Western Sydney team to be delayed

Ok so I saw the headline flying accross the bottom of the TV screen on the 5.30am news this morning - but I didnt stick around to watch the entire bulletin - anyway, if reports are true, the AFL have decided to delay putting a new team into Western Sydney due to lack of interest!!! hmm perhaps Andy and the lads read RWO keen to see what happens now to the new facilities out at Blacktown!.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

Well Theo Dimwit, if you are reading this ... Tassie.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

    Hear, hear.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

How long did it take them to realise there would be little interest?

There won't be a Tassie team. At least, not until a Melbourne team agrees to go into exile. It's ridiculous that a national competition has nine teams from one city, but none of them look like falling at the moment. With a bit of luck the recession will drive one of them to the wall.

Tassie deserves a team, and would certainly send more than 19,000 people to a final, but it's not worth the AFL's effort.

Western Sydney has six or seven times the population of Tasmania, virtually no AFL facilities and little interest in the game. So, the league has to make that its focus. It's a marketing imperative, nothing to do with football. I know it's a crapulous way of looking at the game, but that's modern sport.

Anyway, it's good news they've put back the western Sydney timetable indefinitely. 2012 was way too early. 2017 might be a better bet.

The biggest implication of today's news on actual football is - someone gets a bye every week.

They'll have to restrict the family ticket though.

The message from this is that there will be no 18th team in the current economic environment.

There are some serious implications for all 16 existing clubs, but particularly the Melbourne ones and those already struggling financially:

    * Corporate sponsorship will be wound back. In Melbourne, all 9 clubs will be competing for a smaller pie.

    * Club memberships will fall off. Households will be looking to cut their spending and for many football memberships will be what goes (particularly if your club has no prospect of playing finals).

    * The next TV deal could be signifcantly less than the current one meaning less money for all clubs. All media companies are under pressure. A post-Packer 9 will not have the money to conduct a bidding war for AFL rights (they also just paid for the Olympics), so it points to 7 and 10 getting the rights again for a bargain price.

Some Melbourne clubs must be very nervous to see where this all ends up - Melbourne FC in particular. Football is not immune from economic downturns and while the AFL competition has socialist ideals, the AFL as a body is basically a commercial beast and will let a club die / relocate / merge if it ultimately leads to a healthier competition. We're more likely to see a return to 16 teams rather than an 18th team which is probably what the AFL wants.

Precisely what they tried to do to North Melbourne a couple of years ago. You're probably right about a likely return to 16 teams in the short-to-medium term.
