NEAFL Round 7
Sydney Swans Reserves v Brisbane Lions Reserves
Sunday 5th May 2013 9.30am
Sydney Cricket Ground

The highly anticipated clash between two unbeaten sides from each conference has unfortunately been scheduled for the soporific start time of 9.30am. The Lions are also the reigning NEAFL premiers, defeating Queanbeyan for the title in 2012. Under new coach Leigh Harding, they have started the season in brilliant form, smashing their archrivals the Suns Reserves twice in the past 3 weeks.

The Swans had a bye last week to coincide with the historic Wellington trip by the seniors, and prior to that have also been in good form, posting 3 consecutive comfortable triumphs after their 1st round thriller against the Giants.

With no listed players restrictions for either side, we should witness some good football being played by these fringe players desperate to break into their respective senior sides. The 2 sides have fought some entertaining battles since the introduction of the NEAFL. The Swans have emerged victorious in 4 of the 5 battles but the Lions' only win was at the SCG last year.

Past Meetings
2012
R8 Brisbane Reserves 11.20 (86) defeated by Reserves 18.12 (120) @Yeronga

The Reserves travelled to Brisbane to upset the Lions who aided the Swans by being incredibly wasteful in front of goal. The Swans stormed to a 6 goal lead at quarter time and maintained a 4 goal lead at the main break and despite a couple of Lions surges in the 2nd half, confidently withstood the fusillade of shots from Brisbane to win quite comfortably. Mitch Morton continued his goal glut by bagging 8 to complement his 10 the previous week. Captain Jarred Moore dominated the stoppages yet again aided by the taps of big Canuck Mike Pyke

Goals: Morton 8 Walsh 2, Davis, Thurgarland, Spangher, Cunningham, Moody, Bosschieter, Moore, Meredith
Best: Moore, Pyke, Walsh, Cunningham, Biggs, Heath

R16 Reserves 16.7 (103) defeated by Brisbane Reserves 17.20 (122) @ Sydney Cricket Ground

The Swans for a variety of reasons had plenty of regulars missing and a very strong Lions outfit took advantage of their absence to record a strong away win. Truth be told, if they had converted a higher number of their set shots, the game would have been over early in the 2nd half. Tommy Walsh stood up in the absence of his forward line teammates to take strong grabs, and finished with a deserved 3 goals. Brett Meredith provided plenty of run and dash from the half back line while Trent Dennis-Lane continued to impress onlookers in his new hybrid midfield-forward role.

Goals: Broome 3, Parker 3, Dennis-Lane 3, Walsh 3, Moore, Krochmal, Mitchell, Lamb
Best: Walsh, Meredith, Dennis-Lane, Heath, Plug, Parker

R21 Brisbane Reserves 13.8 (86) defeated by Reserves 17.15 (117) @ Yeronga

The Reserves coped well without leading goalkicker Mitch Morton with his replacement Trent Dennis-Lane kicking 5 goals and the two talls Matt Spangher and Tommy Walsh 3 each. It was the impressive use of the ball by Andrejs Everitt that saw him named best on ground alongside midfield general Jarred Moore. Campbell Heath yet again led the defence superbly, blanketing the Lions tall forwards.

Goals: Dennis-Lane 5, Spangher 3, Walsh 3, McNeil 2, Everitt 2, Cunningham Gordon
Best: Everitt, Moore, Heath, McNeil, White

