Thread: Chatting about Chad

Everyone knows what a big Chad fan I am.

One thing that I think he needs to work on is his positional versatility.

At the moment his great strength is playing as in inside midfielder and using his toughness, speed, power, anticipation and great skills to win in both attack and defence.

One thing he hadn’t strongly demonstrated is as ability to play a different position to inside mid.

Heeney can play inside mid, wing, forward and spare man in defence.

Mills can play inside mid and half back.

Parker can play inside mid and forward.

J-Mac can play inside mid, wing and half back.

If you can’t play multiple positions you may find yourself in Kennedy’s current position.

I don’t want Chad to become less prominent latter in his career if he suffers injuries and loses a little of that power and line breaking ability.

What other position to people think Chad should specialise in to increase his versatility?

None. Leave him in the guts and give him license to create havoc. It's where he'll do the most damage.

I agree. He's miles of ahead of most inside mids at his age. He reminds me a bit of Luke Shuey. He can win the ball at pace, drive toward the forward line, breaking tackles if necessary, and kick a goal. It's a rare talent at his age. He should team up well with Mills for a long time and improve as they play together.

Chad still has plenty to learn, especially the defensive side of his game. I would work on that first. He's very competitive, so I'm sure he's doing that already.

I think Banga's suggestion will come about anyway, because with the number of midfielders we have that can rotate at stoppages, Chad will have to play other positions at various times in a game.

Why is no one mentioning the number one aspect of his game that needs improvement, his hairstyle?

I can't stand his hair. He looks too much like Dermott for my liking

I know, it looks like somebody has cut a patch out of an old sheepskin run and pasted it to his head.

And if he is successful as Dermie - let it flow, let it flow!

Why are we questioning Chad. He is developing into a gun midfielder. He is Chad Warner, not JMac or Parker or Papley. If the club wanted to develop other aspects of his game they would have started by now. Clearly they see him as a midfielder.

They only tried Kennedy at half back because he is in his last year. Hewett at half back last year was a fail. He is in the midfield at Carlton and firing.

    Lets not stuff Chad around.

Bit defensive? No one is 'questioning' Chad.....just his haircut.

Also, it is never a drawback to add other strings to your bow and he does need defensive work. Horse loves two way players.

Chad is way ahead of the curve for his age and games played, and his improvement again this year suggests he’s got a lot more upside, as well as a highly professional approach given he spent all of pre-Xmas training with one or two others alone back in WA. We’ve every reason to be excited about him, but I’d tend to leave him in the guts for now.

I think where his improvement will come is

    - Gut running, and by that I mean long hard running a Heeney, or watching other sides, a Bailey Smith does. Chad’s improved his running a lot so identifying this isn’t a knock, it’s just the natural next step in his evolution
    - Defensive work. He’s a strong tackler and willing, and does a lot of pressure acts, so again, no knock. But his opponents can slip him at stoppages in particular, as we saw with Libba in that last big crucial play vs the Dogs. It’ll come.
    - First hands and breakaway. Not that he’s fumbly, he’s not. But often, he’s terrific at winning a ball that’s already bouncing around the chaos of a contest - which is a great trait in its own right. What’d you’d love to see him develop is that best-in league trait like a Pertracca or a Bont, of being the first player at the contest to lay hands on ball, seize it and then rip away using his power before anyone else has even had a sniff of it.

I think these will all hopefully come as his rate of development has been superb so far, and partly looping back to Bangalore’s question, he’s the sort of midfielder you can easily see kicking 25-30 goals a year - not so much from playing as a forward, just the strength of his midfield work.
'Delicious' is a fun word to say
