CAMPBELLTOWN KANGAROOS JASON TURNER HONOURED WITH THE SYDNEY AFL?S HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL AWARD

Brilliant Kangaroos midfielder Jason Turner last night won the Phelan medal for the best and fairest player in the Sydney AFL.

Turner, aged 20, polled 15 votes to win by a single vote from former Campbelltown, now North Shore on-baller Simon Webb, in front of 500 guests at the Dockside Centre, Darling Harbour.

It was a huge night for the Sydney AFL with the League celebrating the Centenary of Australian Football in Sydney. The night included ten former Sydney AFL players becoming the inaugural inductees into the Sydney AFL Players Hall of Fame, and four retrospective Phelan medals presented.

Turner trailed by 2 votes going into the final round but polled best on ground (3 votes) in the Rd18 match against Western Suburbs to secure the medal. Webb finished second with 14 votes while St George duo Aaron Langsworth and Todd Featherstone finished equal third on 13th. Langsworth was ineligible due to suspension.

Turner, who wears the No.10 guernsey for the Kangaroos, had a wonderful start to the season and was an integral part of the Campbelltown?s team which won the Vili?s Pre-season Cup defeating AFL Canberra club Queanbeyan. A goal kicking on-baller who loves to play up forward, Turner is a strong, powerful and pacey player who opposition teams find hard to match up on.

Originally from Bathurst, Turner was a member of the NSW/ACT RAMS Talented Player program. He represented NSW/ACT in the AFL National U16 Championships in 1999 and again represented NSW/ACT at the National AFL U18 Championships in 2001. Last year he tried his luck in South Australia, playing seven reserves games and twelve U19 games for South Adelaide in the SANFL.

NATIONAL SYDNEY AFL RISING STAR AWARD

The other prestigious award in the Sydney AFL is the National Australia Bank Sydney AFL Rising Star award, which this year went to Nick Potter from Pennant Hills. Sydney Swans Assistant coach Peter Jonas presented Nick with his award.

Potter, 18, was the unanimous choice by the judging panel. He won the NSW/ACT RAMS Best and fairest this year, captained the NSW/ACT U18 team which won division II at the AFL National Championships and was named in the All Australian team.

The criteria was that the player must be in their first two years of senior football anywhere in Australia (including SANFL, VFL, WAFL etc). Finals were not included. Sydney AFL clubs were asked to nominate an eligible player if their performances warranted it.

In the club awards North Shore won the Sydney AFL McConnell Club Championship award with 216pts. St George was second with 138 points.

    Other winners were:

Sydney AFL Reserve Best and Fairest Sanders medal - Paul Rowles (North Shore)
Sydney AFL U18 Best and Fairest - Kealey medal ? Kieran Jack (Sydney Redbacks)
SFA Snow medal ? Andrew Bawden (Southern Sharks)
SFA Reserves McFarlane medal ? Michael Lewis (Wollongong)
SFA Division II Armstrong medal ? Frank Piccolo (Pennant Hills) and Jaideep Bedi (UNSW-ES)
McConnell Club Championship award - SFA: Sydney Uni
McConnell Club Championship award ? Sydney AFL: North Shore

Does anyone know if full counts will be posted anywhere? I'm particularly interested in seeing the U18 counts in as much detail as is available.