Team List
Listed players
#|Name|Games|Goals|Votes|Notes
1|Tim MEMBREY|3|9|0|Presenting well on leads and will be fresh after a 2 week break.
6|Tom MITCHELL|3|1|0|Hasn't dominated the possession tally as he did last year but will have to step up in Lamb's absence.
10|Mitch MORTON|3|18|8|Very unlucky to only receive half a game of football as reward for his excellent reserves form, will be keen to do well against tough opposition here. His last reserves start netted him 10 goals and almost as many score assists.
13|Andrejs EVERITT|2|6|6|Half a reserves game here, 3 quarters of the seniors there, the Swans management of him has been questionable. Expect time to be split in the midfield and the forward line
17|Tommy WALSH|3|12|5|Has tended to play in defence when there is a gorilla to mark and Jordan Lisle's presence could mean he moves to defence despite kicking 12 goals in the last 2 games.
18|Jesse WHITE|4|3|8|Billy Longer's promotion last week means that White will be battling a ruckman who is very similar in style to himself. Sam Michael is not a natural ruck but a very athletic tall who has a good leap.
22|Dean TOWERS|4|3|0|A quietish game against the Eagles was a disappointing follow up to his improved showing in the Hawks game.
23|Jordan LOCKYER|4|1|0|Has been employed as a wingman in the past 2 matches but hasn't fully exploited the uncontested nature of this position.
27|Daniel ROBINSON|4|4|3|Important part of the inside midfield rotation but also knows how to bob up for a goal or two.
28|Matthew DICK|3|0|0|Hasn't seen much game time and was omitted last week, will be assigned to mark one of Brisbane's tall forwards
31|Harrison MARSH|3|3|0|Spent signifcant minutes as the side's tagger, would be a huge task if he were to mark Simon Black.
33|Brandon JACK|4|6|0|5 scoring shots, 4 score assists and 8 inside 50s against the Eagles highlight the scoreboard impact he is having but his defensive work has just been as impressive.
36|Alex BROWN|4|2|8|Acting captain settled in a key defensive post after being used all over the ground earlier in the season. BOG last game.
42|Xavier RICHARDS|3|0|0|Had a bit of freedom against the Eagles and moved up the ground at times to be involved there but will have his hands full this week.
44|Jake LLOYD|4|4|8|More opportunities in the inside midfield this week but is as adept playing in an outside role. 30+ touches in each of the last 2 games
46|Shane BIGGS|4|0|0|Took some impressive contested marks in defence and is a crucial link man.

Changes
In: Membrey (???), Morton (seniors) Dick (???), Marsh (???)
Out: Lamb (seniors), Bird (seniors)

Although the reserves won their last match against the Eagles quite comfortably, the midfield as a collective unit did not have it their own way with Amon Buchanan and Marc Dragicevic just as prominent for the Eagles as Bird, Lloyd and Lamb were for the Swans. With the promotion of Bird and Lamb to the seniors, a lot will depend on their replacements' output against a tough looking Lions midfield including Brownlow medalist Simon Black.

Defence is also another worry area with a new look combination with the likes of Richards, Brown, Dick, Lockyer and Biggs still trying to work each other's games out. Taking the Eagles game again as an example, the Hills scored 13 goals from a limited number of forward 50 entries.

Kicking goals hasn't been an issue though and even if Walsh is sacrificed to the backline, the inclusion of Morton will more than compensate.

Head was impressive last game with 4 goals and 9 marks and while Perris didn't get a lot of the ball he showed composure and skills when he did. Weir usually plays as a tall-ish defender.

An imposing looking side with Simon Black, Matt Maguire, Brent Staker and Andrew Raines all having 100+ AFL games experience. Add to that impressive youngsters Sam Docherty, Nick Hayes and Jordan Bourke as well as fringe players Jack Crisp, Todd Banfield and Jesse O'Brien and the magnitude of the Swans' task becomes clearer.

Jordan Lisle has been in superb goalkicking form, kicking 24 of them in the 5 matches, including a haul of 8 last week against the Suns Reserves. Alex Brown has been doing well in a key defensive post but he lacks the height to go with the 196cm Lisle and that job may well fall to Walsh. In any case, the Lions have plenty of height to throw around with the likes of McKeever, Staker, Bourke and Karnezis able to play forward as well so Brown and his fellow defenders Richards and Dick will need to work well as a unit to help each other out.

