View Full Version : What did you get right/ wrong?

This season
1.Got the Swans missing the finals right .I made the call after the Doggies disaster but amazingly they still could have made them well after this if they hadn't made some terrible turnovers and if the umpires had given us an even break.
2. Got it right moving Jesse to the forwards and bringing in Pyke or Currie as our second ruckman.this worked fabulously well and I always thought we should be exploiting the luxury of extra height that we have.
3. Got Grundy totally wrong! Wrote him off as a dud backman who should be in the forwards! WRONG!
4. Got Hall wrong. Never thought he would brain fade so quickly or that the Club would drop him! Big surprise for me.
5.Things which could still go either ways are

Barlow..i don't think he has got it... could be wrong and hope I am.
Moore..needed that stint in the 2's but still makes critical mistakes
Pyke..I am calling "Its time" time he kicked a ball, marked and tackled.
C. OBrien ..champion over worked and starting to brittle up
Roos plan...it's changed or has it? why can the same sides always rip us apart?

How did the rest of you call 2009 ? What mistakes or clangers did you make and what did you get right?

Got our position roughly right (between 8th and 13th, and with the way the season panned out, a win or loss either way would have almost taken us anywhere between those positions).

Got Grundy wrong: I too thought he was being wasted in the backline. I did, however, rate him overall, which is more than a lot of people can say.

I thought Bird would have another good but unremarkable year due to fitness issues (i.e. time on ground). Got that one right. I reckon, so long as his shoulder isn't too bad (does anybody have any details on that?), with another good preseason under him he should be right to start playing a bigger role in the guts.

Thought Jack would be played in a more attacking role this year. Got that one wrong, but only sort of. He was freed up a bit, but not quite to the extent I was expecting.

Right: Ablett needs DNA testing and the "ex"-junkie is still a tool.

;)

Right:

- Grundy. He's a player but I thought as a forward so I got the latter part wrong.

Wrong:

- Where we'd finish. Thought we'd be playing in an EF again.
- Schmidt to cement his spot in the 22. Injuries meant that he didn't get the chance.

Right - Cuz would have added some dynamism to our midfield

Wrong - Swans would make the 8

Right : Said we would finish 13th, pretty close.
Jesse White will become a star.
Dan O Keefe wont play a game.
Mike Pyke is a dud.
LRT is a footballer.
Nick Malceski will struggle to make any impact.

Wrong : Heath Grundy : by a country mile.
Ryan OKeefe : Fantastic season, now glad he stayed
Rhyce Shaw : Still hate the look of him, though great year.
John Longmire : Didnt think he would be the man.

So cruel but unfortunately true!

Right - the new membership structure was a major stuff up (in Sydney).

Wrong-We'd be in the bottom 4. Hannebury wouldn't play senior Football.

Right-We wouldn't make the finals. This would be Hall's last year with Sydney.

Primmy
2nd September 2009, 09:28 PM
Right:
Barlow is a work in progress,
White would one day be a gun,
O'Keefe is not as bad as painted and would always do his utmost good.
Kirky has a lovely smile.
BBB's wiring was a worry
Membership and Marketing was getting it wrong, and something was going to collapse.
Tadhg would go home
We don't have enough legs.
Roos would consider retirement
We need a couple more indig on deck to provide unpredictability

Wrong:
MOD wouldn't get a game.
Smiffy may have to wait another year.
LRT was only just (sooo happy I was stuff all with that one)
Ves would run riot
Rhyce was unreliable
Pyke wouldn't get a game until 2011
Mal was a winner
MickyO couldn't kick over 40 metres.

Highly debatable that all of these will be right long-term.

We need a couple more indig on deck to provide unpredictability

I am sorry if I am being precious, but this statement doesn't sit well with me.
It is stereotyping a race.
You don't have to be 'indig' to be unpredictable, just remember our recently retired champ. Leapin'.
And being 'indig' doesn't mean you are unpredictable, see our no.37.
I am guessing that you mean we need a couple of quick guys with flair. That could be Jack, Veszpremi and even Monty if he gets fit again. Again these are not 'indig' players.

I am talking about the unadulterated flair that Mick & Adam have, that Robbie, Troy, Derek had/have. That Liam, has in buckets. Most of the indig blokes have a degree of flair that cannot be taught. Its nothing to do with stereotyping - in the world of AFL its a fact. And I would love to see guys from Sydney and/or NSW being included in the Swans lineup. I am not saying Jack, Ves or Monty cannot be Adam or Mick, I am saying it would be great to see a bigger mix in our lineup.

Right:

- Bevan would be dropped
- We would miss the finals
- MOL, Barry and Crouch would call it a day
- Crouch would beat Aker one last time

Wrong:

- Thought Barlow would be a key part of the side
- Did not expect White to become a forward target
- Didn't think Pyke would play
- Expected Malceski to be back to his best

Wrong: All my postings on RWO

Thats long term Plugger, question asked was what you got right this year.

For what its worth though, With Pyke & Mal.
Pyke will be a dud next year, Mal hate saying it think he might be trade bait.

Bloody Hell
3rd September 2009, 05:23 PM
Right

Grundy - Though I thought he would be the 3rd forward. Can't have hands like his and rot in the two's.

Wrong

Bevan - Thought he would be dropped, but didn't think he'd be back. Showed a bit in the last couple of games.

"Dud" suggests the player in question will never be any good. You can be a poor player with development potential, or you could be a dud with no potential. So Paul Chambers was a dud, while McVeigh wasn't, despite appearing to be early on.

You still may be right about Pyke, but it's far too early to tell yet.

Right:
Crouchy, Leo and Mickey to retire
White to feature as a forward
Pyke to get game time
Bird and Veszpremi to shine
Wrong:
Baz to proceed to a glorious final season
Jude to fade
Roos to continue keeping his cool despite all provocation
We would scrape into the eight

Somebody, can't remember who, picked Hanneberry very very early as a star who could play . They got that soo right but did anyone pick him to play this year and get so many games?

Picked him very early in practice. And he kept shining in Ressies, which was almost embarrassing in comparison to some 3rd year players. But, are you kidding! I didn't think his mum would allow such a thing! And to be so good. Family must have just about burst a poofle valve with pride. I sure was. But no way did I think he would get a single gig this year, so cannot claim a Right.

RIGHT
Knew Leo would retire, expected MOL and Crouch to retire.

WRONG
The Swans to make the finals, Buchy and Melcho to be major contributors, Murphy to get a few games.

IN-BETWEEN
Predicted Barlow would return to seniors. Didn't predict he'd be half-crap, half-good.
