NEAFL 2014 Round 11

Gold Coast Suns Reserves v Sydney Swans Reserves

Sunday 8th June 2014
Metricon Stadium 11.30am

The Swans travel up to the Gold Coast looking to continue the Suns' miserable NEAFL campaign. With the senior side continually struck down with injuries, a patched up side of listed players and young top ups have struggled against both fellow AFL Reserves sides and the Queensland NEAFL teams alike. They have struggled to kick goals all year with last week's total of 12 goals their highest for the year. They will be slightly strengthened with a return of a few senior players into their senior team having a flow-on effect of some players dropping back to their twos but it will be hard to see them upsetting to table leading Swans who have a minor injury list in comparison.

The Swans have already hosted the Suns this year and walked away with a comprehensive 100 point victory.

Team List
Listed players
#|Name|Games|Goals|Votes|Notes
1|Tim MEMBREY|8|29|25|In a rich vein of form. Being given bits of midfield time in order to expand his game.
5|Ryan O'KEEFE|4|1|0|Don't underestimate his on-field coaching role in helping our young onballers out.
6|Tom MITCHELL|4|6|12|A little surprising not to be named as an emergency.
10|Zak JONES|7|0|9|A very attacking game from half-back last week.
13|Toby NANKERVIS|7|13|12|17 disposals, 35 hitouts and 3 goals
16|Gary ROHAN|5|0|0|(senior emergency)Not a huge game statistically, but was conspicuous with his daring runs from defence.
17|Tommy WALSH|3|1|0|Played as a KPD, went off injured in 2nd quarter.
18|Jordan LOCKYER|8|1|4|Season-high 29 touches off halfback/wing.
27|Daniel ROBINSON|8|9|16|The new leader in the inaugural NEAFL MVP award.
29|George HEWETT|7|5|1|Showed ability in the forward line with 2 well taken goals
30|Lewis ROBERTS-THOMSON|2|3|0|Cautionary rest last week.
31|Harrison MARSH|8|7|6|With a packed midfield, has spent time in defence.
33|Brandon JACK|5|4|3|(senior emergency)After a muted start to the season, hit back with easily his best game against the Thunder.
35|Sam NAISMITH|5|5|3|Size and mobility an issue for opposition defenders.
36|Aliir ALIIR|7|1|1|Had a solid game overall last week, but will be disappointed by the late goals conceded to his opponent.
38|Mike PYKE|0|0|0|(senior emergency)Subject to a fitness test.
41|Lloyd PERRIS|8|7|5|With his fellow mids in Mitchell, ROK and Robinson grabbing all the headlines, he's had an impressive debut year so far.
42|Xavier RICHARDS|8|0|2|Starting to regain some of the counter-attacking play that was prominent last year.
45|Patrick MITCHELL|8|3|0|Doesn't wander far from the goalsquare, and if Pyke also plays this week will probably be stuck down there again for the majority of the game.
46|Shane BIGGS|8|0|7|Leading rebounder in the side with 4.8 rebound 50s a game.

Changes
In: Pyke, Roberts-Thomson
Out: Dean TOWERS (shoulder)

Towers out of action for 2-3 weeks with his injury while Walsh looks to have recovered from his despite leaving the NT game during the 2nd quarter. The team may lose 1 or 2 more depending on Rampe and Pyke's fitness tests.

In: Hall, Lemmens, Sexton, Blood, Callinan, Cornish, Haslem, Holland, Trask
Out: Ryan AGITA, Cody FILEWOOD, Harrison FRASER, Caleb HAY, Isaac HAY, Karmichael HUNT, Liam McNEVEN, Thomas THYNNE

15 listed players named but since one of Lemmens, Hall, Hunt or Sexton will be on the Suns' seniors bench, only 14 maximum will line up for the Suns Reserves. This figure may be reduced to 13 if Rory Thompson isn't passed fit. They once again look short of genuine forward targets with Jack Leslie, drafted as a promising key defender, having to fill in as a key forward, with at least his 198cm frame providing a target for the Suns midfield to aim at.

Their best NEAFL player has undoubtedly been Jeremy Taylor. Unlucky not to break into the strong senior side at the moment, he is the leading disposal winner with 23.7 per game, followed closely by Leigh Osborne with 21.5

Spare a thought for young ruckman Will Wolbers, who has carried the ruck for their reserves team due to injuries at different times to Tom Nicholls, Zac Smith and Daniel Gorringe. He might have to face not 1, not 2, but 3 Swans ruckmen.

Updated: Hunt left out so he's in the seniors.

Sources close to the LRT faction reveal they are up in arms over the imputation that Lewie is not a ruckman.

Ugg, Murphy didn't participate in much on ball training wed afternoon. There was a pretty rigorous match play for about 15 minutes, and he was only onfield for a few. Finished the session with laps. He may have a niggle..

Membrey stringing a few together now. I'm sure that's what the coaching staff want to see. He'll be ready if a spot opens up through injury.

Apparently Tom Mitchell injured in third quarter and went off

Any news in what happened to Mitchell? Before I heard that news I thought he would probably play next week ahead of mcglynn to give benny a rest after his knock today

I agree I reckon it might be membrays week for a call up next week

Lockyer 31 possessions starting to get some consistency. He has some senior footy in him if he can get his body right

Pleasing news today amongst the bad. Lockyer finally showing form is good, might save himself from the end of season axe and is a useful size for us going forward if he can rise to senior standard.

Pyke played well by all accounts, could be needed next week although if we need replacements I reckon they will go for pace as Port are a quick side without being overly tall. Might not want to be top heavy against them.

Tippett out only, one would expect Pyke in. But Tippett and Franklin out: Membrey gets a game?

The NSW/ACT Rams (with more than a few Swans Academy players in their ranks and could involve Heeney and Davis amongst others) is actually the scheduled curtain raiser for the Port game with the ressies scheduled for a 10am start at Drummoyne Oval. Could be a tight fit getting to the SCG before first bounce if you're coming from there.

hazard a guess the swannies ressies might be 10 goals a head at 3qtr time anyway :) ..........so plenty of time then to get to the Rams game !

"After collecting 23 disposals, midfielder Tom Mitchell injured his right ankle in a one-on-one marking contest deep in the Swans defence at the beginning of the third term "

Nice work to the beginning of the third term. Hope his injury is not too bad, it was an ankle injury that he had in the finals last year wasn't it?

The highlights are up on the Swans website now. Membrey looks ready. Maybe not this week, but would definitely give him a game v. Richmond. There's a beautiful goal from Hewett at the end of the video; he's going to be a star.