It will also be interesting to see how Crouch tackles Simon Black, whether to employ a full time tagger in Marsh or to pit our best midfielder in Tom Mitchell against him. Other dangermen in the midfield include Hayes who has been a great accumulator of the ball and Newell who has added an offensive side to his customary run with role. The dangerous run and carry of Sam Docherty from half back must also be curbed and Brandon Jack may well be the man for the job given his excellent tackling record.

The Lions are somewhat weakened by the unavailability of some of their Academy players due to the Queensland U18s side playing a practice match.

Good luck to whoever ends up playing on Simon Black! :D

Absolute champion player, he swapped jumpers with Kirky after their last match against each other in 2010, could be the last time we see him play on the SCG. Might be a good reason to get to the game early, for anyone considering it (as well as seeing our up-and-coming players of course!)

Thanks once again ugg. You have a mean typing style - back in the day I would have been very envious of your ability to do this sort of layout!!!

Made a mental note that Alex Brown also went on the bike trip to Myanmar with Jed Lamb (and the ressies coach come to think of it). Jed has said that his improvement came from the 500K bicycling and mental toughness required, so I am assuming that is probably also a reason why Alex has also risen up the ranks in leadership in particular this year. After having to deal with a hip injury for the first half of last season, it seemed to me to be a big jump. I am enjoying the kid's progress.

It will also be interesting to see how Crouch tackles Simon Black .

Maybe he should don a guernsey himself.

Might be good to give Mitchell first crack, then perhaps Lloyd or Robinson.

It would be a priceless learning experience for them.

I'm really looking forward to getting there early to see this match. There's a lot of quality in that Lions side so it'll be good to see how our boys stand up. I'll be trying to get there as close to ball up as possible....

Thanks for the great preview as always Ugg

Awful quarter let us never speak of it againI think the heat was getting to the kids and they were running out of puff. It was a lousy quarter though. I think we had 3 senior players and they had 8. That is a telling statistic. Also there were a lot of cramps in amongst the cignets, so I am not so veeerrrrrrry disappointed.

X played his heart out, and its a joy to watch, but he is no gorilla.
BJ is a smart kid, and the others trust him.
Mitch had a Big Day Out. MUST be pushing for selection, but at who's expense?
Towers did some good stuff, but he patchy
Perris had a good game, did some very fancy work at times.
Dick is getting better.
Everitt, is so like his brother. Looks lazy but I don't think he is. He chooses his battles.
B ig shoutout to Jesse. He is such a team player, I don't think he is over burdened with personal ego, he is worthy of our respect.

I would like to hear ugg's appraisal before I say any more. But I have to say I think Bigg's and Lockyer could either be extremely good, or plateaux.

Up until the final quarter it was a terrific contest and a great game to watch. Even the final quarter isn't as bad as the scoreboard suggests - the Swans did kick 8 behinds (albeit many of them long speculative shots) which shows they didn't completely stop to a standstill. They were just overrun in the end when the Lions upped the tempo at the start of the final quarter. I was expecting it to happen a bit sooner, so in many ways I was pleased that the younger Swans outfit matched it with the Lions for as long as they did.

As with most weeks, it was hard to find many stand-outs because they all played their bit. Mitch was impressive up forward and Jesse was excellent in the ruck too.

Perris didn't get a whole heap of ball but he certainly showed a few signs of quick thinking and some class. It's a shame he's not a bit bigger, and he's probably not going to grow much more at age 18. But I saw him walking alongside Jake Lloyd at one of the breaks and he's just about the same height. Lloyd is listed at 180cm, I think, so I'd guess Perris is around 178cm or so - which is Kieran Jack height and definitely big enough to make it if he's good enough.

I love the way X dashes with the ball, sometimes taking off almost before he's hit the ground after taking a mark. He's a fair bit quicker than Ted I reckon.

Dick did a few really nice things and looks like he's bulking up quite nicely. I am not sure what role he might play at senior level, if he gets there.

Towers flashed in and out of the game but took some nice overhead marks and took the game on with his pace a few times.

