I think those numbers are deceptive because they only measure top speed. I’d love to know who is quickest over 10 metres.

In 16 out of 17 games this year, the Sydney side played against opponents who were older and more experienced. Only in the Western Bulldogs game in round 4 were the Swans older and more experienced.

See Hawthorn. The Swans showed promise in patches this season but there is no sugar coating their reality: another bottom-four finish for a team that not long ago was vying for top honours. Season 2020 threw up more questions than answers for Sydney. What on earth are they going to do with Lance Franklin, who did not kick a ball this year but still has two seasons to run on that humungous contract? Why are the ruck stocks so thin, and what will the Swans do about it? Will somebody, anybody, help out Tom Papley in the forward line? Where is the emerging young talent? On the latter point, James Rowbottom and Tom McCartin showed glimpses of potential. But with the likes of Franklin, Josh Kennedy and Sam Reid not getting any younger (or fitter), the paucity of good-to-go youth is a major concern. The Swans will point to injuries as a key factor in their humdrum showing this season, but that paints only part of the picture. Until they address the potholes in their list, Sydney will not be contending for the finals anytime soon.

I think the Guardian is right about Buddy’s contract, which I believe is a major reason why we have holes on our list.
Ditto the ruck hole
Ditto the tall fwd line holes

I’m more positive about our younger players than the Guardian.

And I’m encouraged too by the fact we were only 2 wins and %age from 11th. We lost 5 games by 10 points or less.

I'm not sure why Craig Little and Russell Jackson, no longer seem to write for the Guardian, but I prefer their work to that of Scott Heinrich.

I don't think we are similar to Hawthorn at all to be honest. On completely different trajectories....

It reads like someone that watched about 3 swans games all year....

Russell Jackson in particular was fantastic. Scott seems to be very hit and miss.

I do enjoy the below the line comment crew there though - most are friendly irrespective of who they support.

Ha! I have noticed your participation BTL in The Guardian. I do agree with you, there are some very civil, intelligent and perceptive comments BTL of The Guardian AFL articles.

Very, very different to many online AFL blogs (such as The Roar).
