View Full Version : Franklin Rumour

MightyBloods
24th July 2013, 04:25 PM
I heard on SEN this afternoon that the Swans maybe making a play for Lance Franklin. On the half-time show (Daniel Harford) every wednesday they do an 'around the grounds' report from a representative from each state. Russell Barwick does the NSW report covering the Giants and Swans. He mentioned that the Swans were making enquiries and that a package possibly containing some of Mumford,Everitt and Morton was being thrown around. This mixed with the potential retirement of Jude would go close to freeing up salary space.

GWS would either send their No 1 pick to Hawthorn or send some of their out of contract kids (who have not signed yet and wanting to return to Victoria)....ie Taylor Adams.

Barwick also mentioned that he raised this with an ex-Swans player last week and the ex-player smiled at him and said he also had heard the rumour.

If true, if the club could pull this off without losing any young talent I'd be rapt. Mumford would be the only player guaranteed in the starting 22 and our reliance on him has depreciated with the development of both Pyke and White. I still class Everitt and Morton as players on the edge of selection if everyone fit although I have liked Everitt's input over the recent weeks.

Thoughts?

lol - isn't it a bit early for silly season?

While it would be nice to think of a forward line containing Franklin, Tippett, Goodes, Reid, McGlynn and Rohan, I think this will need a lot of luck to get over the line.

Though the outcry would be HILARIOUS to behold.

First there is no way Franklin would fit into the carefully managed Swans culture, secondly they don't need him with Tippett, Reid & White (now he has lifted his work rate). Buddy is a champion but he is a loose cannon with a dickey knee who would not have the discipline to follow the Swan's game plan. I hope he goes to GWS along side Johnathon Patton. Finally, have you forgotten the "no Dickheads" policy? :rofl

Is this the same rumor that has a multi-club trade sending our pick 5 to GC for Ablett (they'll on-trade this in some complex deal to GW$), pick 4 to the Tiges (this will be on-traded to the GC so they can do something to compensate for losing Ablett) & we''ll get Jack Reiwoldt (while we are recruiting superfluous forwards in Buddy, we'd best get a spare); but the recruiting geniuses who are getting Buddy us at the expense of Mummy, Dre & Mitch have masterminded that Dre & our pick 3 end up at the Dogs who will clear Will Minson on to us (after all, we are losing Mummy in this trade) and Ayce Cordy (since we already had Graham & Neil). Oh, & the AFL are to increase the CoL allowance to $1.3billion to fit all these players in.

Sheesh! These rumors are hilarious! Surely it's his agent bumping up Buddy's price?

I think we could be players in this if we wanted to, but the real issue is that we don't want, nor do we need, Franklin.

The good thing about Tippett, Jesse, Pykie & Mummy is that all could play as key forwards, all of them are capable of kicking a couple to a few in the same game (so their combined talley could easily be half a dozen plus for a game), NONE of them seem to mind if they're not the focal point at full forward (they're happy to be the decoy, or the contest maker or happy for the others when one of the others scores).
Most other single power-forwards will have off games (meaning that there must be an alternative avenue for goals), or they get grumpy when they are not the focal avenue to goal production. This can result in petulance or cause them to roam further afield to get into the play (meaning they're not at home to kick the goals).
Moreover, our current talls can play a variety of positions (FF, CHF, ruck, tall winger for Jesse??, tall last line defender, competitive CHB for kick-ins after opposition points) and for the last few weeks seemingly effectively combining. Hopefully this might be another pioneering new gameplan developed by the Swans that other clubs will firstly have to counter (like the flood, stoppage, & the slingshot rebound) - while they're doing this, we're surging toward the finals - & then the other teams try to emulate (by which time the Swans are developing a new gameplan. Beauty of this one (if it works) I'd that it requires recruiting the right (possibly unique) players ... athletic, agile, strong and rediculously tall.

I had a twitter brawl with Barwick last year after he said 'Sam Reid is carrying an injury'. He hasn't been to Swans training in years and is full of BS in my opinion.

A) We don't need him. b) he is not good enough. c) he keeps breaking. d) why???? e) just my opinion but I don't think he is a dickhead. Of course he would have an ego, they all do, it would be unheard of for a squad of 44 players to be all shrinking violets (they are not) but its not a headlining issue. May be a Plugger in waiting, wanting a bit of peace and quiet, wouldn't get it in W.A., S.A., or Victoria. But no. I cannot see it.

This story so patently nonsensical that I suspect that it isn't a "real" story at all. Not a mindless beatup by incompetent football journo's, nor a threadbare attempt to raise Fraklin's price by an unscrupulous agent.

Call me Mr Suspicious if you like but I think this is more likely the opening move in another attempt by the Victorian clubs to strip the Swans of the cost of living. The implied threat being . . . . "If the Swans don't lose the CoL allowance they will steal Franklin, then the best player from every Victorian team!!!!"

It appears a @@@@load of football people don't agree with you. I'll concede the 'experts' sometimes appear anything but, especially where Sydney are concerned, but the raw numbers would suggest your Buddy non-love has clouded your judgement as far as the GF goes...

The thing about Franklin is he can turn a game in ten minutes.

Anyway, back to the COLA. The AFL already pays for it, it reviews every player contract and it sees all of the club financial statements and audits, so 'handing control' of the allowance to the AFL is only symbolic.