Lloyd and Robinson were very busy all afternoon - each has a good combination of run-all-day attitude with a healthy dose of skill.

Mitchell got to play on Black for much of the game. It was hard to see who had the best of things but what a great opportunity for him to have this experience at NEAFL level.

Everitt did what Everitt normally does - ie impress with flashes that show his great athleticism without really dominating.

Won't have time to write the full report until mid week. Short thoughts

Morton played 3 quarters and then withdrawn. With toppie tall forward Tom Head not sighted since the first quarter (injured?), Walsh was shifted forward to provide a focal point but the shift from his excellent work in defence unsettled our backline and when the Lions had the first few clearances of the last quarter, the remaining defenders struggled to cover. When Richards went off (looked like cramp) Walsh was shifted back onto Lisle but the damage had been done. Lions ran much harder than us in the last quarter, in particular Karnezis and Banfield left plenty of Swans trailing in their wake with their runs through the middle of the ground.
Morton had 5 very good goals against a quality opponent in Harwood. Tackling was just as impressive. Not sure what the issues are with him not being in the seniors, but it surely isn't form and/or workrate.
Jesse had less hitouts (but still some very good taps) but many more possessions than in the past 2 weeks. Wish he'd lower his eyes with some of his kicks but I sense he isn't comfortable with his ability to evade would-be tacklers.
Mitchell on Black was intriguing to watch. Black misplaced some kicks early on but was influential in their comeback. He's still a very classy player, the extra time he seemed to have with the ball and good decision making made him stand out from the rest of the players on both sides.
Everitt as he usually does lined up in the midfield, made some good plays and worked hard up and down the ground.
Towers as mentioned already took some strong grabs playing as a forward, but still very much a peripheral figure in the team.
Membrey did his best work further up the ground but couldn't impact the scoreboard. Sprayed his only set shot from a Saad-esque length run up
Biggs and Lockyer probably had their best games of the year, both in defence, without being standouts. Biggs in particular had plenty of handball receives running from defence but still needs work on his tackling and defensive aspects of his game.
Brown again utilised at both ends of the ground, started well but to be honest looked a little flustered in the last when the ball was flying into our defensive 50 repeatedly and made some poor decisions that cost us a few goals.
Richards had a purple patch against McKeever in the second quarter, comprehensively beat him in 3 contests in a short space of time.
Marsh had some time on Black as well in a run with role. Good hands, took a strong mark in the 2nd quarter as well as setting up Everitt for his aforementioned long goal.

I thought our tackling was pretty ordinary at crucial points in the game and too many tackles didn't stick in the main. Black started most of their centre square work in the last. They also put all their experienced campaigners in there at the same time and blitzed us. Our backline went to pieces when Xavier left the ground. He was sensational at FB until injured. I think he is going to be better than Ted by the way. He moves so well and he is fast. He also seems to have an inbuilt radar in the question of Mark or Punch.

I thought Biggs was very good. Dick showed a bit and not seeing a great deal of him yet I would still like to see more. I agree with Ugg, shifting Tommy Walsh stuffed up our backline. Bad coaching move Crouchy. In the last when Black was carving us up I also thought there was no move to contain him which would have been a good lesson for a potential tagger. Brandon Jack maybe or Towers.

Brandon Jack throws himself in with abandon just like his brother. Mitchell was very good, shows class and knows just where to be at the right time. Mitch is very unlucky as I think he would get a game in any AFL side at the moment.

Robbo is really interesting as is Lloydy, they both have heaps of talent, I would like them to sometimes lift the eyes a bit more as some of the delivery was a bit poor, directly to opposition players.

Ugg I got the feeling in the last Brown was getting frustrated because our mids were just letting the ball come out of the centre square too easily and the backs were under the pump. it didn't help that Brisvegas put all the talls in the forward line knowing Richards was off the ground.

