Gold Coast Suns Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves
Saturday 20th July 2013 1.00pm
Metricon

The Swans magoos make their second trip to the Gold Coast in the space of two months. Despite going into the match with a weakened team, they came away with a creditable 20 point loss in tough conditions, even managing to level the scores going into the last quarter. This week's team is of similar strength in numbers but with greater experience with the inclusion of defender Rhyce Shaw, making a long awaited return to the field, joining fellow premiership winner Mitch Morton in the reserves. Shaw's inclusion comes a week after the emotional return of speedster Gary Rohan which is a sign that the Swans' injury stakes may have taken a turn for the better. The Suns are not as strong as they were then, with a number of injuries hitting their senior players.

The Swans have given up their lead on top of the Eastern Conference ladder but with only 4 more games left in the regular season should have enough wins on the board to make the finals (Top 5) due to their excellent percentage. The Suns had a nailbiting draw last week against fellow high flyers Aspley when Nathan Bock kicked his 9th goal to tie the scores. Their position is not as secure as the Swans with the NT Thunder more than capable of knocking the Suns out of the finals position.

Past Meetings
2013
R3 Reserves 15.20 (110) defeated Gold Coast Reserves 10.5 (65) @ Sydney Cricket Ground

A brilliant first half display by the Reserves set up a comfortable victory against the Suns reserves, whose lethargic start proved to be costly. Midfielders Lamb, Cunningham and Robinson set up the win with their contested ball, whose work was gleefully finished off by the forward duo of Morton and Membrey who finished with 7 goals between them.

Goals: Morton 4, Membrey 3, Cunningham 2, Brown, Sertbas, Mitchell, Robinson, Jack, Lamb
Best: Lamb, Cunningham, Robinson, Brown, White

R12 Gold Coast Reserves 10.10 (70) defeated Reserves 6.14 (50) @ Metricon Stadium

Goals: Membrey 2, Biggs, Lloyd, Dunn, Lamb, Jaffer-Williams
Best: Lamb, Lloyd, Cunningham, Biggs, Armstrong, Jaffer-Williams

2012
R2 Reserves 7.13 (55) defeated by Gold Coast 13.13 (91) @ Sydney Cricket GroundThe Reserves were hampered by the late withdrawals of Mark Seaby and Jesse White whilst their opponents the Suns had the ability to call on the full complement of 5 on their bench. The Reserves struggled to break down a resolute Suns defensive unit and lost it in the last quarter when Josh Fraser booted 4 of his 5 goals.

Goals: Walsh 2, Potter, McNeil, Lycakis, Jack, Gordon
Best: Heath, Walsh, Lycakis, Moore, Jack

R10 Reserves 16.13 (109) defeated Gold Coast 8.8 (56) @ Blacktown International Sports Park
In the wet and damp conditions out west, the talls Mark Seaby (in the ruck) and Matthew Spangher (at CHF) dominated for the Swans as they romped to a comfortable 9 goal win over the Suns. The physicality and pressure of the home team was too much for Gold Coast whose sloppiness proved costly as they could only manage 3 goals to 3 quarter time.

Goals: Spangher 4, Morton 3, Everitt 2, Seaby 2, Moody, Cunningham, Mitchell, White, Walsh
Best: Seaby, Spangher, Biggs, Everitt, Moore, Davis

R18 Gold Coast 15.10 (100) defeated by Reserves 20.11 (131) @ Metricon Stadium
A close fought game was blown apart in the last quarter when the Reserves unleashed an 8 goal display to easily triumph away at Metricon Stadium. Mitch Morton was the star forward, kicking 9 goals in a consistent all round display with Nathan Gordon and Matt Spangher's competitive displays leading the way for the Swans.

