What's with the Grundy hate?

Plugger I went to a training session and his kicking was shocking, while everyone else was training he was practicing his kicking it was terrible.
Enough said couldnt believe how bad it was. Played a game three days latter and missed a goal from 25 and missed by a long way.

Forget watching a training session. Did you see him yesterday? Third good game in a row. He has beaten three opponents comprehensively and won plenty of the footy himself. He has arrived.

Played much better this week. He's always been a good mark (the one-hander was impressive!), but yesterday his decision making improved.

I didn't notice him much at the ground - fact he looks similar to Marty Mattner doesn't help. But watching the replay last night, the thing that impressed me particularly was how clean he was off the ground. Even when he played some good footy earlier in the season, he was very fumbly when the ball hit the deck. But yesterday he was picking the ball up clean as a whistle.

Reg was very good yesterday. Got to the contest on time, nice clean hands, no fumbling and good decisions.
His one handed mark on the half-pirouette was lovely.

From the distance of a television (which isn't a great way to judge anyone, but an especially poor way to judge forwards and backs) he looked more comfortable than I've seen him look... ever. While his opposition might have been pretty moderate, the game was played at a cracking pace and he seemed to keep up well. He was a strong cog in our running game, rather than looking like a slow dude trying to play a quick man's game as he has in the past.

I think the adage the match committee chose is that he gets to stay in the backline as he has been making less horrendous stuff-ups than Teddy Richards has of late. So Teddy got moved & Reg stayed.

I still feel Reg is best used off half forward/forward pocket as a crumbing & leading second forward in the Craig O'Brien mould. But if he is getting confidence in defence then let's keep him there. It is not like we have lots of reserve down back, does it?

And he's got a special relationship with the southwestern corner of the square. He took two more beauties that way today to go with the mark-of-the-year contender vs Port.

You're clearly not watching him. He has beaten Cloke and Walker comprehensively over the last two weeks. I'd say he's one of the better kicks we've got, yes he's turned it over a little bit under pressure but his kicking is pretty sound.

Probably being played out of position and doing a pretty good job at the moment.

surely not, my memory of Schaubs is that of a great defender with a lovely kick.

Schaubs was an inconsistent kick, not awful but certainly prone to a clanger or two every now and then. I think a fair comparison would be LRT's kicking this year (which is greatly improved, generally hits a target but every now and then is pretty awful), however Schaubs was light years ahead of LRT in his decision making and read of the game so he generally took better options.

Schaubs did give out beautiful, sweeping "as good as a kick" handballs.

Surely he's in the mould of so many of our mid/large-ish-sized previous defenders and their ball use:

Leo Barry
Andrew Dunkley
Andrew Schauble
Jayson Daniels
Troy Luff

All had good/great hands and questionable disposal. All held their place in defence. The difference is Grundy has time to improve

Exactly, it's a great R&W tradition that Reg, Ted and LRT are taking to new heights/depths.

Every chance Reg might get to show his wares up forward. There's a two week opporunity there, possibly more!

Poor disposal when there was time for think music always looks pretty bad down back - just ask Teddy!

You can see them just about to do the instinctive things, then they take time to size up and BOOM - something disastrous happens. In the forward line, there is a whole ground to help mask the errors, but down back, there's nowhere to hide!

Tough position, not sure who else to put back there, which is the main problem.
