Apologies for the thread title!

Emma Quayle is not noted for her hyperbole but in her drafting article today in The Age in Melbourne, she confirmed that we offered Richmond our pick 6 and 14 for their pick 3.

Just goes to show you how desperate we are for Dustin Martin as we didn't offer the same deal to Freo at pick 4.

Damn, why did Martin have such a good draft camp. Explosive pace, great skills and is ready to play senior football in 2010.

Damn, damn, damn he was our target pick at 6 all along and if the above deal was true it proves it.

Wasn't that a disappointing article. Fairfax journalist are too interested in the feeling of stuff rather than the facts. It makes for boring journalism

Especially when there are some probably really interesting things to write about. They have a complete lack of insight

Greg Baum's article about loyalty was 15 years out of date, and wouldn't the interesting article have been about the business pressures on someone like Michael Voss given GC17

Emma quayle could have written a really interesting article about the advantages of the top 14 players, and the trade off for need vs player as well as clubs foxing, keeping their cards close to their chest

Isn't the key point that the top 6 are unlikely to be as they are now because of all the trade-offs?

Isn't Morabito to Fremantle a measure of pragmatism? Would have made the draft process far more interesting

Why is Dustin Fletcher suddenly prized at No. 3?

Looks like the first 5 picks are set in stone and we'll shape the rest of the first round with our pick at 6.

Seems like Freo will take the WA boy Morabito at 4 and North will overlook Butcher and go with Cunnington at 5.

It is just as possible - completely theorising here - that it is Morabito the Swans were keen on. They might have been trying to sell the deal to Richmond along the lines of:

"If we take Morabito with 3, Freo's next choice is likely to be Butcher. We think North have their eye on Cunnington so there's a decent chance that Martin would slip down to you at 6 in any case."

On the otherhand, they wouldn't go to Freo and tell them the reason they wanted their pick was to choose the very player everyone seems to think Freo have set their minds on.

Everyone seems to think the top parts of drafts are set in stone a month or more out from the draft but many years there is a late bolter that throws things out of the prescribed order. Last year it was Hill at 3. In 2006 Pendlebury at 5.

Wouldn't it be fanstastic if Melbourne threw everyone into a spin early by picking, say, Morabito and Martin with their picks?!!

Well this indicates that we are very keen on a midfielder with our first pick. One or two more quality young mids in this draft would be the last piece of the puzzle as far as our future midfield is concerned.

I would love for Melbourne to do something other than Scully and Trengove. In particular, I'd love for them to go for Butcher. That would presumably leave Richmond with the option of either Scully or Trengove, and Martin, and if this were to happen then there's probably a decent chance they'd go for Scully or Trengove. Freo seem certain to take Morabito, leaving North as the only team in the way of Martin falling to Sydney. If they are as keen on Cunnington as some have suggested, they may go that option, leaving Sydney to pick Martin.

It's unlikely to happen, but it seems like the only realistic way we could get Martin.
