A highlight of the game on Sunday was an esteemed member of RWO over the fence in a verbal stoush with Matt Maguire. Not sure what was said, but it was just after Maguire was outmarked by topup #60. It's not often a player responds but Maguire got so involved in conversation he was barely interested in standing the mark.

Come on ORB, what did you say to upset him so much???

Perhaps a reminder of his soft effort in the 05 PF?

I'm sorry Prim but I don't agree. If a player has spent an extensive period out or has had a limited preparation then they need to get match fitness in the Twos. The reason for this is simple, at the lower level the player is putting less stress on their body and can work themselves back to match fitness the longer a game goes on. Black was not starring in the first but by the last he was firing. If he came directly into the Seniors there is a chance at the high stress level of AFL footy he could re-injure himself or at least strain something else. His body may not be ready for AFL footy either and then he becomes a burden on the team who will be carrying him.

    Match Report

The Lions were the favourites coming into this game, in great form after pounding the Suns reserves twice in the past 3 rounds. With the added size and experience of Simon Black, Matt Maguire, Andrew Raines and Brent Staker, they seemed to have the edge on our relatively inexperienced team. On the balance of play and possession, the Lions probably deserved the victory but it was disappointing that the our boys lost the grip on the match after putting up such a competitive effort for the first 3 quarters.

Brisbane were clearly the dominant team in the first quarter; their forward press was effective enough to lock the ball down in our defensive half for long periods as we struggled to get the Sherrin into our forward areas. However, due to some desperate Swans defence (rushing a few behinds) and some poor kicking they could only muster one goal, which proved costly as the Swans were more efficient with our forward 50 entries, mainly thanks to young topup Lloyd Perris who was involved in both goals, kicking one and setting up Daniel Robinson for the other.

    Quarter time
    Swans 2.2 (14)
    Lions 1.5 (11)

The 2nd quarter was a more even contest - the Swans skipped away to a 15 point lead after goals by Mitch Morton, Brandon Jack and a massive 65m Andrejs Everitt special but the Lions hit back through Andrew Raines and Jordan Lisle after turnovers by the Swans defenders. Morton increased our lead, snapping a trademark opportunistic goal from 10m out, which only served to spark the Lions into action. Brisbane wrestled the lead back with 2 quick goals - a spectacular mark and goal by Richard Newell and an easy set shot by Patrick Karnezis after an egregrious overuse of the handball through the corridor led to yet another turnover. Dean Towers restored the Swans' lead when Brent Staker fell into his back, who further compounded his error by giving away a 50m penalty for umpire abuse/backchat, allowing the former North Ballarat star to kick truly from 20m.

    Half time
    Swans 7.6 (48)
    Lions 6.8 (44)

Raines was taken off by the Lions at half time to act as the senior emergency, which was a big bonus for us as he had accumulated plenty of possessions playing as an onballer opposed to Everitt. Morton, perhaps with knowledge of his own imminent withdrawal at three quarter time, booted the Swans' next 3 goals - all from different sources. The first was when he recovered quicker than Ryan Harwood after dropping a tough marking chance, gathering the loose ball and running to the goal square. The second was when he led hard to the 50m arc to collect a Jack pass despite close attention from Hawrood and the last was a great rundown from behind on Lions defender Jordan Bourke (can be seen on the SwansTV highlights). The Lions had managed a solitary goal in between Morton's three, Lisle getting an easy mark inside 50 to nail his first goal after Jesse White had misjudged his attempt at a punch. Towers and Lisle again traded goals to give the Swans a handy 14 point advantage heading into the last term.

    3 Quarter time
    Swans 11.7 (73)
    Lions 8.11 (59)

Morton was withdrawn for emergency duty, and with promising tall topup Thomas Head not sighted since the first half (I'm guessing due to injury), Crouch swung Tommy Walsh from fullback, where he had been excelling against the potent Lisle, to full forward to partner the subdued Tim Membrey as our forward targets. The tough task of marking the Lions' leading goalkicker fell to Xavier Richards who had been having a solid game playing on the likes of Niall McKeever and Staker.

Their ruckman Sam Michael, who had probably been second best to White for most of the day, started winning crucial hitouts allowing the Lions to put pressure on our defenders with multiple 50 entries. Due to some poor team defending, easy goals to topup Dylan Bresnehan and that man Newell again with his 3rd allowed the Lions to draw within a kick and when Lisle outmuscled his new marker Richards to kick his 3rd the Lions had erased the Swans' slender advantage in a matter of minutes. Richards struggled to the bench with cramp, sounding a SOS signal to Walsh who answered the call to resume his battle with Lisle at fullback.

White and Towers wasted gettable chances and kicked a point each, but when Alex Brown failed to beat a Lions tackler in a bid to open up the play, it allowed topup Daniel Daye to further extend the Lions' lead with a simple goal under no pressure. Matthew Dick and then later Towers were used as the spare man in defence in a vain bid to stem the flow as Karnezis widened the margin with 2 more goals, the second a fortuitous result after a wild throw-in in our defensive 50 flew over both ruckmen's head and straight into Karnezis' lap.

