Having dinner with a recent AFL convert who just questioned the 15m penalty. When did this last get used? (did it even exist?)

Yes. It was definitely in use as late as 1987... I don't know when it was replaced with the 50m penalty.

Most famous (infamous) 15m penalty ever against Jim Stynes.

Changed to 50m from 15m in 1988. I think there still should be both at umpire's discretion.

I wonder if the Stynes penalty was the last 15m penalty ever, then? It would depend on whether there any in the Grand Final.

Watching old games, 15m Penaltys where handed out a lot more than 50m, any holding on etc was nabbed. I doubt a 15m penalty would be usefull for a player these days as it would slow them down when now they just give it off to the running player.