I've tweeted the Giants asking why this game is not being played as a curtain raiser to the Crows game. Strange decision given a handful of Swans fans may have taken the opportunity to attend for the ressies and stayed on for the main game.

I didn't even realise the Giants seniors were playing on the same day. It is a really strange decision given they did play one Swans Reserves v Giants Reserves at Skoda last year, and I did indeed stay for the main game which turned out to be the win over Port (I like to think I played my part in it).

Looking at their reserves draw, only one game is scheduled for Skoda, when they take on the Suns Reserves. And guess who they are playing in the main game? That's right Port Adelaide again.

I'm doing the trifecta on the weekend, Cats/Bombers Fri night, Swans/Hawks Sat night and flying home early for the Giants/Crows game on Sun afternoon. Taking in a 6am flight to get to Blacktown on Sun morning for the quaddie is just taking it a bit far.....

Micky O, LRT, Crouchie and Tadhg have played ressies. And if my memory isn't playing tricks on me I think Leo Barry has as well

I think if Plugger makes another comeback, at least one game in the twos would be wise.

Yeah and who's going to tell him?

I know exactly what you mean Prims, but remember Voss is their coach and showing respect to their major seniors (great name for them btw) has not proven to be his strong suite.

Very true.. Bradshaw, Power..

Parks - hard to think that plugger is scarier than Luke's dad.

A highlight of the game on Sunday was an esteemed member of RWO over the fence in a verbal stoush with Matt Maguire. Not sure what was said, but it was just after Maguire was outmarked by topup #60. It's not often a player responds but Maguire got so involved in conversation he was barely interested in standing the mark.

Come on ORB, what did you say to upset him so much???

Perhaps a reminder of his soft effort in the 05 PF?

Yeah I know J, but can you think of any of our major seniors playing ressies? Ever? Not the junior seniors, I mean Kell, Plugger, Cressa, Peb, Kirky, BBB, et al. Its just not right.

I'm sorry Prim but I don't agree. If a player has spent an extensive period out or has had a limited preparation then they need to get match fitness in the Twos. The reason for this is simple, at the lower level the player is putting less stress on their body and can work themselves back to match fitness the longer a game goes on. Black was not starring in the first but by the last he was firing. If he came directly into the Seniors there is a chance at the high stress level of AFL footy he could re-injure himself or at least strain something else. His body may not be ready for AFL footy either and then he becomes a burden on the team who will be carrying him.

Match Report

The Lions were the favourites coming into this game, in great form after pounding the Suns reserves twice in the past 3 rounds. With the added size and experience of Simon Black, Matt Maguire, Andrew Raines and Brent Staker, they seemed to have the edge on our relatively inexperienced team. On the balance of play and possession, the Lions probably deserved the victory but it was disappointing that the our boys lost the grip on the match after putting up such a competitive effort for the first 3 quarters.

Brisbane were clearly the dominant team in the first quarter; their forward press was effective enough to lock the ball down in our defensive half for long periods as we struggled to get the Sherrin into our forward areas. However, due to some desperate Swans defence (rushing a few behinds) and some poor kicking they could only muster one goal, which proved costly as the Swans were more efficient with our forward 50 entries, mainly thanks to young topup Lloyd Perris who was involved in both goals, kicking one and setting up Daniel Robinson for the other.

Quarter time
Swans 2.2 (14)
Lions 1.5 (11)

The 2nd quarter was a more even contest - the Swans skipped away to a 15 point lead after goals by Mitch Morton, Brandon Jack and a massive 65m Andrejs Everitt special but the Lions hit back through Andrew Raines and Jordan Lisle after turnovers by the Swans defenders. Morton increased our lead, snapping a trademark opportunistic goal from 10m out, which only served to spark the Lions into action. Brisbane wrestled the lead back with 2 quick goals - a spectacular mark and goal by Richard Newell and an easy set shot by Patrick Karnezis after an egregrious overuse of the handball through the corridor led to yet another turnover. Dean Towers restored the Swans' lead when Brent Staker fell into his back, who further compounded his error by giving away a 50m penalty for umpire abuse/backchat, allowing the former North Ballarat star to kick truly from 20m.

