"[T]here are things that matter more and he's reading and thinking about them: heaven, reincarnation. Life and death are the only things that are truly a matter of life and death. Not football."
Amazing. That was like a lowlights reel, highlighting all the flaws in the Sydney side in just one game. The worst thing is, they've been blatantly obvious for a while. For instance:
Bevan: If his skills don't let him down, his decisions do. Why would you EVER pass to Mathews in an overhead marking contest, let alone in defence? And what the hell is he doing getting 9 marks from 11 possessions. That is the sign of a go-to person out of defence, and somebody with such poor skills should never be used in that role.
Everitt: So having punched the ball through when he didn't need to, in this game he goes for a mark when he should punch, costing us a goal (as opposed to a point which proved to be the difference in the other game). So next time he goes for the punch...straight to an opponent. Please, never let him near the defensive goal line. In fact, don't put him on the field at all.
Selections: Okay, so you want to keep Dempster in for team balance? Great. He shouldn't have been dropped in round 17 anyway. But why would you leave out one of our few attacking midfielders, Buchanan, when you have so many defensive ones ? Bevan, McVeigh, Crouch, Mathews, Kirk, Bolton... Without Kennelly, we need all the flair and run we can get, and leaving Buchanan out was foolish.
McVeigh: Did stuff all yet again. Maybe three good games this season ? just not enough.
Barry: You're not 25. Trying to create out of defence is a nice idea, especially with Kennelly not around, but you just can't run away from any opponent under 100kg any more.
Key defenders: Yet again we were carved up by bigger, stronger opponents. I could understand that happening with LRT out, but that's exactly what he's there for ? to provide some bulk in the backline. Admittedly, it doesn't help when there is so many opportunities created for them, which is what having so many defensive midfielders is supposed to prevent.
Davis: Had some great games this year, but also has the tendency to go missing. Why not move him into the middle?
Umpires: Not Sydney's fault per se, but a constant factor against us.
