Kieran Jack is a big out. His work through the midfield is sometimes underrated. He gets a lot of loose ball and delivers inside 50 a lot.

Interesting that X.Richards is still in - assuming Tippett plays mainly forward as would make sense, it does make us quite top-heavy (particularly given Heeney an Rohan play tall as well).

I don't understand. Isn't the makeup of the forward line the same as it has been for the past few weeks. Tippett in for Nankervis and if anything is actually making our forward line more mobile.

Top heavy, as I understand it, means a side has too many tall and less mobile players. None of those 3 players make us top heavy. Rohan and Heeney don't play tall, they play to their height which is almost the ideal for a player, in that they have a decent leap, take a good grab and are very very mobile. To me Richards in the side adds value. If left out who would have replaced him?

Is Marsh for Talia based on LTIL or can players be swapped onto the senior list as needed?

Or did Talia get injured again and I didn't hear about it?

Once you go on the LTIL you have to remain there for a minimum of 8 weeks. Hence the story in the papers today about Tippett actually being ready to play last week but couldn't because 8 weeks hadn't past since he was put on the LTIL. Also I believe you have to be injured, you can't just put senior list player on the injured list just to promote a rookie.

Tippett is likely to spend more time forward than Nankervis has, so it will be different.

With Buddy playing further up the ground we've wanted someone to play that deeper role, but Tippett can now do that.

I don't think you also need Richards there when Tippett is - particularly given that Heeney and Rohan can take contested marks (hence my reference to them originally).

Richards has been OK against non-finals teams, but I think we're better off with another ground level player given Tippett will crash more packs and bring the ball to ground - even that is Parker spending more time forward, or K.Jack (as in the Geelong game).

This is a bit of a mystery. It was reported on 19 May that Talia (and Robinson) had been placed on LTI list, and that Marsh had been elevated to the senior list. At the time Harley was quoted as saying the Swans were confident that Talia would be ready to play after 8 weeks (the minimum time required once on LTI list). That would have taken Talia up to 14 July.

I recall that near the end of that period Talia was being listed as being 2-3 weeks away from returning. Then Talia's 'unfortunate incident' was reported on 18 July, the Swans suspended him, and he went back to being listed as 'indefinite' on the LTI list.

I've just checked today's AFL injury list by club and Talia is not mentioned at all (while Robinson is being listed as 2-3 weeks away from return).

However the new report re Talia on the LTI list and Marsh elevated seems to suggest that the Swans have reported Talia to the AFL as still being injured and Marsh still being elevated (perhaps too late for Talia to be on the published list?). Whether that means Talia returned to training this week and proved to be still unfit, or perhaps got re-injured - or perhaps it is a matter of convenience for the Swans?

I think with Talia and Robinson it's just a pragmatic decision where they've decided Marsh and Foote are more likely to be required, and given they've got existing injuries (ie. haven't returned yet) we can get away with saying they are 'still injured'.

Otherwise we'd have Talia and Robinson eligible but we aren't going to need them, but have Marsh and Foote stuck on the Rookie List. Even so we're not likely to need any of them, but better to keep our options open.

Maybe they had to take Talia of the LTIL when they suspended him and now he goes back? That's a wild stab in the dark

Basically it seems they've told Talia and Robinson to get right for next season, and brought in more required players for genuine depth. Clever planning with the 'big dance' fast approaching.;)

I grew up there, and all thru high school I got up at 5:30 AM to do a paper round. Early in the week was OK because the Mercury had less pages and so my paper bag weighed less, and I could do the round running, and would stay warm that way. Saturday, when the paper had two sections, wasn't a lot of fun in winter I tell ya.

