 50m penalty). Not good play by J Bolton to call for it when Boyd was in the way.

The umpire should never have called play on. The player was on Brabazon's back, not within 5 metres. He should have been called away as happens in every other case.

Just thought you might be interested in a list of fist half failures from this season. Here are 9 games....MORE THAN HALF THE SEASON, in which we have been APPALLING to half time. In just 1 out of these nine games we got our @@@@ together and scraped our way to a win (Eagles). That can't happen against the Bulldogs unless EVERYTHING changes, and there's no reason on earth to think that that is at all possible.

Bulldogs 6.6 (11.4)
Adelaide 4.8 (8.7)
Hawthorn 4.6 (9.9)
Collingwood 1.5 (5.7)
Eagles 2.7 (8.7)
Bulldogs 6.5 (10.2)
North 4.7 (3.7)
Geelong 6.7 (7.8)
Saints 4.6 (4.6)

We were also shocking against Carlton...but at least we scored 8 goals and only trailed by 2.

So that's 37 goals and 56 behinds in 9 games, or roughly 4.6 to half time for more than half of ALL the games we have played this season.

There is no way any other team has even had a handful of first halves like this, let alone a team supposedly contending.

Bugger recruiting for skill or courage...how about recruiting for brains. I just can't stand these brain snaps which COMPLETELY RUIN a team's momentum (Richards into the post from 3 metres after playing on!!!) not to mention the stupid free kicks, the handballs to an opponent to goal, it just goes on and on and on (LIKE ME!!!! :D :D)

BTW anyone know of a webstream of the game?

Cheers

We are going to get beaten anyway so I reckon Roos should tell them just go for it go out and enjoy and play attacking football take them on and see what happens. He won't and they won't but it would be better than watching them die this way.

But we played attacking footy in the 1st Q. We just went back into our shell and we refuse to play or create contested footy, turn it over by over possessing and calling for the footy at the wrong time, and we get slaughtered on the scoreboard for it.

Three Quarter Time

Western Bulldogs 13.7 85
Sydney 9.11 65

A somewhat better quarter by the Swans but again goalkicking has been ordinary (3.5) with both sides having 20 shots on goal. Great first goal by Veszpremi, who has played well on debut.

Momentum has shifted slightly towards the Swans, accurate goalkicking and directing the play in the 4th quarter can get us over the line and win in a thriller.

Ves should have had a shot himself. Why waste time kicking to Hall whose accuracy is about 20% and falling. His set shot work is abysmal. Better off going to a contest at FF.
