    Back to back

What will we need to improve on this season to win the flag again? Can we realisticially go back 2 back?

Eliminating those games when the whole forward line gets collective yips would be nice. But when on song, the Swans are about as efficient as teams come in converting forward 50 entries into goals.

For me the improvement needs to come in the midfield. Again, we have seen periods of matches when the midfield dominates at clearances and the team kicks 5 or 6 goals in a hurry. It is hard to do that for extended periods, but even a small increase in the amount of time they are able to do that will make the Swans a formidable outfit.

West Coast fans are keen on claiming that if they had Barry Hall playing for them, they'd cream the rest of the comp. Maybe that's true. But I reckon that if you inserted Chris Judd into the Swans' midfield you'd get a similar result.

We ain't got no Chris Judd, though, so it's going to have to come from a variety of players. Jude maintaining his first half form of 2005 for a whole season would go part of the way. I'm not suggesting he has many similarities to Judd but at his best he makes a huge difference to the midfield.

Of the others, Ablett is the one who I think can become more damaging. We've seen it in glimpses - nay, extended glimpses - but if he can have the defensive shackles lifted somewhat, I reckon he could become a very potent midfield weapon.

The other big improvement I'd love to see from our midfield is an increase in the goals they kick. We must have the lowest proportion of goals kicked by the midfield of any of the top teams. That is partly because we have a very potent, multi-pronged attack and the team is clearly drilled to look for Davis, Hall, Magic et al, but I still reckon the likes of Bolton, Ablett and Fosdike should all be aiming for 15-20 goals per season, as Kelly, Cresswell and Schwatta used to contribute at their peak.

I'd like to see him be a little less damaging.

Reduce the penalty count, especially inside the D 50.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
