    How does trading work?

If a player is out of contract e.g. Judd, why does the old club have a right to ask for players in exchange? Doesn't end of contract mean the old club has no hold on that player, who is now a free agent? Apparently it doesn't but I don't understand the mechanism.

There is no free agency in AFL, next time you get a chance grab a player and ask them if they like that
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

The alternative is Judd nominates for the draft where he has no control over where he ends up and West Coast get no compensation.

By trading, West Coast get something in return and Judd gets a destination he is happy with.

For a player to leave a club for another, they have 2 choices:
    a) ask to be traded,
    b) get delisted.

With a quality player, like Judd, the club will want compensation, for letting him go. So clubs will offer player(s) and/or draft pick(s).

If the Eagles do not agree to a fair trade, by the Trade Date, Judd can go into the Pre Season Draft and try his luck, the highest draft pick will secure him first, and the Eagles get nothing in return.

Because AFL contracts run until after trade period (december?), so Judd is still signed to WC, but by next season he'll be out of contract with WC - but cant be traded as trade week is over, so he either signs with WC, or nominates for the draft.

A good example of this was Nick Stevens from Port. Wanted to go to collingwood, the clubs could not agree on a trade and Stevens then was free to go into the draft and ended up at Carlton.

Port wanted Didak if I remember but collingwood would not trade him for Stevens.

Carlton should try to get Judd in the pre-season draft. However I think wet toast will take anything if the alternative is nothing.

You take the number of spanners in a sidchrome tool set.

Divide it by the last game's starting 22 average shoe size.

Then multiple by the average score of the teams leading goal kicker.

Based on the number you get, the coaches are then ranked from top to bottom, one through sixteen.

Using the McIntyre system (Top plays bottom), the coaches play off in a best of three rock, paper and scissors.

The losers are relegated to a warm beer and cold pie relay race, the last man standing without vomiting gets first pick of the bottom eight.

The winners are sent on a three day survival trip where they are forced to listen to Eddie Maguire calling a Collingwood game on a constant loop. Last coach standing with full mental function takes the prized first draft pick.

Unless of course the draftee is a second cousin or closer realtion to a club member who held the position of boot studder or higher. In that instance, their mum gets to choose.

Classic RP. I'm sure that's how it's really done.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

As BBB said, they don't have to first pick in the pre-season draft, Richmond do.

The Blues have first (and third) pick in the National Draft.
And the man who started it all, the Schneiderman . . . . .
