An interesting discussion with Terry Wallace on SEN this afternoon.
He was talking about Frawley leaving Melbourne due to free agency and what compensation they would be due. The comment was made that if Malceski went to Melbourne then the Dees may lose any compo as they may be deemed to have come out even a la Carlton last year losing Betts but gaining Thomas.
There is a way around this. If they actually trade for Malceski then they would get a compensation pick for Frawley, which would probably be the pick immediately after their first pick. This would mean they would provably have picks 2 and 3, or 3 and 4.
Now, if the swans don't trade Malceski and lose him to free agency then we would probably only get a 2nd round pick which means we get the next pick after our original 2nd round pick which at this stage would probably be around the 40 mark.
Here is the rub. If Melbourne don't want to risk losing their compensation pick for Frawley then they will have to trade for Malceski. They won't trade their picks 2-4 but they will probably trade their 2nd round pick which would be very early 20s.
If we lose Malceski for pick 20 then I would take that in a flash.