Haven't heard a word out of Swann or Maguire since Colless released this:

- The AFL salary cap increased approximately $600,000 year-on-year from 2012 to 2013.
- Changes to the veterans list meant all Clubs received salary cap relief of $112,000 per eligible player outside the salary cap (compared to half the annual salary of up to two eligible players in previous years).
- At the end of the 2012 season, six senior listed players ? Matt Spangher, Trent Dennis-Lane, Mark Seaby, Jarred Moore, Brett Meredith and Nathan Gordon? were delisted or traded to other Clubs. This player movement opened up approximately $1M in the Club?s salary cap. Those players were replaced with draftees and, of course, Kurt Tippett.

Likewise. Instrumental in getting them back in the game. I would've had him B.O.G at 3qtr time.

His contested marking and conversion is poor. I can't see how he's selfish though? I think people like to invent things because they don't like him. He works hard, chases and his field kicking is very good.

He won't be at the Swans next year though, obviously.

I've heard there is a clause in his contract that says he can go "home" for a third round pick. Although he's from WA, he did pass through Sydney once when he was a kid, and there are some other people named Franklin living here who are possibly his relatives, so he looks on Sydney as a second home.

Short threads are boring.

Ha, you cant possibly believe what anyone says, especially when players are rumoured to be leaving....I remember an interview with plugger way back in 1994 a question was asked about him re-signing, his commitment to the saints etc and he says he will be re-signing and be a one club player! We all know what happened, you cant believe anything in this industry IMO. Just saying, he's a selfish player, inaccurate kick for goal, messed up knee, hamstring problems and I'd much prefer Tippett, White and Reid. I think most Swans fans would realise that his cons are probably not an ideal fit with the Bloods culture, nor ideal as a massive long-term investment.

We should do all we can to keep Mummy, he's showing recently he's still well and truly our number1 ruckman. No chance we can afford Buddy, no chance he'd be anywhere near our number one priority in trade week. If we had noTippett then yes, but we do so it seems ridiculous we would go after him. How could Hawthorn afford Mumford just quietly, he wouldn't leave us for less than 400-500k ad I cannot see how they could fit him in? Unless Buddy leaves of course.

Saints will get some good picks this year and may be involved in 3-way deals (they have a recent history of 3-ways). I wonder if Lamb would appear on their menu?

We should be trying harder to keep Lamb more than White imo.

We must keep Lamb. Perhaps time for Jude to announce his retirement at the end of the season?

Hawks, Pies and GWS would all be after a good ruck IMHO. And so would we if Mummy left. Having said that, I think Boyd, Steelebottom and Franklin will boost us in other areas.

I don't believe this myself but I will pass it on. I heard it this morning.

Magpies keen on Mummy. Heath Shaw interested in a change of scenery to Swans!

After what I saw last night, I think they have already found their ruckman.

The Heath Shaw one comes up every year. Mind you I would take him.

Grundy is good but don't know if he is up to playing a full seaon as the Pie's #1 ruck yet. Went straight into the fantasy team though.

No one can stand Buckley.
But if so, Bukley has been at the club for all of Shaw's career, so why has he stayed, or is only Buckley the coach he can't stand?

Would we have the most brothers in a squad if we took him?

He was very good, wasn't he? He's very young, though, and I do think they'd still look for a top flight ruckman as their first ruck if they believe they're still in the mix to compete next year (which I am sure they will believe).

I've got no idea.
I hope it's not true. I don't think that it's true but I heard it. It's more that Mumford is apparently gone next year.

How many posts ? 93 , or 94 ? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But anyway , well done to Mighty Bloods for raising this whole issue back in July. He's the Damian Barrett of RWO  !

lol - isn't it a bit early for silly season?

While it would be nice to think of a forward line containing Franklin, Tippett, Goodes, Reid, McGlynn and Rohan, I think this will need a lot of luck to get over the line.

Though the outcry would be HILARIOUS to behold.

Isn't it great wiping away the tears of laughter?

Couldn't have predicted it better myself.

Just assuage our concerns , will you ? The imminent scoop will not contain the words "police" , "investigating" , "nightclub" , "King's Cross" and "Franklin" , will it ?! :-)

ok, here it is but it shouldn't be a great surprise.
GWS have thrown big money at Dale Thomas in the last few days to try and change his mind to go to Carlton. Steve Silvagni had a coffee with him at the Paragon Cafe in Rathdown St Carlton last week. Carlton expected Thomas to say yes on Thursday so that they could lodge the papers to the AFL on the Friday (just gone). Thomas is stewing over the decision this weekend and his mates(Malthouse and Swann) have almost been living with him over the past 24 hours. to ensure he still goes to Carlton.
On Friday he was likely to go to GWS...now, well I think his strong relationships at Carlton will still get him there.
GWS are going hard at some players behing the scenes.

Thank God you weren't arrested or at least had a very good lawyer to get you out quickly.

No doubt there won't be a squeak from anyone in Melbourne complaining that Thomas didn't go to GWS either.

Any news on which players?

Should package Benny with White to the Dogs for their first pick or even Collingwood for their first.

It would be great if Daisy accepted a $700k/annum + 10% COLA deal with GWS, saying the extra cash put him over the line.

"You can find a pretty cheap pad in Blacktown and I can use to extra cash to hangout with Buddy," Thomas said.

Might be just enough for Eddie and Mick to kiss and make up.