Wrong, just wrong. I think Horse should have really given Teddy a chance to re-invent himself as a large-bodied midfielder, as they are all the rage ATM, for the last few games of the season. His hands are good and is definitely a better field kick than a number of our midfielders and he can also drift forward for a few goals. A missed opportunity that could cost us the four points this week. :-(

Not much of a choice, really. Teddy was suspended in NEAFL for a week.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed elsewhere but I thought it was interesting on how the Swans game plan has changed. Between rounds 1-18 we were 2nd for long kicks into forward 50, now between rounds 19-21 we are 18th. For short kicks into Forward 50 we were 15th now we are first. For average marks we were 17th,now we are 6th and for goals per 50m entry as a percentage, we were 13th and now we are 2nd. This happened after the Hawthorn game, I am wondering if they decided to change their game plan so they can upset others in the finals, particularly Hawthorn? Maybe this decision was made long ago and only implemented from round 19 onwards? Just wondering what others think?

It is quite a remarkable change in a short period of time.

I think they definitely tried to do something different for the Geelong game. It had been well publicised ahead of that game that the lower ranked teams who had beaten the Cats had done so by targeting short passes into their forward line, with an observation at how good the experienced Cats defence is at picking off the long ball forward. That game was clearly a success for the Swans, with Buddy kicking just the one but multiple other players chipping in with plenty of goals. And lo and behold, the team seems to have realised it's a game plan that can be effective against other clubs too, rather than just the blind hack forward.

The best teams can alter their style depending on what is working, how the opposition structures up, and the ground/weather conditions. I imagine we will see the long-bomb forward method re-emerge at some stage (especially against teams who put more pressure on the midfield) but it is certainly reassuring to see that the team can execute the skills to play other ways. The team seems to have realised that it has forward options apart from Buddy (and Tippett), who are better leading up towards the kicker rather than having a ball kicked on top of them.

What's really remarkable is how far ahead of the coaching staff we are on RWO. We've all been saying that we should stop bombing it into Buddy for a long. They're finally listening to us.

...

I heard those stats on one of the AFL podcasts this week, I think it was The Roar or the Superfooty podcast. We often hear how it is difficult for teams to change tactics and style mid way through a season so it is very impressive that the boys have been able to change the game plan "on-the-run" so to speak.

Probs.

I'm hoping that Naismith is able to climb a few more rungs and keep Sinclair at bay.
Not because I don't like Sinclair, but i see Naismith as having been more valuable, but worry that Sinclair is more of an automatic 'in' when fit.

I doubt that will continue - certainly we've tried hitting shorter targets I50 recently, but that 3-week sample also reflects 90, 67 and 70 point wins against bottom-10 teams.

We've run riot in those 3 games, and with the exception of the first half against St Kilda, with virtually no opposition pressure. So I think as Liz alludes to, it is a dramatically different story when we are against the pressure of quality opposition, particularly in finals. When under immense pressure you're obviously going to be more likely to kick long and not find those shorter targets as easily.

We're just not good enough by foot to try and slice up quality teams like Hawthorn have done. Nevertheless I think we are far less one-dimensional up forward given the current personnel there, which is important for the finals.

I think bombing in long against Hawthorn has been our downfall, with Gibson, Frawley and co sitting back there waiting. Often buddy facing a 2 or 3 on one scenario. What makes it interesting in my opinion is we starting doing this after the Hawks game. Next time we face them it will be very interesting. They will not be use to our different style of play and how will they adjust???

My main concern would be that if we try and hit all these shorter targets against the pressure of a Hawthorn, we'll turn the ball over repeatedly and they will tear us up the other way.

I don't know the exact stats, but we are still right down the bottom (ie. worst) in terms of turnovers - it's just that our defence has been so good, we've won so much contested ball through the middle, and our forward line (when functioning) is dangerous, that our lack of polish by foot and resulting turnovers haven't hurt us as much.

But that has been playing a certain, fairly conservative way - I think that changes if we try and get too fancy trying to pick off short targets all the time once we're up against decent teams.

It needs to be a balance, but Hawthorn are actually vulnerable against tall forward lines so long as you can get the ball in there quickly enough, and have forwards who can take contested marks. It's only when you give them time to get numbers back and/or zone off by moving the ball too slowly that they are dangerous in that regard.