Half time
Swans 7.6 (48)
Lions 6.8 (44)

Raines was taken off by the Lions at half time to act as the senior emergency, which was a big bonus for us as he had accumulated plenty of possessions playing as an onballer opposed to Everitt. Morton, perhaps with knowledge of his own imminent withdrawal at three quarter time, booted the Swans' next 3 goals - all from different sources. The first was when he recovered quicker than Ryan Harwood after dropping a tough marking chance, gathering the loose ball and running to the goal square. The second was when he led hard to the 50m arc to collect a Jack pass despite close attention from Hawrood and the last was a great rundown from behind on Lions defender Jordan Bourke (can be seen on the SwansTV highlights). The Lions had managed a solitary goal in between Morton's three, Lisle getting an easy mark inside 50 to nail his first goal after Jesse White had misjudged his attempt at a punch. Towers and Lisle again traded goals to give the Swans a handy 14 point advantage heading into the last term.

3 Quarter time
Swans 11.7 (73)
Lions 8.11 (59)

Morton was withdrawn for emergency duty, and with promising tall topup Thomas Head not sighted since the first half (I'm guessing due to injury), Crouch swung Tommy Walsh from fullback, where he had been excelling against the potent Lisle, to full forward to partner the subdued Tim Membrey as our forward targets. The tough task of marking the Lions' leading goalkicker fell to Xavier Richards who had been having a solid game playing on the likes of Niall McKeever and Staker.

Their ruckman Sam Michael, who had probably been second best to White for most of the day, started winning crucial hitouts allowing the Lions to put pressure on our defenders with multiple 50 entries. Due to some poor team defending, easy goals to topup Dylan Bresnehan and that man Newell again with his 3rd allowed the Lions to draw within a kick and when Lisle outmuscled his new marker Richards to kick his 3rd the Lions had erased the Swans' slender advantage in a matter of minutes. Richards struggled to the bench with cramp, sounding a SOS signal to Walsh who answered the call to resume his battle with Lisle at fullback.

White and Towers wasted gettable chances and kicked a point each, but when Alex Brown failed to beat a Lions tackler in a bid to open up the play, it allowed topup Daniel Daye to further extend the Lions' lead with a simple goal under no pressure. Matthew Dick and then later Towers were used as the spare man in defence in a vain bid to stem the flow as Karnezis widened the margin with 2 more goals, the second a fortuitous result after a wild throw-in in our defensive 50 flew over both ruckmen's head and straight into Karnezis' lap.

The Swans to their credit didn't keep up and kept attacking in a final bid to win the game but all they could manage were behinds to Towers, Shane Biggs, White (an awkward looking left foot around the corner attempt from 10m out), Stephen Wray and an awful set shot from Membrey (with a Saad-esque runup) that went out on the full. The final nail was driven into our coffin when Biggs was completely bamboozled by a Newell kick that bounced and changed direction more unexpectedly than a Shane Warne wrong'un, allowing Lisle to set up Biggs' now unattended man Todd Banfield with a simple shot on goal.

Full time
Swans 11.15 (81)
Lions 15.14 (104)

