    Angry Hack of the week

Last week my Hack of the Week was a new player. Seems only fair that this week's Hack should be a (dearly) departed player.

Jason Saddington come on down (or rather don't, because you are Carlton scum).

Saddo arrived at our club in courtesy of the 1997 National AFL Draft. He was a 1st round selection, No. 11 overall and justifiably the club and its supporters had great hopes. Immediate impressions were of a tall (194cm) key position player who hadn't had a decent feed for a while (technical term is ?rangy?). Indeed, when he arrived, some people likened him to a toothbrush or thermometer. Every year we watched and waited for Jason to put on some weight, but every pre season he shaped up looking pretty much the same skinny kid who had a lot in common with a lamp post.

Saddo played his first game in round 1, 1998 and picked up a useful 15 disposals. Our hopes were high, especially when he received a Rising Star nomination. As the season progressed, some were talking about him as future captaincy material and 250 game player for the club.

However, unusually, Saddo's career peaked within the first three years of his career starting. To be exact, he had a career high 27 possessions in April 2000. Since then it has been an inexorable decline culminating in Saddo doing his knee in 2004. However, don't make the mistake of thinking this screwed up his career because it was definitely going down hill before that as can be seen below

    games disposals (ave)
    1998 23 12.0
    1999 22 16.0
    2000 21 16.0
    2001 23 12.5
    2002 22 14.1
    2003 14 11.6
    2004 10 12.4
    2005 7 9.1

For those who think that disposals are not an accurate reflection of a player?s worth, my memory is not exactly littered with wonderful memories of Saddo pulling down screamers, dashing down the wing, laying strong tackles or kicking swags of goals. He was only ever, even at his best, a good average player who could have been anything, but never was. He was not a goal kicker (41 in his career, ave 5 per year), not a greater stopper (they thankfully don?t keep stats on ?goals against?), never a great mark (career high 9 in a game, average 4.1 a game) and perhaps most shameful for a defender, averaged less than one tackle a game over his career. So a guy who looks a bit like a lamp-post, played a bit like one too.

Saddo ended up playing 142 games for the Swans over 8 years, and ultimately disappointed a lot of people. On the positive side, he provided RWO pundits plenty of entertainment as a favoured whipping boy. At the end of his time with Sydney, all we could get for him was a lousy pick 52. Maybe Carlton think he is a bit of a hack as well.

So congratulations to Saddo, Hack of the week.

P.S. - For those who wish to see this Hack in the Navy Blue, check this out...

    Hack in Navy Blue

Carlton think they have drafted a "a tall, mobile defender." Sorry blue boys, what you have recruited is a skinny 194cm hasbeen hack masquarading 'utility' (read bench warmer).

He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

It makes me feel ill seeing him in a Carlton guernsey, even though it seems to suit him. I liked Saddington but then I'm a softy and like any Swans player.
On one hand I would like to see him go really well for his sake but nearly my whole extended family barracks for Carlton, so I don't want him to help them win.

Without going into the merits or otherwise of Saddo as a player (and hey, I know that 'Hack of the Week' is scarcely meant to be a balanced look at the pros and cons) going back through the ugly history of the draft Saddo is a pretty good #11.

    The history is:
    1986* Michael Taylor
    1987* Tim McNeil
    1988* Mark O'Donoghue (to Sydney)
    1989* John Fidge (to Sydney)
    1990* Brad Sparks (to Sydney)
    1991* Brad Rowe
    1992 Jonathan Robran
1993 Brad Johnson (finally a winner!)
    1994 Damien Ryan
    1995 Don (yes, that's right, Don) Cockatoo-Collins
    1996 Brent Grgic
    1997 Our very own beloved
    1998 Lenny Hayes (okay, okay)
    1999 Darren Glass
    2000 Trent Sporn
    2001 Richard Cole
    2002 Jason Winderlich
    2003 Beau Waters
    2004 Adam Thomson.

You hit the jackpot occasionally (as in twice in 19 tries), but on the average you'd take a 149 game player every time ahead of a lucky dip from this lot.

    * The draft rules back in 1986-1991 are best described as surreal. I've tried to work out who was picked as the '11th top' player of those available by the clubs' recruiters (wading through a morass of specialty, novelty and incompetence selections that were meted out).

PS I actually like his haircut. Anyways, Carlton are in no position to be lecturing their players on the subject while Fevola remains on the list.

It's amazing how such a hack managed to fool the selectors 142 times?

Jon Robran was a good player at his peak.
    Johnson is bloody awesome still.
I think Dan CC was just as good as his brother, but lacked application. (That's my poor memory of him, anyway)
Grgic was good. Crippled by injuries.
    Hayes, hun.
    Glass, gun.
    Sporn was a Carlton pick-up...
Cole is a strange one. I think the theory is he's been misused by Malthouse, because he can definitely play football.
    Winderlich is too light.
Waters is going to be an awesome player.

All in all, I'd take Saddington before half of those.

Actually, I agree. I looked for the stats but could not find them. But Goodes was taken in the same year at number 50 odd, which just goes to show the draft is something of a lottery outside the top 10.

And, pre-1994 or so, inside the top 10 as well!

Firstly, I think that these LA posts are written tongue-in-cheek, which is French for 'not to be taken too seriously'.

Secondly, I tend to agree that poor old Saddo ended up being far less a player than we always expected. Sure he was a 'great servant of the club', but that just translates to 'but not a very good player really'. Personally I thought Rowan Warfe had a better career with us overall.

Good luck Saddo. The truth is you will easily be in the Blues best 22, and maybe the extra responsibility and opportunity will suit you well. And you wont find me booing you... ever.

Rohan Warfe, now there is food for thought...

Twice? I'd take Glass out of those lot.