Goals: Morton 9, Spangher 3, Plug 2, Moore, Potter, McNeil, White, Everitt, Gordon
Best: Gordon, Spangher, Morton, Meredith, Plug, Cunningham

Team List
Listed players
#|Name|Games|Goals|Votes|Notes
1|Tim MEMBREY|10|24|4|Sat out the whole game last week as the senior emergency in reserve.
2|Rhyce SHAW|0|0|0|Back from the world's longest abdominal injury. Expect to have limited game time
10|Mitch MORTON|6|26|13|(seniors emergency) Was starved of action in the forward line and was held goalless in a reserves game for the first time since God knows when.
16|Gary ROHAN|1|2|0|As good a return as could be hoped for, played 40 minutes with pace and vigour and should see that increased to around 60-70 minutes this week.
19|Tony ARMSTRONG|8|0|6|Topped the possessions along with a good tackle tally last week but not in the bests.
23|Jordan LOCKYER|14|1|3|In line for a big game against either Bock or Dixon.
27|Daniel ROBINSON|13|9|7|Double digit clearances, plenty by hand. Will be the 'senior' midfielder this week due to the absences of Cunningham, Marsh and Lloyd.
28|Matthew DICK|10|3|0|Interesting swap with Marsh into the midfield in the last quarter, perhaps he could be one of the fill-ins.
36|Alex BROWN|14|3|12|Numbers have dried up since being drafted permanently into the back line.
42|Xavier RICHARDS|11|0|10|(seniors emergency) Had a great battle against the Giants' ruckmen last week, this week's task doesn't get any easier against the in-form Nathan Bock.
46|Shane BIGGS|14|1|19|Number 1 rebounder.

Changes
In: Membrey (seniors emergency) Shaw (injury)
Out: Harry CUNNINGHAM (seniors), Dean TOWERS (seniors), Harrison MARSH (???), Jake LLOYD (concussion)

The departures of Cunningham, Marsh and Lloyd leave a big gaping hole in the midfield and the solution to that problem will remain a mystery right up until the first bounce. I suspect one or both of the half backs in Armstrong, Dick and/or Biggs will get a spot and Morton might be also seconded from the forwards. It would definitely assist in addressing his lack of match fitness. Shaw could also play there but with limited game time. It will be interesting to see how they manage both Shaw and Rohan's time on the ground - will they run both of them on at the same time. It might also mean some of the topups will be rotated through there more often (see below).

Membrey should slot straight into Towers' position as a key forward target.

Perris was impressive in his leadership on the field as well as his general output. He was noticeably thrusted into the centre square setup in the last quarter against UWS, when the outcome of the match had long been decided. He should get more of a run there this week due to the lack of midfield options. Jaffer-Williams was also a topup in the last match at Metricon and impressed so much he earnt a vote from the coaches.

There is added height this week with the drafting in of Levi Sands, who has rucked in the past month or two for us, as well as giant Jacob Dawes who caught the eye when the Reserves played in the Newcastle just 2 weeks prior. Their inclusions could allow Head to be released to the forward line to present himself as another key target alongside Membrey.

The Suns have a long term injury returnee themselves with big, bearded, bustling Charlie Dixon who was showing a lot of promise earlier in the year. He should line up alongside Nathan Bock in the forward line, and despite Bock struggling to run out matches, his height and his experience is causing consternation amongst NEAFL defences. He booted a lazy 9 last week.

Jack Martin continues his 'internship' with the Suns. He has been very impressive so far and is regularly among the Suns' best players, and has been rated by some as being better than Jaeger O'Meara's corresponding NEAFL season last year, and we all know how good the Jaeger bomb has been for their senior side this year.

All in all, their impressive inclusions have been balanced by some big outs and they will only have one more listed player than the Swans (12 versus 11).

Fabulous to see Shaw back. It's ironic after all the help he gave Rohan in rehab that they're now making their comebacks together.

By the way I see Shane Biggs on the best list once again. Going to be a very hard decision whether to keep him or not if he keeps playing well. He might even seek a chance elsewhere anyway. But I had a look at the rules and there is no reason we can't keep him for another year as we can keep Rookies for three years.

I like the "experience and elite ability" phrase used to describe our ressies in the match report on the Suns website. Also the description "Swans dynamic ruck-men"!

On paper the Suns had a very good side so full credit to our guys for beating them up there.

Good to see Robinson getting best again, must be improving.

I agree there were some pretty top players playing in their Twos this week. Our top up rucks must have been pretty good. Robbo has come back from injury quite well then. He was ok last week but obviously really good this week.

Geez, Tony Armstrong is the forgotten man, isn't he?

Seeing him this year, to be frank I don't think he is up to AFL finals standard and just fringish for season proper. That being the case we are better off putting senior game time into players who will do it for us in this years and next years finals.

Geez, Tony Armstrong is the forgotten man, isn't he?