The Swans to their credit didn't keep up and kept attacking in a final bid to win the game but all they could manage were behinds to Towers, Shane Biggs, White (an awkward looking left foot around the corner attempt from 10m out), Stephen Wray and an awful set shot from Membrey (with a Saad-esque runup) that went out on the full. The final nail was driven into our coffin when Biggs was completely bamboozled by a Newell kick that bounced and changed direction more unexpectedly than a Shane Warne wrong'un, allowing Lisle to set up Biggs' now unattended man Todd Banfield with a simple shot on goal.

    Full time
    Swans 11.15 (81)
    Lions 15.14 (104)

    • 1. Tim MEMBREY - His first goalless game of the season; most of his possessions were gathered outside the forward 50 and couldn't manage to hang onto the tough grabs against tough opponents in Maguire and Close.
    • 6. Tom MITCHELL - In Lamb's absence was the leading inside midfielder. Head-to-head with Black for most of the day, he had more of the ball than the former Brownlow medalist but couldn't quell Black's influence in the last quarter. He had plenty of clearances and touches, easily the most this season, and does his best work in close with his quick, direct and accurate hands.
    • 10. Mitch MORTON - Had an intriguing battle with Ryan Harwood, whose close checking prevented Morton from registering more than his 5 goals. Playing exclusively forward, didn't have many as touches as in recent reserves outings but had an excellent conversion rate from his possessions.
    • 13. Andrejs EVERITT - On review, probably had a better game than I gave him credit for on the day. Started plenty of the centre square bounces but allowed the freedom to roam up and down the ground. Effective in the centre clearances, his big frame allowing him to get first hands on the loose ball and drive the ball forward with his long kicking.
    • 17. Tommy WALSH - Did as a good a job that could be expected on Lisle and it could be argued his move away from the back six in the last quarter unsettled the previously solid unit and contributed to our demise. Was just as impressed with his ball use today, an area I've highlighted as a concern in his previous games in defence.
    • 18. Jesse WHITE - Another big game from White, but this time had a lot more possessions around the ground to go along with his usual 40+ hitouts. In the early stages of the game, tended to sit a kick behind play to help protect the space near the 50m arc. He pushed forward more when the Swans were attempting to peg back the lead but unfortunately kicked 3 behinds for his hard work.
    • 22. Dean TOWERS - Not sure where he was playing early on, even tweeted that he wasn't playing as I didn't spot him in the first 10 minutes. He eventually took up position as a pseudo CHF, a position he was surprisingly effective in, with his pace on the lead giving him every chance of marking the ball, which was backed up with his strong hands.
    • 23. Jordan LOCKYER - More responsibility on his young shoulders playing in defence instead of the wingman role. Solid without being spectacular, competed well in the marking contests.
    • 27. Daniel ROBINSON - Continues to impress with his performances in the midfield, not looking out of place against more highly credentialled opponents. A very effective tackler and extractor of the contested ball with his hands.
    • 28. Matthew DICK - Sometimes assigned to one of the many Brisbane talls and sometimes as the sweeper across halfback. His most involved game so far, a solid spoiler of the ball but may need to work on his kicking and decision making.
    • 31. Harrison MARSH - Part of the inside midfield rotation, his quick hands were key in releasing Everitt for his long goal, but in general struggled with the relentless pressure of the Brisbane midfield. Spent a short time tagging Black.
    • 33. Brandon JACK - Only 1 goal this week, but is always involved when the Swans are attacking and does end up setting up a lot of scoring attempts for his teammates. Not sure who he was playing on.
    • 36. Alex BROWN - Started forward in a direct swap for Walsh and played there for a quarter and a bit before switching into defence. He can be quite creative with ball in hand, and his awkward size and speed can prove to be a hard match up for opposing teams. Appeared a little flustered when the Lions were on top in the last and the ball being driven into our defensive 50 repeatedly, made some poor decisions both with and without the ball which cost us goals.
    • 42. Xavier RICHARDS - Not many touches but when he does have the ball, he looks incredibly energetic and exciting bounding down the ground. Very impressive in some one-on-one duels with McKeever, including a purple patch during the 2nd quarter in which he left the Irishman floundering on the ground after winning the ball off him.
    • 44. Jake LLOYD - Playing in an outside running role, worked extremely hard in the hot conditions, and would have accumulated plenty of touches across the day. Smart player with good skills and awareness.
    • 46. Shane BIGGS - From my perspective, his best game of the season. Performed his defensive duties well but was very prominent in the rebound 50s, was the recipient of many handball receives in particular from the topups.

Topups - Lloyd Perris played with the assuredness and calmness of a more experienced player. He took a smart grab coming in from the side to mark in front of Jesse O'Brien to register the Swans' opening goal and then delivered a clever pass to Robinson in the forward 50, after taking the time to assess the situation rather than blaze away. (can also be seen on the highlights video). Jordan Weir again used in defence and did well including a period where he was isolated at FB against the dangerous Karnezis. Mitch Crawford also used mainly in the back half while Stephen Wray and Harrison Green found some of the ball playing as running midfielders. Tall forward Thomas Head who had 4 goals in his last reserves game again started the game well, had the first shot at goal for us, but was not sighted after the first quarter.

Next game is against UWS Giants on Sunday 12th May 9.30am at Blacktown International Sportspark.
