NEAFL 2016 Round 17

Sydney Swans Reserves v Giants

Saturday 23rd July 2016
10.05am
Sydney Cricket Ground

The last time these two sides met, in Round 11, the Giants inflicted upon the Swans their first and only defeat of the year. With both teams weakened by injury, playing 11 and 10 listed players respectively, it will be hard to pick a winner and perhaps the result may hinge on the performance of each side's Academy and topups.

The Swans sit comfortable on top of the NEAFL ladder and with such a strong percentage have all but secured the minor premiership. While they had a crushing victory over the Suns reserves at Blacktown last week, with 9 changes including 7 listed players from that side, the team will look very different this week. The Giants are involved in a 4 way struggle for the crucial 2nd spot after a surprising loss to the Lions Reserves last week (they suffered a few injuries mid game).

Out: Harry CUNNINGHAM (seniors), Jordan DAWSON (???), Tom DERICKX (???), Jordan FOOTE (seniors), Isaac HEENEY (seniors), Tyrone LEONARDIS (seniors emergency), Xavier RICHARDS (seniors)

5 players elevated for seniors or senior emergency duty. Derickx seemed to injure himself in last week's game although we haven't received any official notification from the club. Dawson I can only guess has suffered another injury as well.

The big question is where Teddy will line up. I think it will all depend on where the coaches see Ted offering most value going forward and heading into the AFL finals. It is as a key defender, where he would be called upon if anything (touch wood) happened to Grundy, Aliir or Rampe; or is it as a forward where, depending on how his younger brother goes, he could still be a viable alternative as a tall/decoy forward.

McGlynn to split time between the midfield and forward like Heeney did last week and should be joined by Jack, Rose and possibly Marsh or O'Riordan in the middle. Galloway showed signs of improvement last week and will continue to get invaluable time in the ruck against the likes of Simpson and Flynn as the backup to Nankervis. Marsh will be on restricted time but his return is sorely needed in a team lacking defenders.

In: Bartholomaeus, Deep, Hardman, Reinhard, Veale, Wilson
Out: Will GOWERS, Callum McFADDEN

Wilson and Reinhard to bolster our goalkicking stocks, although Reinhard has only kicked 1 goal in his last 5 after a brilliant 16 in his first 7.

Hebron and Baron-Hay did very good jobs as key defenders but had the luxury of playing in a dominant team.

Hardman is a 173cm forward pocket from Warners Bay near Newcastle who has represented the NSW/ACT Rams in this year's U18 champs. Deep won the Round 11 AFL Sydney Rising Star nomination. Both are Swans Academy members.

In: Buntine, Hoskin-Elliott, Mohr, Whitfield, Bance, Cumming, Whitfield
Out: Tom DOWNIE, Daniel LLOYD, Caleb MARCHBANK, Rhys PALMER, Mitch MAGUIRE, Nathan COXALL

Whitfield can't break back into their strong seniors team after missing last week's AFL game through illness. Hoskin-Elliott is back after another injury layoff, and the Swans defenders will be very nervous knowing that Hoskin-Elliott has starred in the NEAFL against us in the past.

Barrett will have to spearhead their midfield in the absence of his partner-in-crime Daniel Lloyd, both players have put up big numbers in the NEAFL this year. Stewart will be the main threat up forward, averaging over 2 goals a game this year.

Macreadie was touted as a possible number 1 in this year's draft although that hype has ameliorated after some average performances this year.

I saw Jack playing in Newcastle a couple of weeks ago and looked good. Very fast and kicked a set shot from 55m. Has plenty to offer and can play outside mid or small forward.

The game is being held at the SCG as a curtain raiser, so lets hope not!

Mind you, Ludwig might be able to supply the odds of the game being moved from the SCG sometime between now and 9.55am tomorrow morning on the basis the weather forecast suggests it might be a little cloudy in Sydney tomorrow.

But the North Koreans are nonetheless prepared and have come out with all their red and white regalia.

Newman having another great game. O'Riordan very good as well. Nankervis had a great 1st half, but tailed off in the 3rd qtr. Rose working hard and doing some nice things, but sloppy with disposal. BJ having a very poor game. McGlynn doing well enough. Not much else to get excited about. Topups disappointing.

Some really disappointing kicking at goal in the 2nd half - we had our chances to win with some more composed kicking for goal - sadly some of our more experienced players were offenders as well. It is windy of course which doesnt help but you shouldn't miss from 20 out with no angle!

The one big positive for me was the quality of Nic Newman's all around game. At least at NEAFL level he looks a cut above. He's so composed, has excellent vision and decision making and can back it up with skilled disposal by foot and hand. He looks to have the kind of game that should make it at AFL level. I would really like to see him get a call up next week. He's got a real physical element to his game as well, which is usually a good indicator if a player can step up to senior level. Could be a better option down back than McVeigh if he can produce anything close to what he's shown in the reserves.

