Sadly, despite our crowds growing this year, a troubling trend is evidenced in the figures released by MediaWeek in relation to GF TV ratings:

"TV audiences in Sydney watching AFLGF
2005: 991k (win)
2006: 765k (loss)
2012: 610k (win)
2014: 551k (loss)"

Not too sure what to make of it..

Maybe the TV crowd knew more than we did!

Assume that's an average and a whole bunch turned off when it became clear what a one sided contest it was going to be.

Nop that's not so - it started low, rose a bit then went back to low. So there was not an initial surge that was lost.

I would've hoped the buddy factor would have made it at least rate higher than 2012

McAvaney is such a pathetic excuse for a commentator. The only one he is better than is BT.

7 broadcast the footage in standard definition....morons.

If we all watched the game on an iphone 6 plus it would be fine but no, most households have huge tv's that make the deficiencies in SD stick out like the proverbial. Particularly in sport, even more particularly in a fast moving game like AFL.

The display definition also applies to the commentary. 7 commentate in standard def while everyone else, including various radio stations, commentate in high def.

Almost no-one I know watches the GF, so may be some truth to that.

That's a huge drop in numbers though. I find myself wondering how they estimate viewers, whether the methods have changed, how big the errors are. Are more people watching on devices other than a TV? Or not watching live? Does it coincide with a big drop in cable subscriptions? Or is it really how it looks, just a big drop off?

That I agree with, but the decline surprises me.

I honestly am not that bothered with the whole SD vs. HD thing, I'd be surprised if people actually opted to not watch the game because of it.

More Grand Final Parties, BBQ's and events (GWS & Swans this year) mean less TV's on..... Pretty big turn outs at the fan viewing from what I'm told and plenty of pubs were fairly full on the day.

A few people I mentioned it to, expressed surprised that it was on in the arvo, not night. Really weird as it has always been at the same time. I think that because the other code makes a big night time thing of the gf, that people here have come to expect all big events to be played at night.
