A little bit of a history lesson.

1999 Rising Star winner.
2001-2.5 Eade played him all over the place then Roos took over and put him in the ruck and on the ball. Result second half of the season was a pearler.
2003 - Brownlow
2004 - Injured knee for most of the season but didn't miss a game
2005 - another top season, didn't win a Brownlow but we did win a flag that year if you recall, and was instrumental in a big way.
2006 - Brownlow, got bloused by a point in the GF and who can forget the running goal from the centre bounce at the start of the last quarter
2007 - yep, bad season put down entirely to female problems and IIRC Bazza was in the same boat (not the love boat that's for sure)
2008 - injured again.

I don't need a history lesson. The point stands - two outstanding seasons.
He was good in '99 when Stafford went down.
Strangely enough, I do recall that we won the flag in '05 but you've significantly overrated Goodes' year. Played one absolute blinder against the Crows over there but otherwise, his form was very patchy.

My criticism of him is that he has only had two outstanding seasons throughout his career. His best is as good as anyone's but I reckon other superstars have delivered more often.

Goodesy's best is yet to come.

Indeed there is another Brownlow in him as a mid and a real chance as a permanent forward. Nightmares for defenders with a fit and strong Goodes being hit lace out with the silver service from the classy midfield of 2010 of Vespa, Bird, the Bee Gee, Bulldog, Hanno and Bevo. Worth sticking around for.

Besides, if he hadn't of been so inconsistant and gone missing so often, perhaps he would have more than two to his name. Again, lost opportunities....

How many dual brownlow medalists (or single brownlow medalists for that matter) have every year as a "stellar" year. Not very many.

Give the guy a break. IMO he was "chucking a Crouchy" in that he wanted to see how many games he could play without a break - whilst at the same time playing injured and not telling anyone. Suspension gave him that break. Obviously, you can't play the game forever and when you stop, all sorts of problems (that you have been ignoring) present themselves.

I'd bet that if Goodesy went up for a trade instead of duck butt, there would have been an open auction to see which team would pay the most to have him.

Goodesy's best is yet to come.

Gee people are tough on this guy. 2 seasons now in his career he has had debilitating injuries and still people expect him to be a superstar every week while playing with those injuries.

Interesting isn't it that when he plays with debilitating injuries that would keep a lesser man (Christiano Renaldo for example) off the paddock and he is criticised for inconsistency. The only player i have seen that exceeds his skills (velvet with ruffles on the collar rather than just silky) and could ignite a match with run, hand and foot was the great Skilton (as a toddler of course). Why don't we appreciate fully that he is a great champion? Gave him a nine for his guts in getting on the paddock (one point) and turning critical games with sheer brilliance (one point) and the aesthetic of his play (one point). Thereby turning a 6 for a lesser mortal into a nine. He is the genuine aniline leather upholstery in our Cortina, he is a Boerl & Kroff on a shelf of Asti Spumante etc., etc.

Its why the Captaincy has eluded him to date.

In fairness to the posters (myself included) that marked him down, they all did so whilst offering up excuses for his lack lustre performance. Whether it be injuries or just his head space, the fact of the matter is, he was pretty ordinary this year. He probably does get marked harder than most but when you're capable of playing the sort of footy that we all know he can, well it's bound to happen.

Undoubtedley the guy has the talent, ability, aerobic capacity and physical shape to be one of the best footballer that there has ever been. But until he can start turning in something like those performances on a week in, week out basis, he is destined to go down as yet another could of been instead of taking his rightful spot next to the all time greats of AFL.

6 from me, unfortunately.

The beginning of the year something was messing with his head, and he let it. And that is why he got 6, when I would have loved to give him 8 for his heroics at the end of the year. But Goodsey, OUR Goodsey, got himself suspended, as well as nearly suspended, and he was way out of line. Not good enough for a player who is that good. Love the bloke, but..... So 2009 should be a winner. Love watching him on the move, and when he is sublime, well he is sublime. Too easily distracted by dramas off the court.