1. Tim MEMBREY - His first goalless game of the season; most of his possessions were gathered outside the forward 50 and couldn't manage to hang onto the tough grabs against tough opponents in Maguire and Close.
6. Tom MITCHELL - In Lamb's absence was the leading inside midfielder. Head-to-head with Black for most of the day, he had more of the ball than the former Brownlow medalist but couldn't quell Black's influence in the last quarter. He had plenty of clearances and touches, easily the most this season, and does his best work in close with his quick, direct and accurate hands.
10. Mitch MORTON - Had an intriguing battle with Ryan Harwood, whose close checking prevented Morton from registering more than his 5 goals. Playing exclusively forward, didn't have many as touches as in recent reserves outings but had an excellent conversion rate from his possessions.
13. Andrejs EVERITT - On review, probably had a better game than I gave him credit for on the day. Started plenty of the centre square bounces but allowed the freedom to roam up and down the ground. Effective in the centre clearances, his big frame allowing him to get first hands on the loose ball and drive the ball forward with his long kicking.
17. Tommy WALSH - Did as a good a job that could be expected on Lisle and it could be argued his move away from the back six in the last quarter unsettled the previously solid unit and contributed to our demise. Was just as impressed with his ball use today, an area I've highlighted as a concern in his previous games in defence.
18. Jesse WHITE - Another big game from White, but this time had a lot more possessions around the ground to go along with his usual 40+ hitouts. In the early stages of the game, tended to sit a kick behind play to help protect the space near the 50m arc. He pushed forward more when the Swans were attempting to peg back the lead but unfortunately kicked 3 behinds for his hard work.
22. Dean TOWERS - Not sure where he was playing early on, even tweeted that he wasn't playing as I didn't spot him in the first 10 minutes. He eventually took up position as a pseudo CHF, a position he was surprisingly effective in, with his pace on the lead giving him every chance of marking the ball, which was backed up with his strong hands.
23. Jordan LOCKYER - More responsibility on his young shoulders playing in defence instead of the wingman role. Solid without being spectacular, competed well in the marking contests.
27. Daniel ROBINSON - Continues to impress with his performances in the midfield, not looking out of place against more highly credentialled opponents. A very effective tackler and extractor of the contested ball with his hands.
28. Matthew DICK - Sometimes assigned to one of the many Brisbane talls and sometimes as the sweeper across halfback. His most involved game so far, a solid spoiler of the ball but may need to work on his kicking and decision making.
31. Harrison MARSH - Part of the inside midfield rotation, his quick hands were key in releasing Everitt for his long goal, but in general struggled with the relentless pressure of the Brisbane midfield. Spent a short time tagging Black.
33. Brandon JACK - Only 1 goal this week, but is always involved when the Swans are attacking and does end up setting up a lot of scoring attempts for his teammates. Not sure who he was playing on.
36. Alex BROWN - Started forward in a direct swap for Walsh and played there for a quarter and a bit before switching into defence. He can be quite creative with ball in hand, and his awkward size and speed can prove to be a hard match up for opposing teams. Appeared a little flustered when the Lions were on top in the last and the ball being driven into our defensive 50 repeatedly, made some poor decisions both with and without the ball which cost us goals.
42. Xavier RICHARDS - Not many touches but when he does have the ball, he looks incredibly energetic and exciting bounding down the ground. Very impressive in some one-on-one duels with McKeever, including a purple patch during the 2nd quarter in which he left the Irishman floundering on the ground after winning the ball off him.
44. Jake LLOYD - Playing in an outside running role, worked extremely hard in the hot conditions, and would have accumulated plenty of touches across the day. Smart player with good skills and awareness.
46. Shane BIGGS - From my perspective, his best game of the season. Performed his defensive duties well but was very prominent in the rebound 50s, was the recipient of many handball receives in particular from the topups.

Topups - Lloyd Perris played with the assuredness and calmness of a more experienced player. He took a smart grab coming in from the side to mark in front of Jesse O'Brien to register the Swans' opening goal and then delivered a clever pass to Robinson in the forward 50, after taking the time to assess the situation rather than blaze away. (can also be seen on the highlights video). Jordan Weir again used in defence and did well including a period where he was isolated at FB against the dangerous Karnezis. Mitch Crawford also used mainly in the back half while Stephen Wray and Harrison Green found some of the ball playing as running midfielders. Tall forward Thomas Head who had 4 goals in his last reserves game again started the game well, had the first shot at goal for us, but was not sighted after the first quarter.

Next game is against UWS Giants on Sunday 12th May 9.30am at Blacktown International Sportspark.
