Now that the home-and-away season is finished, here are some interesting statistics on attendances at our games.

Across all grounds in all states, the average crowd at games involving the Swans was 30,140. This figure was depressed by the two games we played at Manuka Oval - if you remove those from the equation, the average attendance at games involving us was 31,904.

We played at the SCG seven times for an average attendance of 25,401. We played at Homebush four times for an average attendance of 45,824. The only other venue we played at more than once was the Dome, where we played four times for an average attendance of 37,244.

You can claim the Homebush attendances are greater because that's where our "blockbusters" are played. However, that doesn't explain why 34,904 turned up for the Essendon game at Homebush, way over the average attendance for the SCG, and over 5,000 more than the best attended game at the SCG (which was 29,018 for Round 7 against the Bulldogs).

Why do more thousands more people consistently make the effort to attend our games at Homebush? The capacity of the SCG at the moment is about 34,000 - why don't we fill it more often?

As a non-Sydney sider the answer is easy. Homebush is far easier to get to and home from than the SCG. The facilities are much better as well.

Probably the sale of the 3-match pass for people that aren't members to go to the ANZ games. I think all NSW Aus-kick kids get one free pass to any of the ANZ games as well.

3 match passes and the fact that casual fans can make a decision on the day to go really give Homebush the edge.

Swans games at the SCG have a reputation of being sold out and impossible to get tickets to. The Swans have to start getting the message out there that you can rock up on the day and get a ticket.

Promotion of Swans home games has been terrible this season. The Swans marketing department needs a good kick up the rear end. They appear to care far more about that bloody raffle than they do about attracting more people to attend our home games. I didnt see one single ad for the game against Brisbane (then again, I dont watch much commercial TV) but saw plenty of ads on Foxtel for the raffle.

They also really do need to do something about the impression that people seem to have that you cant walk up to the SCG and buy tickets to games on match day, especially with capacity increasing considerably at the SCG next season.

The 3 match pass has been very successful for games at Homebush.

Might have something to do with the Barry Hall Hall advertisements being canned after the incident, not sure how successful that game was or maybe the fact more people turn when Hall plays, but we've got around the same numbers whether he plays or not so i personally am not sure.

Why do more thousands more people consistently make the effort to attend our games at Homebush?

Because the vast majority of Sydney's population is in the West. Just like the VFL/AFL needed to grow outside of Victoria, we need to grow outside of our heartland (East/LNS).