It seems that he is way down the pecking order and I suspect unless he is contracted that he wont be at the club next year. He will join Marty Mattner who leaves the club. I also suspect that this will be Jude's last year and possibly Shaw & LRT.

Thanks Ugg. This is a great read, and invaluable for those who can't make it along to see the twos play. Though parts of it make me feel a tad sad. It must be very difficult being a fringe player with this team at the moment, or to succumb to a minor injury and then have to fight all over again to get another run in the seniors.

Tangentially, B. Plug, now there's a very unfortunate name.

Why would we risk a player who has played 80 mins of footy and ends up puffed out in a backline that is performing to the high degree that they are. No way! I have no doubt the Match committee will stick with the current backs and probably the current team next week. We cannot afford any non match fit players against Wretchmond, they are playing too well. Even half match fit players. We no longer are in a position that experienced players who have been injured expect to come back in or be given preferential treatment. Our depth is huge and if a player is fit and playing well he gets the nod over a player who is unfit or out of form.

Jetts, Sammy, Rhyce, Rooster & even goodsie are or will come back through the Twos. It is all about match fitness and we have some important matches coming up and we simply can't risk players who are underdone. Trust the depth.

As much as it pains me to say that a champion like Goodsie should come back through the Twos I think he should because he will be totally out of match fitness. Last year he had 4 matches off in the middle of the year and came back. He took a few weeks to get match fit even then. This time his time off is 6 matches and it is going to be much harder to regain match fitness and better he has a game at a lower, slower level where he can ease himself into the game. The a week later present for selection. I think we will manage without him until then. A totally fit Goodsie is better than one on one leg even if the one on one leg is still good.

All very well in theory, but last year we had a luxury of him coming back mid season.
There is no time for him to play a couple in the 2's as we only have 6 games left this season, and he is still a number of weeks away.

A semi fit Goodes would be more dangerous than a fully fit Morton for example.

One of the reasons you do it is to be sure that you have got the rehab right. sam reid lasted 10 minutes and we were forced to activate a sub then and place him back on the lti list for another six weeks. i know that goodsie is an amazing player but he is an amazing player when fit. when injured he is a liability. our last six games could potentially be against collingwood, geelong hawthorn hawthorn geelong and hawthorn (for example). which game do you have him on the bench for and he only lasts ten minutes ??

There have been 2 other quad injuries in the AFL this year, and both of them have been re-injured almost straight away as well.
They should have been more cautious with Sam, and given the game was against Melbourne and part way thru the year, it may have been a better option.

It would be a big call to put Goodes in the 2's. I doubt they would risk him.

I agree I'd be reluctant to do it as well, but the ten minutes he stayed on the field against adelaide at the scg when he clearly couldnt run cost us that game last season. I simply couldnt have a player play that you would be concerned about an injury. you just have to go with your fully fit team.

If he came off as soon as he injured himself in the GF without giving himself a few minutes to try and 'run it off' like he did in the game you say he 'cost us', we'd probably be trying to avenge a GF defeat this year instead of trying to go back to back...

he should have come off as soon as he injured it in the GF. His running it off cost us three forward fifty entries when we just started to smack them because he was hobbling around on one leg.

there is a difference between a muscle injury called a hamstring involving soft tissue and an inability to run and a structural issue such as a PCL which prevents you from turning well, getting up to top speed quickly and causes pain when you are trying to. and in either case you go see the medical experts you dont wave them away.

look lets be clear he was heroic in the gf. But he clearly couldnt run for about ten minutes in both games and on both occasions he should have gone straight off to have it looked at.

Well at least you concede that. The rest of your 'in hindsight' criticisms are just bizarre. But, whatever.

quite.

but not hindsight. watch the games.

easy to justify his decision in the second quarter of the gf because we won, easy to criticise his decision in the adelaide game because we lost.

But at least I have a simple and consistent position - if you suffer an injury which is stopping you from running and competing you get the medical staff to look at it - and hey they may be able to strap it up and get you back on the field.

But whatever as you say. Lets play injured players and not bother with medical staff at all.

I wonder on those figures how Hadden got in the best?

I wonder on those figures how Hadden got in the best?

From what I understand Ressies bests are not based solely on stats but on players meeting their particular KPIs. Maybe Hadden was tagging or something - whatever he was doing, it must have been what the coaching staff wanted to see.

Can anyone fill us in a bit more about this lad and whether we're likely to see more of him in future?