I haven't been that enamoured with Newman until the last few months but I agree he's doing everything right at the moment. Thought he should have got a go today given how short in numbers we are in defence instead of asking a stand-in like Cunningham or Foote

The other positive was Nankervis in the ruck. Did something to his ankle in the last and spent a lot of time as a forward but before that was great in the ruck contests and competitiveness

Other than that I don't think anyone really impressed me that much

I would guess that the role that Newman would have had to play today in Snrs may have prevented him from making the Snr team ?

Ie Cunningham and Lloyd so far ie up to half time have been playing Macca and zacs roles

Therefore foote has slotted outside of the backline primarily to half time

Foote has a lot more two way running in the midfield then Nic Newman would be able to cope with

I wonder if we will see Nic get more time in the midfield in ressies to prime him ready ?

I don't think Coach Shaw would have been overly disappointed with the outing in the sense that the work rate and pressure skills were pretty good for the whole match, even amongst all the skinny bodied top ups out there. I think the number of scoring shots each team had was a fair reflection of the ability to win the ball and get it going in the right direction. But the scoreboard reflected that the Giants had a bit more system, skill and composure in their forward 50.

I suspect Coach Longmire would have been a little less enamoured in the sense that those he might think about as senior options didn't show the skill level necessary, on the whole.

Newman was probably one exception. His ball use was good, and he showed some dash and dare running the ball out. Nankervis continued his good form too. He wasn't as dominant as last week but still pretty good. I suspect Sinclair must be looking over his shoulder at what Nankervis is dishing up in the reserves (which can only be a good thing).

The only other one who impressed me somewhat was Marsh, who came on after quarter time and was pretty decent in defence and through the midfield. He needs another couple of weeks, you'd think, before pushing for a senior recall, but it was a solid return after his few week layoff.

Rose, Jack, McGlynn and Hiscox all got plenty of the ball but butchered it far too often.

Nico

It is as if the whole club trained last week purely on butchering the footy.

Usually when the team plays badly they only name 5 players in the best players list. If it's a particularly bad loss like the 183 point loss to the Giants last year they only named 3 players.

I'm with you Liz,if there was only a little more scoreboard pressure might have been a different finish.
Toppies were generally good,Davis a bit wasteful but no worse than the rest,Hardman had a good go for a 16 yr old,Wilson just missed a couple of chances but kicked a cracker in the last qtr with a great pressure act which resulted in a goal that got them back into the game.Baron-Hey & Hebron good under the pump in defence for youngsters yet again..

It seems this year that the NEAFL is providing a good stepping stone to AFL. None of the debutants seem out of their depth.

That goal from Wilson was absolutely fantastic - I really like him as a player, he really does some nice things.

NEAFL highlights Rd 17 - July 25, 2016 - sydneyswans.com.au (http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/video/2016-07-25/neafl-highlights-rd-17-july-25-2016)

For once the highlights have no boring vision of set shot goals!

Only because there were no set shot goals on the day, but hey let's not quibble about the specifics.

I'll add my own highlight, young Hardman's exciting forward play that deserved a goal but had a cruel bounce at the end with his dribble kick.

I'll admit Hardman surprised me. Nicely. He was ok out there.
Can hardly expect a fantastic game with that many toppies in the mix and hardly any go to players. Bit disappointed in Ted and Benny's output tho.

the wind was a factor. Not a breeze. A Mighty Wind. However, kicking for goal was not exactly hit and miss. More miss and miss. Still, it wasn't horrible

I get the impression that Ted is pretty relaxed about the phase-down in his footy career. He has a lovely photo and post on his Instagram account @tedrichards25. But I'm sure if he gets selected for the seniors he will still be giving us his 100%.

I thought Ted was okay once he moved back into the backline. He was organising the backline which I'm sure was a great learning experience for the youngsters like Baron-Hay and Hebron playing back there. He did cop one almighty spray from James Rose in the last quarter when he took a shot from the boundary that didn't score.

Excellent to hear that a youngster like Rose was getting stuck into an elder of the club like Teddy! Very impressive. Bespeaks courage and leadership and passion for the team.

Great! One of the benefits from moving seniors back to the reserves - such as ROK in 2014.

I saw Teddy in the Brewongle stand lift at half time.
He asked me if I'd seen the ressies... I said no, what happened.
He said, "the wind. The wind happened."
I take it they lost.

That kid looks alright. Good skills and a bit of speed. It will be interesting to watch his development over the next couple of years.

I see today along with Ben Davis (National Draft) that Jake Brown, Ryan Hebron & Matt Wilson have been nominated in State AFL Draft Combine !
I read that they had to be nominated by 2 or more AFL clubs to trigger this nomination.Assuming the Swans wouldn't be one of them!
Can someone explain the working of all this?
