2011 B&F predictions, results and event recollections

Anyone game to predict the top 10 of this year's B&F? It is always a tad tricky as an outsider because the coaches rate on things different to spectators, and knowing how much tougher Goodsey's benchmark will be than every other player each season is always a challenge.

Bearing in mind that the voting system rewards players who have played the majority, if not all, games, here is my attempt.

1 Ted Richards - has barely put a foot wrong
2 Adam Goodes -even his quietish patch mid-season was at a level most players can only dream of
3 Rhyce Shaw - I know many fans wring their hands at his disposal sometimes, but his defensive roles for the first two thirds of the season were great, and his drive and energy was a major factor in the late season surge
4 Josh Kennedy - steady improvement on last seaon and will come home again with a wet sail after his finals performances. Might get marked a little harder than last year because the expectations would have been higher but could force his way into the top 3 again
5 Ryan O'Keefe - a work horse in the midfield and several match winning performances, both early and late in the season. Did have a few quiet games, and when he did, the Swans normally got beaten.
6 Nick Smith - Mr Dependable in the backline. Closed down some top quiality opponents and didn't often get truly beaten
7 Shane Mumford - Fantastic second half of the year. Could finish considerable higher if the coaches take account of his interrupted pre-season and sore knee for his "just OK" first half of the year. A few missed games will hurt.
8 Dan Hannebery - a slowish start to the year but was great once he got going. Definitely built on last year, and played well even when the rest of the midfield didn't.
9Jude Bolton - another more than solid season from the warhorse, with terrific games at the start of the year before slowing down a bit. His contributions in the forward line should be rewarded.
10 Benny McGlynn- some great midfield tagging roles in the last month sit alongside his forward line efforts for the first half of the season. Did have a quiet patch in June / July.

The bottom couple spots are pretty hard to pick. Mattner had a solid year. Macca played several excellent games and the coaches may well rate his quieter ones higher than I have. Reid's efforts to hold down CHF at his age were fantastic. Will the coaches judge him according to his age, or will they mark him so as to "keep a lid on it"?

No place in this year's top 10 for the reigning BS medallist. He missed too many games and, the Dogs game apart, struggling to rekindle his mojo when he did return. Hopefully an injury free pre-season will help him recapture his form for next year. Jack is one reason why the team can improve in 2012. We know he has the ability.

Unlike the AFL award, the Swans don't have to pick an outright "Rising Star" and they have awarded it jointly in some past seasons. I suspect they will do the same again and recognise both Reid and Johnson.

I am finding it hard to nominate anyone as "most improved" having awarded the big gong to Big Ted. If he gets pipped for the BS medal, I can see him getting "most improved" instead.

I can definitely see JPK going back to back for the PR medal for "best finals player". A solid performer in week 1 and a standout in week 2. Shaw is probably his main challenger.

    1. Adam Goodes - Always tough to tell how the coaches will rate Goodes, but he has been magnificent this year, and has played his role, even when his form was down. I can't see him being overlooked.
    2. Josh Kennedy - Brilliant year from JPK. Finished first in the AFL for contested possessions and clearances (though he'll probably be taken over in contested possessions by Priddis). Outstanding.
    3. Richards - Fantastic year at FB, and will deserve a top 3 place.
    4. ROK - His polling in the coaches' award is telling. He'll do very well.
    5. Shaw - Played his role all year, and did it very well. Game went to another level in the last third of the year.
    6. Bolton - Tremendous start to the year, followed by a solid finish. Was on track for the Skilton, faded, but will still do well.
    7. Smith - So, so, SOOOO important to our backline.
    8. Hanners - At one stage was our best midfielder (JPK a little quiet, Goodes playing forward, Hanners getting 30 touches every week). Started slowly and faded late, but plenty to be excited about, and will poll well enough.
    9. Mumford - Just played too many games while underdone to repeat last year's performance. Was still mighty when in full flight, and hugely important.
    10. Johnson - Might surprise some people, but I have AJ sneaking into our top 10. He never once looked like being dropped, he was tremendously consistent, never really got beaten, and did anything and everything the coaches asked of him. I can see it happening. He got beaten fewer times than Nick Smith, playing on a wider variety (though on average lower quality) of opposition.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

    1. Adam Goodes (must and I mean MUST win it this year, no @@@@ing around like in 2009, coaches must give him this one, brilliant year)
    2. Ted Richards (career year by a mile, has to be top 3 and could push Goodesy)
    3. Ryan O'Keefe (aside from small down spot in the middle of the season, outstanding 2011, should poll well in the Brownlow)
    4. Josh Kennedy (slowish start but really got going after midway through the year, should be a certainty for top 5)
    5. Rhyce Shaw (really good year, at first tagging and defending really well then setting up a lot of play towards the end of the year)
    6. Jude Bolton (would have been top 3 at round 12, fell away a bit towards the end but still played some good 'uns)
    7. Dan Hannebery (coaches love him for good reason, good follow up year to Rising Star year)
    8. Nick Smith (great year, hardly puts a foot wrong and a certainty for top 10 in my mind)
    9. Jarrad McVeigh (rated highly by the coaches, played really well when not playing in the middle, good year)
    10. Alex Johnson (see below)

Mattner would not be surprised to see in the top 10, had a very good year. McGlynn started brilliantly and finished the same but had a long stretch of poor games through the middle of the year that I think will stop him from reaching the top 10. Reid will get high votes in unexpected week I think due to taking on his role at such a young age. Mummy would be top 5 had he not missed games due to injuries and suspension and been not fully fit in others. Could push top 10 still though, he is that much of a beast. Bird I think would have been top 10 halfway through the year but trailed off a bit. Grundy will be thereabouts as well.

My smokey (someone who will finish higher than expected) is for Alex Johnson. Watch out for it. If they still mark players as they did during the Roos era, he will get many, many votes. Did his job outstandingly well all year. Missed 4 games, so that could hurt.

EDIT: damn you for getting in before me with my AJ prediction, BSA!

I reckon most of us believe AJ will make the top 10 with the way our voting system works

The TLM countdown ought to focus on who comes second and third.
    Very honourable mentions for Teddy , Mummy , Habib , ROK , JK , Macca & Jubba , but IMO , 1st place is a shoe-in.

    Goodes - in Brownlow contention
Richards - stepped up to another level this year. Should have been in the 40 man AA squad.
Bolton - would have been leading at the halfway mark
    ROK - rennaissance man
Kennedy - Clearance king, spruicked a bit on OTC.
Mumford - Missed a few, but was BOG on more than a few occasions. Wouldn't be suprised if he finished higher.
Shaw - more run and bounce this year than previous years
Smith - solid, part of the back 6 largely responsible for the Swans success this year.
Mattner - solid, part of the back 6 largely responsible for the Swans success this year.
Johnson - solid, part of the back 6 largely responsible for the Swans success this year.

Dont know about the big one - a toss up between Jude, Ted & Joshua P I'm never right with them but I reckon Joshua P will definately get Finals player.

I can predict on the night that Primmy will get lots of hugs from young men, we will all cry at some point, possibly drink too much, and I will try my best not to lose my shoes.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

Ah yes Wardy, I am dreaming of hugs.

    I forgot, PP: Adam.

And I agree with Al. Doggy is a major contender for Club Man, along with Shaw.
